What's with all the chatting in FS threads?

Seems to be a lot of whining over something that really isn’t much of an issue. This is the wrong place for this thread to begin with. 🤦‍♂️

Slap yourself in the forehead again, this thread is probably most appropriate here since it deals with the Exchange; it works well in Tech Support also but the replies there will just be to report the offenders.

This should be in general discussion. And the other thread you think you so brilliantly called me out in belongs in whine and cheese. You should pay attention. GBU should be for exactly that not just general discussions.

If by general discussion you mean General Knife Discussion, then no, that's not right. Posts not about knives don't belong in General Knife Discussion. That's why mods move them out of there. GBU is the normal place for meta posts on sales threads, sometimes Tech Support as well

Chatting, comments or whatever else not pertaining directly to the sale isn't allowed. The simple reason is because it easily leads to price questioning. To those who like the positive comments what about the negative?

This forum isn't a hobby for me, it's a means to an end.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a member spending hours sifting through every thread to find any possible opportunity to insert an opinion, try and make a witty remark, fulfill a need to be heard, or for validation or whatever.
Members use the forums in very different ways, and that's the way it should be IMO.
The flip side are the members that want to spend minimal time finding the info they're after or sifting through classifieds loading page after page of sales threads.

So over the years we settled on a couple of rules so that everyone is as happy as possible.

Of course all of this isn't a big deal, except when a conversation devolves into who can get in the last word while walking the thinnest of lines (usually learned through participating in lots of similar conversations) along the boundaries of "not nice" behavior that has to be moderated or met with consequences.

Breaking the sales thread rules happen to be one of the only situations I find particularly irritating, especially when a seller asks politely not to post, or when the motives are questionable.

Again, not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I definitely think it's a good rule.

I suppose it's because as part of my job I see kids that derive immense pleasure from being a "scooch'a damenz" and it's childish and irritating.

Anyway, what brought me here was that I was literally at that moment thinking about the exact same thing the OP wrote when I saw the title of this thread.

I just got homesick. I haven't heard anyone called a "scooch" in a while. (Except it was always pronounced "scooch-a-menz" back in the old neighborhoods.)

Extra points for you. Brought a smile.

I can't find the meat thread and absolutely need to see it. The 1-liners flung around here are brilliant.

To those who ask where should the one be drawn? Simple, limit 2-3 non-I'll take it or questions exactly pertaining to condition of the knife etc. and have to only be in positive nature. Any negative comments are immediately banned. For example "sweet knife" and "GLWS" shall be allowed but "aren't these $109 retail on knivesmakeusthirsty.com?" aren't. It is that treat others as you'd want to be treated type thing and if you were listing the knife ask yourself "would you want someone posting this comment in my sales thread?" If you are a chatterer or an attention getter and see that 2-3 comments of such nature were already left then find yourself another thread to be a part of.
I think what would be an awesome rule is if someone posts a negative or detracting comment in another's sales thread and the knife doesn't sell within a week's time, then that person has to buy the other person's membership next year. Seems fair right?

And then carelessly I posted in the meat thread. 🤦‍♂️

Closing an ad to comments also makes it impossible for non-paying members to communicate with sellers unless the seller provides some alternative to PMs. Also, if I see a FS thread is locked (closed), I assume the item is already sold and generally do not bother even looking at the post.
It also completely negates the ability to leave feedback… Most of my deals are completed via PM but I still have to go post in the thread to be able to leave feedback.

I don’t really mind comments in my sales threads. It’s not like I’m transactin’ super serrius bidness with stocks and bonds being traded for huuuuge tracts o’ land. 😆 I’m selling a fuggin’ knife. Somebody wants to say “nice knife” it’s pretty much “whatever” for me.🤷‍♂️

If you were at a gun show and a gent was eyeing something on your table and asking about it and somebody else walked up, would you scream “GTFOH! I’m transacting serious bidness!”? Hell no you wouldn’t. I don’t see it as all that much different.

This is no longer the case. The need to post for feedback went away with the big update.

^ This.....So much of what the online world is really just a poor mirror of what behavior and business is like in person. Imagine if all those keyboard warriors (speaking outside of this forum) involved in capitol riot or BLM or any online mistreatment of others now seen widespread across twitter and facebook, would actually act like that in person. Most wouldn't or don't and thus why would you slap the hand of a fellow bystander who wants to openly admire what you are offering? By that same measure I reckon most who do purposefully clutter other's sales would likely not do so in person like coming up at a blade show and barking all kinds of questions and comments not related pushing ahead of others in the line. Ah if only the online world were that simple. 🙄

You keep talking like you're someone who's been a member here for years and years, yet your account is just a little over a year old and you've got like 134 comments. What gives? ""Over the years we settled on a couple of rules"? Settle that in your one (1!) feedbacked transaction, did you?
