First of all as far as price is concerned they are a bargain. I make $9 an hour, support a family, and I own 8 Striders. A Marine buddy of mine owns three that all went to Iraq with him.

As far as cult following? All of the manufacturers have a cult following.

As far as not being innovative lately, and not introducing new designs. That's uninformed BS. In my opinion they are the most innovative company around today. Check out some of the models sold at the Vegas Classic.

The intelligent will not rip on something they have little or no experience with.

BTW I've not been able to destry my Becker either and it was only 50 bucks, typical strider pricing is like 350-500 depending on the model and I could get another Becker tomorrow for another 50bucks if I lost or broke mine (I can live with the performance diff for the priced diff)
And what performance difference would that be?

EK knives can't be compared to Randalls either.

I don't need a history lesson, if I carry a blade it'll be a real knife.

Yeah, people can carry old antique knives if they want. It's 2005 I like to use what is the best Now.
So, tell us why Eks can't be compared to Randalls?
So, what do you carry?

I carry a strider DB.
EKs suck. It's like this mutt, everyone has an opinion, just like everyone has an a&sh#le.

"EK knives can't be compared to Randalls either."

Try telling that to any of the soldiers who had to choose between the two during World War II.

"I don't need a history lesson,"

Knives are the oldest tool in the world (other than a pointy stick). We all need a history lesson. Every idea, technique, and technology that makes a great knife today has been influenced by a myriad of talented knife makers from the past.

"if I carry a blade it'll be a real knife."

How will you know what is a real knife without making an exhaustive and informed comparison?

"Yeah, people can carry old antique knives if they want. It's 2005 I like to use what is the best Now."

My Chris reeve Shadow 7" is 17 years old. When will it become an antique? Strangely, it's still regarded as an excellent blade.

djolney,
We always get these guys who pop in, think they know everything, post about two dozen posts and then get ignored...

Stick, rock on witcha bad self....

yeah, before this switches over to an ek/randall fight, i want to thank everyone for posting on this thread. i think it was a great discussion.

Looking for some feedback on the BUCK-STRIDER-TARANI 882 SBT . Also how does ATS-34 compare to S30V ??

Sometimes I really miss the Maddog guys. :)

Brand loyalty is cool, and I'm glad to see it, but this is just moronic.

If you're really good, perhaps someone will buy you a Strider sticker to stick on your hockey helmet. You'll be king of the short bus then:).

(No offense to the Strider people, they're good folks).

Are you saying the Ka-bar, Buck 110, and Endura are not real knives? Many soldiers find those knives to be real enough for their use. Plus you dont have to pay more, or wait longer just to get a real handle put on. Ek knives were made for war, in fact the government even allowed Ek to use rationed steel during the war(WWII) (correct me if I'm wrong).

Good question, I guess I just like the thought of a no questions asked warranty in the event I ever broke my knife and I like paracord handles, but Beckers are very solid and for the MONEY I don't think anything else compares. Notice I said for the MONEY so Strider and Busse guys don't start :)

When I first saw EK mentioned I thought you guys were talking about Emerson :D

You're right Watcher,
It's also the only American knife sanctioned to use the title "commando" by the British Ministry of Defence.

The US President had an Ek on his desk throughout World War II: which he supposedly used as a letter opener. Nice recognition of how respected John Ek was.

Now back to Striders: would someone please explain why paracord handles are nice? Can they be cleaned? What do they feel like when they are covered in blood or fat?

David

David,
The para cord handles are one of those things that seem to be either love or hate em. They were designed for security of grip not comfort per se. Although I found the grip on the para corded handle on the Strider I owned to be just fine for me, YMMV.

The paracord handles could be cleaned or just replaced. The instructions are on the Strider Website. I wouldn't want to replace them in a tense situation but I wouldn't mind doing it as part of after ops maintenance. The para cord handles work well covered in fat or blood.

BTW I am not a rabid supporter of the Strider guys but I do like their knives and they seem to be great guys as far as my dealings with them. I still own a GB folder which sees a whole lot of use, as I think it is the most heavy duty folder with the best warrantee (sp?) available right now.

I am actually suprised at the overall civility of this thread. There was a time that this kind of thread would have ignited a real flame war requiring popcorn and beverages for your viewing enjoyment. Although on other forums this thread would have seen a whole lot of fire works. :D

Regards,

Nick

Nick,

Thanks for the paracord info.

It's very nice to see that we are a generally civil bunch of edged tool enthusiasts.

David

Someone asked about the SBT - Mine was kinda disappointing, especially at the price I paid, though the G10 version may be a better value. It wont do anything an Endura wont do.

Paracord creeps me out. "Blood and fat?" Can you imagine the cooties that'd grow in the weave? Ewwwwww.

Soaked in epoxy it won't pick up moisture, it turns into a kind of very roughly formed plastic handle.

I find cord wrapped handles about as ugly as handles can get, and there is a problem even with water soaking in, held next to the tang and corroding it. But they do provide an unsurpassed grip and they can be replaced pretty easily, once you get one of the many techniques down, some of them fairly simple.

I don't think I'm ever going to own a knife with a wrapped handle. Micarta, steel, or kevlar/hytrel handles are just too effective and comfortable to live/work with.
