Here's a picture I did to show the ages of older Schrade jigging. The three on the right I think of as "pickbone", because it looks hand chipped, or picked. The three in the middle are machine assisted IMO, and the three at left are too, but have the finer cut most seem to accept as Peachseed, which occurs on later Schrade Cut, and Schrade Walden knives.

Charlie,

I agree the jigging on your 4th from the left is the same as the EO I posted, but I don't see any that look like the first Wolfertz I posted.

Some of the jigging is 45' to most of the jig, and has a texture to the cut as if it was done with a gouge. The majority of the jigging is smooth on the botton of the cut.

Maybe this was added by hand after hafting, to fill out the jig pattern on the top and bottom of the covers ?

Fran

Thanks Fran and Charlie. these variations in jigging are challenging to learn but necessary to be able to "read the knife". that Fran can spot the Wolfertz jigging as other than Schrade, shows a level of discernment that can only come from much experience. Charlie's pic is a fine reference to be saved.
actually Charlie, in your spare time, you could put together a GREAT 2010 Schrade Cut. Co. calendar with each month showing a different pattern and jigging with a brief description. "everybody" will buy one and save it forever.

You give me far too much credit, Roland.

I'm just waiting for someone to come along and correct me.....again ! :foot:

I think Charlie might have something that resembles Roland's remark! How about a sample month Mr. Peachseed of the north.

Mr. Peachseed ?

The first 11 months should be fine, but I'm a little nervous about December. :p

Can you imagine yourself walking into a hardware store and seeing those 2 Stock knives looking that fantastic and in a display case with many others just as fine ? that's how it was 50 and more years ago. Pretty Amazing !

WELL--- excellent quick response Charlie. this will be a calendar that will not be discarded in 2011, or 2012, ---, or 2050 ! it will outlive even Playboy calendars. and don't scrimp on the price of the priceless, after all it's been many years in the making.
if you put serial #s on them can i have #2 ?
hope i got all this right and it's not just heady ideas i got from my garden !

61OT

XB, wow, that's just perfect. beautiful complete 'package'.
the 61OT is one of my favorite patterns. i have 4, but no boxes. actually one is a Schrade Walden 861 with jigged Delrin, and one is a Herman Williams special.
i think this Slim Premium Stock knife ( '76-'90) was not a big seller like the 34OT or 8OT or 897UH, but i think it is more attractive, not bulky, comfortable in hand and very capable.

Thanks Roland, I really enjoy carrying that knife. This has got to be one of the best places to hang out. You guys are real professionals here. You all have some of the most beautiful knives I have ever seen. I am just a beginner and still learning but this is the best place to learn. Thanks for all the help over the past few years. Maybe someday I can score one of those great little beauties.

Some awesome pics XBXB and Charlie. This one won't make the calendar, but it was a nice night to take a picture.

Early 61OT, Schrade Walden 861, and an 61OT from Richard Langston. I had Muskrat Man put on the smooth elk scales. I want to get it pinned and have the shield put back on some day. Roland you are right about the 61OT. I don't think a lot of the retailers carried it for some reason.

Most definitely a great pattern.
