What's your beater knife?

I actually find the term a bit amusing. Although a rare thing, I have beat a few knives in my time. One was an old Kabar that belonged to my uncle. Against his wishes, I used that old knife as a throwing implement. In the process, I managed to mangle the handle and dent the edge in a couple of places and draw the ire of a man who had much more experience than myself with edged tools. He made me mow lawns one summer to replace his old faithful friend that I brought to an early demise.

These days I beat on my Tramontina machete with nary a worry. A notable mention extends to my solidly functional Buck 119 that rides in the car each and every day to and from work. Of course, we have the venerable Mora which has stood the test of time and just about everything else...but the award goes to my Busse Basic 9. If so inclined, you can wade through my previous posts for the salient details.

I don't abuse any of my knives, but some are used for more nasty tasks than others. I won't use one of my nice traditionals to cut shingles or sheetrock, but in a pinch, I would hesistate to use some of my cheaper and easier to clean/sharpen knives.

I carried the RAT 1 in my tool bags (construction) for a few years and it is as solid as when I bought it. The scales are smooth and the blade is scratched up, but it has done all I ever asked of it, including a few things I wouldn't normally recommend a knife for.

I have a new favorite, the Enlan EL01. An excellent work knife, I have used it to cut insulation, trim sheetrock, cut out holes in asphalt roofing, and in a pinch, cut wire. Great knife, holds an edge well and sharpens easily.

My beater is the knife that's in my pocket. Since 1-7-15, it's been this.

For me it will be my Spyderco Endura 4, combo edge. I am somehow waiting for it to give up so I can justify buying a full flat ground one... The saber grind makes it a bad slicer but I don't sweat it if I have to saw through whatever with it.

My Emerson CQC-15. I find the thumb-disc opener to be excellent when wearing gloves. The position and knurling allow the knife to be opened very easily, even with insulated leather work gloves on.

That, and I consider every scratch and square mm of scuffed G10 to be marks of pride on a knife that is meant to be used.

Though my Manixes and PM2 aren't far behind.

I feel the same about my Endura 4 with Saber grind - Scratches are a sign of character on an EDC knife.

When I work in the yard or garage I tend to gravitate towards two knives. A BM 910 (knife on the left) and BK9 (bottom fixed blade).

I have a Kershaw Strobe that is my beater knife. I have been pleasantly surprised by the Chinese steel on it.

EDC beater.. When I'm out of town, doing work that might require abuse, possibility of it being stolen, etc. I take the RAT1.

My beater is my old large Buck Vantage select. I use it on my PWC to cut weeds out of the impeller, and my fiance uses it out in the garden. I think I'm going to buy a new "water knife" this year so it will probably be relegated to just garden duty. Great inexpensive knife
