What's the Sharpest and Dullest knives you've received out of the box

Sharpest knife in recent memory was probably my Liong Mah GSD v2.

Dullest was a Busse I got off the exchange; could barely cut butter. Factory wise nothing really stands out but I know there have been some ones I was disappointed in. My newest knife, a Kizer Drop Bear, fits that bill. It was sharp, mostly, but not like I'd hoped it would be.

I don't think I've ever got anything that was just straight up dull. Guess I've been lucky. 😅
 
The factory sharpest I ever got were Moras if you would believe it. Specifically my Kansbol. Still got a scar to prove it too.

The dullest was a sabre from Windlass, and that was after the sharpening service. Its an ongoing problem with makers of all price ranges aswell as the bad sharpening services offered by most retailers.
 
Almost every Cold Steel I’ve gotten has been unbelievably sharp. I have a Recon Tanto here that is so sticky sharp, it’s uncanny.

The worst has been a TOOR tanto. I sent it back for sharpening and after waiting 6 weeks, it came back STILL sucky
 
Sharpest was a cruwear Bradford 3 that I bought for my daugher. Damn thing was screaming sharp, i must of tapped the blade by the choil and didn’t know I was cut until my wife asked if I was ok.

Dullest was a Camillus made buck 303 that I bought at a yard sale. The guy selling it said his dad had dulled the blades with a file and let him and his brother play with it when they were kids. I could not believe he sold it but its in my daughters collection now.
 
Sharpest: Morakniv Companion. Scary sharp.
Dullest: Dalstrong Santoku. After a visit to my whetstones, it is now may favorite veggie knife. Slices tomatoes like a demon.
 
Sharpest, scary sharp, was my Cold Steel Code 4 tanto.

Dullest was either my ZT 0450, or Leatherman Juice, neither would cut paper, let alone shave hair, out the box.

In general, all my Spyderco's were quite sharp out the box, so were my Benchmade but not as refined an edge as the Spyderco's.
 
Sharpest - CRKT Spear Point Minimalist.
That thing was a laser out of the box, and to pay them respect, I always sharpen it at least to that level, if not even sharper. It came with better edge than many way more expensive knives.


Dullest - Boker Plus. Got 2 Bokers in the past, sold one, traded one and returned one. Got rid of all very fast. They both came so dull they wouldn't shave and would barely cut paper. Fit and finish was terrible, sheaths would either be loose or too tight and were all full of shavings. And even blades still had belt grinder dust on them.
Yeah, I know they were all cheap - but man, CRKT is cheap too, but it came clean and sheath is perfect. It was also scary sharp. Only fit and finish isn't perfect, but at that price point - I don't care.

I don't know because I sharpen every "new" knife before i use it. I don't understand people who assume that the knife maker sharpens the knife the way the knife buyer wants.
 
Queen has been leaving the sharpening to the buyer for years and that seems to be working fine for them 👍

Well… except Queen closed its doors around 2018, and is now a completely different operation made in China.
 
The sharpest soon became the dullest, so I sharpened it. Been repeating this for over 50 years.
 
I like queen and had no problem sharpening them, but for many users that bought a knife to use instantly that could have left a sour taste. True, there were other issue too.
 
Sharpness measurements (BESS scores in grams) on 191 blades using an Edge-On-Up PT50A.
The blades had previously cut nothing more than a piece of computer paper.
The column labeled Sharp is the average of 5 or more measurements.

The forum software will not let me post the entire list, so here are the sharpest twenty
and the dullest twenty.

Sharpest: Ontario rat 1 D2 It was sharp enough to cut hair vertically. (There were many knives that were that sharp, but for some reason this was the most impressive.) I guess it was because it was so cheap.)
Dullest: Cold steel custom 60sf Spectre I've never had such a dull knife out of the box.

Dullest: every busse I’ve ever tried
Sharpest: ironically the busse Elmax slicer 🤣 that things is a laser beam

I’ve also had extremely dull and sharp benchmades. All the spyderco, CRK and Shiro I’ve had have all come consistently sharp
