What's your ideal number?

Pretty much anybody that buys knives that they want but don’t need.

Non-collectors generally only buy knives that they need or they buy them for gifts.

Just my opinion, of course.
Dang, that's the most concise definition I've ever heard. Seconded!

Tripled, thirded etc

Can’t find any flaws in that statement. But i have often wondered if at some point collecting can become hoarding. And if so what distinguishes the difference.

In the interest of corralling redundancy, a couple of threads have been merged.

I would put it at N+1. The N value is irrelevant to me. It can go up or down over time. To me, it's the +1 part that makes it most interesting. It could be a specific target. Or, it could be something you stumble across that makes you go "Wow!", "Cool!", or "Interesting!". Then, after you acquire it, you get to use it and learn it for a while as the next +1 approaches.

I've accumulated about fifty folding knives through the years. I took a bunch out for cleaning and ended up taking a photo (that I can't attach). I don't have anything super fancy, just varying levels of production knives. A lot of Spyderco and Benchmade. Usually when an interesting locking mechanism or cool blade shape comes out, I can't resist buying one. I really like a lot of them, but I've decided I should sell them to people that may actually use them or get more joy out of them since mine just sit in a case. My goal is to get down to about 10-- just the sentimental ones and the ones I EDC or use for specific purposes.

Settled on #13(my lucky number).10 folders and 3 fixed.Had way more before but was too much too take care off.
Lowest I will go if I ever decide to downsize is 7 total(6 folders and 1 fixed). One for every day of the week ;)

I was going to say just one more. However many I have, I just want one more. But then I saw this:

More than 100 less than 500!! 😱🫣🤔
John 😁

And I think John is right. 100 more is even better than one more.
So the ideal number is 100 more than I currently have at any given time.
I keep telling myself with each purchase that I'm getting closer and closer.

Like all interests and hobbies, will keep it going until it doesn't, but I feel like its late game, a couple more and its game, nostalgia is a drug but back in those days that I started collecting it felt like there was a world of combinations and possibilities, now, unless it has a very narrow criteria, I won't even consider it for the collection...

The numbers will vary for people but a ''manageable'' number seems about the healthiest, I look at some youtubers with those massive collections and at that point its just a +1 for the pile.

7, .... 1 for each day of the week.
Realistically, you can only carry 1 at a time in your pocket.
