What's your ideal number?

I am down to 14 and holding but might halve that.
The ones not in the pic are two Fallkniven TK4 folders, an Alox Farmer, Benchmade Phaeton and a Wenger Blades Companion. Been carrying the Phaeton and a TK4 daily for more than a year.

My "ideal" #?

IDK, somewhere around 200 of the rarest & most desirable knives out of the over 450 knives currently in my collection but don't hold me to that!

LOL! 😉

Did you knap those arrowheads yourself? They are fantastic!

Top one was bought while on family vacation in the Ozark's 50 some years ago? Probably knapped by the guy running the roadside stand.

Larger one is authentic. Found by my sis after turning soil in one of the fields on her land in southern Illinois. She has found quite a few large stone tools over the years. Most are now in possession of SIU along with locations where they were found.

That's awesome, I grew up in the Ozarks and we would find arrowheads in some of my grandparents cornfields during plowing, most of them broken though. I've got a jar of them in my garage somewhere ☺️

"Collecting" mens different things to different people.

I have been associated with collectors of photographic related stuff. Another , more casial association, has been with collectors of firearms and military gear. In both fields, there sre serious collectors who specialize or narrow their focus.

For instance, I knew of folks who only acquire cameras and lenses made before 1950 by Leitz (brand named "Leica""). Others will only acquire Leica copies from the USSR, branded Zorki or Pax. Ok, go figure . . .Another guy I know only has an interest in the old "Sterio" cameras and the gear for viewing the images.

In the field of firearms, I kn ow of folks who collect American firearms (or British, German or Russian) from the period of WW-II, WW-i, the US Civil war . . .and so on.

What I perceive to be the case with "collectors" on this board is that a lot of folks buy whatever they like at the the time without regard to what they already have. In other ords, IMHO, most knife guys acquire, not collect. Others may tend to buy knives from one or another maker, but not with the idea of putting together a set of what that maker has done. I know guys who have every model of Kodak "vest pocket" folding cameras displayed in their catalog of 1938 (yeah it takes all kinds). I know another guy who is trying to acquire an M1 rifle made by each of the several makers from 1930s onwards. . . .in original as-issued condition, not arsenal refurbished in South Korea.

Who here has a collection of Gerber Mk-ii daggers from 1970 through, say 2010 . . .or is looking to get every variation of Buck 110 made before (arbitrarily) 1995?

Additionally, it is my view that a true collector is really a possessor, not a user. IT CAN BECOME A FORM OF HOARDING REALLY.

What does "knife collector" mean to you?

Does it mean someone who specializes in a narrow niche of the knife universe by aquiring representative examples of that niche and avidly learn the various bits of their history?

Is it someone who speculates on knives as a commodity, hoping they will increase in vlue . . .buying only pristine, new-in-the-box examples and stacking them on a closet shelf like cordwood?

Or does it mean someone who spends a significant portion of disposable income on whatever grbs his fancy?

All are welcome to comment.
