Hal, that Delrin 236 is a lovely little deb. Eric, thanks for the cuts out of the old catalog. Here are a couple that don't show up too often. The 896Y is the ubiquitous 3 9/16 slim stockman frame. The 890Y has been polished, hence the weird color cast in my scanner, and has a half stop on the clip blade. They are both Waldens and have pattern # on pile side. I don't know if they are cell or not. No shrinkage.

Wow, what a couple of nice Old Yellers Calvin. Never say an 890Y before. Both are great additions.

I notice the speys are a different style too. I've had a yellow plastic before that was not delrin. There was like an extra white liner between the cell and the back of the brass liner, and the plastic was translucent. Yours appear to have the rivets visible inside the handle. Whatever they are, it is the very pretty yellow color.

I just ordered an Ulster 58 OT that is said to be mint from an online source (not eBay). I paid $44.99 including shipping & insurance. Is that a good price? I'm really looking forward to getting this knife because I really like the turkish clip on a stockman. This is the first non-stainless blade I've ever purchased. I had to see what the fuss is about.

Neat. 890Y is a new one to me. These surprises never quit. Makes Schrade collecting THE BEST !

Aggiebuilder --

Your 8OT project knife is beautiful !!

Happy for you that you were able to turn it around from it's condition as arrived.

After seeing that, Of Course, this means now I'll have to squint at all the SW 8OT auction pics!!

I appreciate your enthusiasm there Howie. I was glad to get it. Those original bone Old Timers are hard ones to come by.

I have two from off the bay. One is pretty close to mint, I think with shipping and all it was around $20. Some go for more, some go for less. If you got the bling to go with it I'd say you did well.

Price paid is not of the same lasting importance as satisfaction gained.
If you really like the knife, if it somehow 'moves' you inside, now, it still will for many years to come. Those are the knives to go for. If you pay a little more than the last guy, so what, you're going to feel years of pleasure.
roland (who has no problem justifying any expenditure on knives)

58OT does not often come around in mint condition. This particular pattern seemed to come in quite a few handle colors, even though they are almost all delrin. Be sure and post pics when it comes in.

From the seller's pic (which was removed as soon as the transaction was over) the handles seem to be the brown most Old Timers have. The difference is that the brown is solid all the way to the end...it doesn't fade to a tan at the ends. I will post a picture when I get it. I bought it through a vendor from the AAPK site. Has anyone dealt with them before?

I've bought several knives from the AAPK stores. All good transactions. Solid browns and reds are probably more common in the 58OT's, especially the older ones I think. They all have polished carbon steel.

I've bought Ten or so knives through the site, various vendors, never had a problem.

I'm glad no one has had a problem with AAPK. This deal seemed to good to be true. I think this knife was available because it was listed under Ulster instead of Schrade.

What other color variations are there?

I meant the solid dark brown and reds were more common with the Ulsters, while the tan and cream mix are more common with Schrades. Probably has more to do with age, than anything. None of the colors are rare or significant, unless you find a bone example.

Oh. I was looking on the Collectors of Schrade website and I saw in a 1961 Ulster short line catalog the 58oT. The flyer referred to "Meerschaum bone" handles. is this ad-speak for delrin or is it something else?

Hi! I'm not a Schrade collector, but I am a knife accumulator and I do have some Schrades. I thought I'd post my two latest Schrades for you. I do have an ulterior motive which follows the pictures.

First is a little UH courtesy of the NTSA, an airport confiscation. In good shape. I bought it for a give away. That will come eventually.

and here is a trapper I bought recently. I would like to know who made this knife and if it was indeed made by Schrade:

It was very pointy and very sharp. Overall the quality is pretty good; I am very satisfied with it. Just want to know a little more about the background.

The single blade trapper is a Bear MFG knife, contacted by Taylor post 2004, after Schrade was gone.

The early Delrin was called Meerschaum early on marketing material of Schrade, but is it all the same type stuff. They used it in the 8OT marketing stuff too. Ulster has been known as the maker of the 58OT for the most part by collectors.

Thawk, that's a two blade trapper. I don't think that requires any change to your answer though. Thanks for the information. I didn't think it was made by the Schrade company, but didn't know who might have. I appreciate your input. The only thing I don't like is the slight recurve in the edge close to the choil. I have a tough time resharping a recure with my flat stones.

Ed

I bought three of those Bear knives back in '07, before I knew better, a stockman, a muskrat and that trapper. Not only do they compare pretty well to the latter day Schrades in workmanship, they have very pretty bone. But, of course, they are not Schrades. There is another run of non-Schrade U.S. made (?) knives on the... um... site on a regular basis with the "Everlastingly Sharp" etch and genuine bone handles. They are amber, red, or green. At least one of them mimics the 897UH frame. I suspect they are Bear knives. I haven't looked closely, however; they are Chinese if they don't have the USA stamp.
