What's the Sharpest and Dullest knives you've received out of the box

Sharpest was my Shun Sora paring knife. There are legitimate concerns about getting cut from walking by where it's stored... :)

Dullest was my Kizer Begleiter, but at least it wasn't very expensive. It's still a good knife despite arriving with an edge on it that would only be approved for use by toddlers at daycare.

I routinely test new knives and sometimes knives at stores using an Edge-On-Up PT50A at 5 points spaced along the blade. Here are the BESS scores for a Benchmade McHenry Mini Infidel, double-edge D2:
Near tip _ Near heel
374 252 317 823 824
293 263 239 268 325

The knife as a whole is worse than average, especially for Benchmade, but those two 820+ measurements are the worst individual point results I have seen on more than 100 knives costing over $20. I repeated the tests near those two bad points and repeatedly got numbers worse than 820. The 823 and 824 are each the average of 3 measurements.

This was a knife at a store. I did not buy it. I suggested to the owner that he send it back to Benchmade for sharpening. I should check back and see if he did that.

I have an Emissary 3.5 Assisted 477-1 that tested at 229 (average of 15 measurements) out of the box, which is poor for Benchmade. I sent it back for sharpening, and it tested at 207. But Benchmade had left a burr on the edge. After stropping on plain leather for a minute or so, it improved to 166, which I consider pretty good.

Sharpest: Gough custom resolute and spyderco PM2 10v

Dullest: Liong Mah SDC V2 .

My sharpest was the Hogue Deka in Magnacut. Amazingly sharp for $130.
Dullest was Benchmade Bushcraft in CPM S30V.

Honorable mentions are Spyderco PM2 and Pena Cabalerro.

Sharpest - Rmj Unmei - It was scary
Dullest - Heretic Manticore X - second owner so possible 1st owner dulled it somehow but doubt it.

Sharpest - Microtech.
Dullest.

Anything made before 1970.
Even Buck knives back then were nothing to brag about.
It was pretty much an accepted fact that if you wanted a sharp edge, it was up to you to do it.

Sharpest would be between Rigid/Cold Steel (back inna day) out of the box would effortlessly shave hair. Dullest would have to be a Randall #1 bought off a guy @ Louisville show some years back. Edge appeared factory but was "display safety dull" sent it back to the "mothership" for sharpening along w/ the question why. No one at Randall had an explanation other than we generally don't let them leave like that but couldn't find any signs of "deliberately dulling". They sharpened it and returned it.

Sharpest: Victorinox
Dullest: Okapi. Literally butter knife dull. Every single one of them. I could rub my finger hard on the edge without fear of being cut. I've had spoons that were sharper...

For me:
Sharpest: Spyderco Military and/or CRK Large 21
Dullest: Emerson Commander

For my wife:
Sharpest: Spyderco Para 2
Dullest: CRK Large 21 ‘Tanked’

Sharpest? A wood carving knife made by Deepwoods Ventures. Screamin’ sharp.

Dullest would probably be a Case. I wish they wouldn’t even try to sharpen it and just let me do it.
