That Asten shield was for an SFO for a paper company, I think out of Maine if my memory serves me correctly (which is doubtful!). They were a pretty good customer I believe, judging by the number of OT models I've seen with that shield. Nice snags!!

O.K., so here's what i really want to know: which one of you guys won this ?:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330298688520&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=014

Within 5 seconds of seeing this one, I pulled the trigger! I heard my Visa card, battered by Christmas, give one last breath, and expire!!:(

But the knife is even better in person!!:D

The scratches and double reflections are from my battered scanner . .sorry!!
When my Visa recovers, that may have to be my next purchase:grumpy:!

Waynorth, what are the numbers on the other side? is that a salesman sample or something?

Here's a better look at the etch!

Once again, the white "smudge"? is on the glass. I think I have mystery guests in my computer room!

I saw that myself Charlie, glad you grabbed it, little bit "waynorth" of my pocket. :D:thumbup:

Short answer - YES!
Holy Grail for some of us. A little extra proof that it hasn't been used/sharpened.
The salesman could write the order from that number;
"three dozen C9463 3/4s" for Joe's hardware, if you get the idea.
I think C is for corkscrew, 9 is a 4 blade with 2 at each end (sort of),
46 is the pattern or style, and the 3 stands for bone stag (jigged bone).
The 3/4 means a clip main instead of a spear.

Charlie, that thing is just plain stunning!!! I think I'll be drooling all night long now!

Hard to put it down, Dave. Here's a shot of the back. You know, I can't really find any flaws in this one. There's usually something, some scratch so the knife gods aren't offended. I better watch for lightning!! - - - -:D

Charlie, that knife looks much more stunning posted on this forum than it did on Ebay. I recall it going off the table quite quickly. Now I know where the smoking gun was! What a beauty! Very cool knife. What is that shield style?

Here is my latest. An 834B in the box marked with the pattern number. No Schrade marking on the top of the box like with an Uncle Henry or Old Timer. The brown box possibly dates it after they quit using the View Pak plastic tubes. Tubes were still shown in the 1982 catalog. I have not seen too many Open Stock knives in boxes, although I do have a 219 in a completely unmarked brown box. Possibly shows how long they might have still used a Schrade NY stamp.

Never have seen the 834B in a catalog. I have another one, but it came without packaging. It is smooth black delrin, no saw cuts.

Bad time of year for outside mid-week pictures so here's a kitchen table shot. It still has frost on the blades from sitting on the porch.

I have heard that shield called a banner shield, Hal. Long, to facilitate engraving of some kind.
I wonder if the 834B was an SFO??

I don't know if it was an SFO or not. They were doing a production 708B for awhile there. I've only seen two of the 834B, which is not marked on the knife like that. They were both worthy of grabbing.

Charlie, that knife is pristine! You're giving Mike some serious competition with that one! Congrats!!

Hal, that knife may even go back to the mid-seventies. I've got the Armed Forces bicentennial knives, which I think came out in 1975, in the same style boxes.

How about some pictures of those knives, Eric?

Ok, here they are, all #0078:

And a detail of one of them, I'm fairly certain these were made over at the Imperial plant as the blades are the "hammer forged" variety. They can be found back to few Keen Kutter knives as well.

THANKS!!! I've never seen those before, but like them a lot. Now I gotta get hold of one of those Marine Corps ones!

If things don't start improving with this economy I may be putting them up for sale before long:grumpy::grumpy:

That would really suck if you have to do that, but if you do, please let me know when you post them!

I don't think the 834B is that old, but not at all sure. My box is the one with the sponge liner, instead of the older felt covered cardboard. The oldest ones were the felt covered plastic, and I think those were hinged.

Those knives I've seen a few times Eric, but not too many. I like that slanted display box too Larry. Nice ones.
