What's your latest Schrade? END DATE 8/12

Larry is absolutely correct in his dates, to my knowledge, which is also based on Michael's research. Another landmark of this era is the arrival on the knife market of the first Delrin handles in 1960.

That "patpend" mark indicates a knife produced before the patent (Design patent) issued. Yes, it was first called "Hunter". The name "DeerSlayer" came later. That is a pretty high serial for a pre patent issue 15OT knife from what I have seen.

Baer applied for the design patent on this pattern on August 7th, 1964 and it issued on November 9th of 1965. Records show that 5,346 of the Schrade Walden knives, and 836 of the Sears #10600 were shipped in 1964, before the patent issued. 6,244 of the SW shipped in 1965 along with 2,552 of the #10600 Sears knives. Of this 1965 shipment it is unknown how many bore the “PAT. PEND” etch. It is very possible that there was a large quantity of WIP and finished knives still in the pipeline at the end of 1965, still to be finished or shipped thru 1966.

Also I note that it does not have one of the first design sheaths (yours is a much better second design). If we only knew some more production details, we might be able to pin down the production date even more closely. Alas, what we have so far is far beyond the info that the factory retained (to my knowledge).

And yes, the 15OT was the first Old Timer... fixed blade! Uncle Henry held the patent on it... shoulda had his signature on it from the get-go, IMHO!

Michael

Michael, cheers and best wishes for a fine and prosperous 2010 !
thanks for going over the early 15OT history again. it is a fun pattern to collect because the info you have put together allows us to date them to a fairly narrow time period. and the search for a "PatPend" is fun too because they do show up fairly regularly on ebay, often not noted by seller as PP, but there for the collector to spot.

Here's a little more pertinent 15OT patent info:

Thanks for clearing up those dates Larry and Michael, I'm presently at a loss here regarding finding anything I've "filed" away!

Eric

Oh yes! And here's the cover "letters", seems they took a nice journey from NYC to Providence and then to Ellenville over their lifetime!:D

In the brochure that came with the 15OT shown on the previous page with the Pat Pend. marks the address for the plant is listed with a zip code. As in Schrade Walden Cutlery Ellenville, N.Y. 12428.

Anyone recall when zip codes began?

A Schrade by any other name is still a Schrade, and lots of fun to find.

Nice 55's Roland, You got to love them. I had not seen the Olsen knives Schrade until lately.

I have Keen Kutters, Imperial Diamond Edge, and Craftsman with that same peachseed delrin scale (kind of a buckskin look) , some in a jack blade configuration.

Hal,
What is that black one there on the left with the oval shield. That one is very sharp looking.

Well, this is not a Schrade, but is Schrade inspired.

This is a 5-1/8" Firestorm Damascus blank made by Grand Leavitt of Idaho.
The steel is 1095 & 15N20 with a Rockwell hardness of 56-57 on the C scale.

I put mammoth fossil ivory on the handles with mosaic pins.
I like it. I think I will do another full size one.

I hope you like it,
Dale

I keep going back and looking at this photo Hal. Something about that top knife's clip. it's wonderful.

What a beautiful variety in this collection. When my wife asks why I keep buying these knives i just say it's an investment. Besides, I would like to hand something of quality down to my boys when they are older and can appreciate such craftsmanship. Thanks for posting.

Dale, that is awesome!:thumbup::thumbup:
