What's with all the chatting in FS threads?

I'm not talking about newbies who haven't found time to read the forum rules. I'm talking about folks who have been here for years and know full well that cluttering up FS threads with inane comments is against the rules and yet they do it anyway. Why? Enquiring minds want to know.

I have not commented, but some of the crazy prices these guys are asking for their knives ,would lead some to protest for sure.Guys if your not buying please no needless comments

It's a trend I've noticed that, whenever someone declares the price of something, other people must comment.
I think it's an untreated compulsive disorder that goes undiagnosed because it doesn't impact their ability to maintain a reasonable standard of living.

I'd never go into my barbershop and mention the price of gasoline unless I had 45 minutes to kill.

Edit: Also... Sweet knife, bro.

Kids will be kids, but it is against the rules.
It doesn't really bother me in others ads(since it doesn't cause any sort of bump), but if it is disruptive to the sellers ad, He(or she) should certainly report it. I personally don't like a bunch of chit chat in my ads, and certainly not before the sale is made. So bottom line, I think it is up to the seller, along with moderators help, to control their ads as they want.
But as stated it is against the rules - if you like it, hit the like button. if you don't like the price, hold your opinion, no matter how hard
IMO

I see mods removing commentary all the time. I suspect it happens when they see it themselves just as when someone reports it. My point is, don't they have a hard enough time managing BS without seasoned members adding to it? I think that most (all?) of us appreciate the mods' efforts in keeping this place at or above a minimum standard. Is it really that hard to show a little appreciation for the thankless job they do by not wasting their time and just following clearly posted rules?

If a seller sets up notifications to replies in his own FS thread so he does not need to keep such a close eye on it, I would think it obnoxious to have to deal with chatting that notified him of a potential sale or legitimate question. Even if some tolerate it, when folks get used to doing it, they do it EVERYWHERE, which makes it a PITA for those of us who don't want it.

Sometimes member's avatars ^ ^ become distracting to other members and they get all discombobulated and lose their bearings and post stuff where it shouldn't be discussed and before you know it global warming causes another polar vortex and the Cubs are in the pennant chase...and...what were we talking about again?

Some people do to try to fix the problem. Once I made the mistake of asking for the dimensions of a fixed blade knife that were not posted in a sale. The seller was a real sh!t stain about quoting the rule against trashing his thread and quoted it for all to see, regardless of the fact people ask that question a lot. However, I was technically in the wrong, and his vexation most justly chastised my egregious transgression. (I am reading the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin)

BTW, guess how many of his offerings I have since purchased?

Yeah, "Sweet knife bro" is annoying on occasion but it's not the end of the world for me. Then again, I can't seem to ever sell anything here, so maybe, secretly, I enjoy the comments? Hard to tell for sure. 🙃

Some prefer that all ?'s are asked outside the thread,(and should provide the means to do so) but asking a ? needed to clarify the description of the item, is not against the rules. (as I see it)

Is complementing someone’s work inane? Seems to happen often on the knife maker’s for sale sub forum. When I see some of the beautifully crafted work there I can understand why people want to acknowledge it, especially their peers.

The knifemaker's sections has different rules than the individual sales sections on that. It's right in the rule under discussion here (#5).

Please check out the only two consecutive underlined sentences in the entire rules for the exchange:

It shouldn't be tolerated, it costs sales because if you are quickly scanning the new sales threads, a lot of people will not click on a post with replies assuming that it's likely sold.
Things have been a little slower lately, but when there are a few dozen new classifieds posted and you're quickly scanning them, I know I am not the only person that won't bother clicking on a thread for something I might only have mild interest in if I see there's been replies.
If it's something I am specifically looking for, I will probably still check, but there have been many times where I have a little bit of interest in a post and ended up picking up the knife, but would never have clicked on it if I saw it already had replies.
When you only have 10 or 15 minutes to spare and there are a lot of posts on a variety of different subforums, I don't bother looking at threads that have replies.

On the up side, if you are a seller and make it absolutely clear that you do not want ANY POSTS except "I'LL TAKE IT", most people respect that. That includes any legitimate questions.
Is there a way to delete these unwanted comments? I forget if you can delete them yourself or if you have to ask a mod.
Either way you it's unacceptable, and it's no secret that some people will purposely post a comment to deter other buyers while they consider whether or not to buy the knife.

What? If I see multiple replies these days, I generally assume the knife IS still for sale and it was a bunch of dudes trying to offer trades in the comments and getting shot down. I'd never pass by a sales thread for something I was interested in just because it had comments, but that's just me.

What I personally enjoy is seeing someone try to ask questions about a knife and someone else immediately claims it. LOL Such a boss move.
