What's with all the chatting in FS threads?

This is why we will bring back corporal punishment to bladeforums.

First infraction: Caning

Second Infraction: Clubbing

Third Infraction: Firing Squad

Fourth Infraction: Firing Squad followed by Hanging

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

That is all.

Seriously folks, help us out. We only have so many unpaid hours in a day and try to keep the playing field level for all of our members.

Thanks.

I always put in " comments welcome " and I mean it and as far as I know it is not against the rules since I have ok'ed it . Correct me if I am wrong please .
As a KnifeMaker it is perfectly acceptable if you welcome comments per Sparks exchange rules.

Buyers/Buying -

5. Do not post in a person's thread unless you have an implicit interest in buying the item. Posts like, "Nice knife!", "Why is the price so high/low?", "I wish I had funds" are not allowed. This means absolutely no commentary or feedback in someone's sales thread. Seriously, if you stomp on someone's ad, your account can and will be locked. The only exception to this is in the Knife Makers Market areas (if the maker/craftsman requests and welcomes feedback). Save questions and offers for email rather than cluttering the thread.

It happens anyway, even if "comments welcome" is not posted. I have probably been guilty of it myself. But really how likely is it someone is going to report you for saying "Beautiful knife!"?

In the knifemaker's section, not very.
In the For Sale by Individuals section, the odds of it happening definitely increase.

I seldom post anything on a sales thread unless I am interested, but I can enjoy some of the exchange as long as it is on topic. It provides an immediate insight on the seller and how they comport themselves may help me to decide whether I wish to trade with them. This is especially true when the seller is relatively new and unknown.

Outside those intentionally doing it, I think this can occur unintentionally when people reply to posts in a search result or view threads via the “New Posts” link and don’t pay close enough attention to what forum the post is actually part of.

Send them a PM if you want to chat. The rules say don’t do it in the sales threads for a reason. I report most people I see because it’s bullshit that people still do it.

Personal preferences and intentions have nothing to do with the rule discussed here. Considering that this is one of the few places left where you can hope to get a decent dollar for your knife without the absurd bite that the Ebay/consignment sites/Paypal takes these days, chit-chat /emojis have no place in a sales thread except in blademakers sale forum.

If the seller has requested no commentary, it's mostly respected- but when it isn't it should be reported. Seeing any replies- but especially multiple replies- in a sales thread affects how many potential buyers are going to view the thread.

By all means celebrate the love you have for a certain knife or the modifications the seller has done, but PM them.

I haven't sold in a while, anyone remember if the OP can delete comments in their sales thread or create the thread so that no comments can be posted in the first place? If not, it would be nice to be able to do so... and make less work for the mods.

Considering that 99% of people seem to delete the selling price the minute their knife has been sold, I think it's fair to say that we have established some fairly specific etiquette in the Blade Exchange Forum.
Many of us buy/sell/trade knives that cost more than firearms, and many of us can't afford to have more than a few really nice pieces at those high prices... especially those of us that don't "flip" knives for profit, but just expect most high end pieces to hold their value.

Seems to be a lot of whining over something that really isn’t much of an issue. This is the wrong place for this thread to begin with. 🤦‍♂️ If the knife is something I’m interested in I’ll checks it out regardless if it has replies or not. That has to be some of the dumbest logic I’ve heard here.

While I’m never excited about unnecessary posts in my sales threads, I can always repost after two weeks, and start a clean thread. I have never bothered the mods about it, and probably have been guilty of it myself, early on in my membership, and after a few drinks. If it is a popular knife, and priced right to sell fast, the comments most likely won’t hinder the ultimate sale. The most annoying thing about it, is getting a notification, only to find out that it is not a serious buyer.

We cannot delete others' posts in our ads...but we CAN close the ads to comments. Unfortunately, doing so reduces the views significantly; likely because it usually isn't done unless/until the item is sold.

Closing an ad to comments also makes it impossible for non-paying members to communicate with sellers unless the seller provides some alternative to PMs. Also, if I see a FS thread is locked (closed), I assume the item is already sold and generally do not bother even looking at the post.

They still could post in the seller's profile page, but I fully agree with the second part. If I see a thread is locked, I presume the item is sold and I rarely check it out, unless I just want to see the photo.

I'm not the only one that thinks this way. As I said, if it's something I really am hunting for, I will check it out, but I impulse buy once in a while like many others here.

No one is whining, some serious money exchanges hands here so we have a code of conduct in sales threads. No more, no less.

Because this rule exists, it is reasonable to assume if a sale thread has a reply it's spoken for.

I’d never assume a reply = a sale. As you said some serious money can be involved so it’s also reasonable to assume that there may be questions before parting with serious money.

I'm kind of for it and against it. I guess the like the old motto goes "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all." I appreciate the older members here speaking out on this and hopefully for the most part Bladeforums will remain as is today and in the past with the rules. The only times I'd make an exception would be in certain cases and put appreciation.
Sure it doesn't do the seller any good to have a nice comment or flooded with "cool knife bro" comments. However, not long ago a member who's been on here for years made a comment on my CRK listing such as "Beautiful knife, GLWS." Honestly it made me feel great, especially to know this guy whom I don't know personally but has great tasted in knives (from his avatar) appreciated my knife for sale. Yet later the mods took it down saying it is still clutter. Did it hurt the sale, no, did it help the sale leaving it up? Possibly, however the real thing was it was nice to see another member giving the thumbs up for not only a knife you enjoyed but also like the time it took to create and complete the listing.
By contrast, another fella posted simply "DOB?" Now this actually offended me and I eventually reported and was removed. Here's why....in the description I clearly mentioned the knife included the original box and all the accessories (which were in the photos) but that I had lost my B-day card (yes I know a tragedy). (CRK could easily make another for him as well) Thus I was offended and felt like true clutter when a guy popped in and posted "DOB?". It's like clearly if you were really interested in the knife you would have taken time to read the whole description (less than this post) and known that likely couldn't provide the exact date (unless you have super memory) but that it was mid 2020.

Thus I think there is a line to be drawn to allow for some chatter while others not so.
