What's your Cold Steel EDC today?

Received and installed a set of Scalegarden OD micarta scales for my OD/blk AD15 today. Hot dang they sure improve the feel and draw of the knife, look great and fit perfect.

Here’s my full write up of the purchase experience in GKD, if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I know, I know, no pics. Anyway, that’s what I’m carrying tonight.

Replaced my Recon 1 spearpoint with my Air Lite spear point when I got home from work yesterday.

Carrying my Code 4 spearpoint today. And my Hold Out 3 is in the bottom of my right front pocket.

I love to edc either of my Cold Steel Air Lites; spear point or tanto... today is the tanto. Very thin and light, with just the right size blade of AUS10A.

I've always been a bit leery of the strength of knives with G10 scales and no liners. Then, I saw a video of a gentlemen prying nails out of three different pieces of wood of various hardness using an Air Lite (tanto version). It was sort of hair-raising to watch; I was expecting the worst at any second. But the knife prevailed, and with no damage to its action.

I really doubt I'd ever use any of my knives (maybe my Cold Steel G.I. tanto?) to pry out nails, but you never know... It's comforting knowing this slender, light-weight knife is tough enough to handle that kind of task if necessary.

I was often afraid of linerless G10 as well, but I'm a believer now. As much as I'm not a fan of Joe X making absurd judgement calls when he destroys a knife when abused well outside of the intended uses, him wailing on a Recon 1 inspired me to pull the trigger on a Prime Day special of the tanto variety yesterday. Even after he got done with it, the Tri Ad still locked up (mostly) and the handle was the only thing left intact.

I have a 6" Counter Point sporting the linerless G10, and I love the knife. I love the grippiness of G10, the way the steel behaves, etc. I couldn't pass up a chance for something built the same way with the same steel but in a less pocket-swordy size for under 80 bones:D If I like it, I might get a Snaggletooth for it and see if it displaces my full size benchmade Adamas for awhile. Tall ask, but I'm actually pretty excited to try the Recon out.

I don't think you'll be the least bit disappointed with the Recon 1 tanto. The Recon 1 has much thicker/sturdier scales than the Air Lites. (I don't think any other knife in my collection fits my XL-size hand better; the Recon 1 feels like it was made for me.)

Joe x is nuts of course, but as long as he is nuts with his own money and on his own lands it’s fine with me, and he is sort of entertaining from time to time.

Marlboro! 🤣

Yeah I absolutely find nothing that he does of any empirical value, and it boggles my mind when he'll spend an entire afternoon trying to destroy a knife only to read down in the comments sections, "You just saved me a bunch of money! No way I'd buy a piece of crap that breaks that easily!"

However, when it takes me a 20 minute video to kill something, I take notice. The Recon in S35VN seemed to take a lot of flex and deformed before it broke. I never expect a folding knife to take that kind of abuse, but at least CS seems to still be cranking out quality stuff.

The few folders I ve bought from Cold Steel since the sale of the company seem to be as well made as the ones I bought pre sale.

The new models are kind of expensive, but the old models can still be found for prices that make them some of the best value folders on the market.

I totally agree. My first "expensive" knife was a Trailmaster in Carbon V back in 2002-ish. I have always appreciated how tough their products are. I love the specialty line. I probably have 10 hawks and axes, 5 or 6 fixed blades, and 5 or 6 folders (the more classic pre-sale models), and my wonderful wife bought me a Viking Sword for Fathers Dad because she's awesome 😎. I think I have 5 or 6 CS products I have purchased since the company was sold. All of them have been just as good as what I purchased before.

I agree with you on the pricing of the new stuff. I'm not dropping 200 or 300 dollars on a Cold Steel when bumping up to 400 or 500 will get me up to the next tier or refinement. However, the folders in the $150 and under range are great values.

That said, I have a trip out west coming up next year, and I don't think a large fixed blade would make sense for the hiking I will be doing. The 5 Max is starting to look like a contender to fit my needs ;)
