What's your Cold Steel EDC today?

Does anyone remember the Shinobu Folders from Cold Steel during the late 1980's? I had some of them back then but sold them off, except for a broken one that I had bought for something like $6. Well I decided to make a fixed blade knife with it and this is what I came up with. I used the blade and the lock back piece that hooks into the back spine of the blade. I fit those two pieces into a block of ebony wood with some nickel silver pins and a piece of stainless tubing and epoxied them all together. I shaped it to make the handle and then layered on a bunch of polyurethane. Finally I carved out a hard scabbard using oak for a little color contrast. I assembled the two halves again using nickel silver pins and finishing with lots of layers clear polyurethane. I also managed to glue some felt pieces inside the scabbard to make the blade fit like a glove and prevent the blade from moving, rattling or falling out. Here it is.

Picked a couple of these up recently for good prices. Haven’t had one for probably ten years or so, and not sure why I got rid of that one. Forgot what an easy carry it is and how much I like it. A Mummert clip definitely makes the sheath a better IWB than the weird flat clip they come with. I imagine an UltiClip would work better, too.

I have a SR1 & Snaggletooth coming in the next 3 days and I cannot wait to put it all together! Pictures will be forthcoming shortly!

Fixed blade Friday, dusted off this old school Cold Steel "Desperado" boot knife to show it some love😎

The Desperado is why my left little finger no longer works at full capacity since 2003. I sheathed it sloppily and caught my tendon and after a failed surgery, my finger just kinda half works. 🤷

Those Cold Steel serrations are sharp, boys and girls ;)

This is what will probably make it to my EDC rotation for a foreseeable stretch. My wife and daughter came through with gentle nudging and hooked me up with a Talwar for Fathers Day.

I still want an XL, but honestly I don't carry my 5+" folders much because they are just over the top. The 5 Max probably makes the most sense since it can actually damn near be used as a replacement for a fixed blade, but I think the 4" blades are more practical in general.

The Talwar is a model I've never really checked out. I'm looking at my retailer's website right now; do yours have the 4 inch blade or the 5.5 inch blade?

I have several of the mega folders, and they have their place, but I rarely carry them simply because in my day to day, a giant folder is only going to get in the way and get more sideways looks than a knife or "reasonable" size.

I opted to get the 4" version (actually my wife and daughter got it for me for Father's Day) in plain edge, and it doesn't disappoint. It's still a big honkin' knife, just not by Cold Steel standards ;)

I plan on getting the larger version with a serrated edge as a defensive option. I keep the 5 Max in my hiking kit. I carry a Counterpoint XL in my boot. The Mayhem has been a bit of a misfire for me, but a 5.5" Talwar would be good in some situations.

However, day to day, the 4" version is a great hard use EDC.
