Maybe that is the merschaum bone? So does that cracked ice count as "Mother Of Toilet Seat?" Still trying to get my arms around the difference between MOP and MOTS, so please don't think I'm making a digg on your knife. I picked that up in another thread so I hope that is what MOTS really stands for. I like it a lot! Hoping not to offend. . .

Chuck

None taken Chuck, in the least. It's confusing identification sometimes. Mine is an imitation pearl (I think). It looks alot better than what my picture shows. Schrade Walden called some of this material Marine Pearl. Schrade used some, and so did Western Cutlery, that looks more like pearl than other cracked ice. Larry, do you know what the Schrade "Marine Pearl" material is? Is it man made or is it a mollusk shell material?

The true cracked ice celluloid is what is affectionately called MOTS. It was used on guitars, tabletops, and yes toilet seats. Kind of a 50's thing. Not sure who coined the MOTS phrase.

The pure white one, I have not the slightest idea what it is. Some kind of plastic.

Here's what I just got in the mail today. I'm very happy to say it's much better than I anticipated it would be. I got the set, but the knife that came with it dosen't match the Axe for that year.:grumpy:

Nice! Wannacollect. May I ask what is the handle material on the Schrade Walden Gentleman knife?
I have both the Schrade Walden and Imperial Knife/Axe sets. From my 1970 S/Walden catalog I believe your axe set is X48S and came with the 148-S. What knife did you receive with your set? Hoo Roo.

.......Wannacollect..the original knife for your X48S axe set is pictured in my post# 1077,page 54, of this same thread, first photo knife on left of photo.148S. Hope this helps. Hoo Roo

Hi Wannacollect,

Excellent find!!

2 cents worth ..

From what I've been able to find in the catalogs and price lists on collectors-schrades-r-us it looks like there are 2 options for a match

X47S '65 to '69 with 147S
X48S '70 & '71 with 148S

Anyone, please comment - I can't readily see the difference with the hatchet in the different years. Looks like it matches '65-'71

Again CONGRATS on a great find!

Larry come to find out, the knife that came with my Axe set is the model #148, but it's not a model #148S. Doe's the "S" stand for "Staglon"? The handle material on my knife is leather, (spacers/washers) that are compressed together. That is also why I didn't think it was a match to the Axe.
I assume the handle material is nickel/silver on the "Craftsman" gents knife. I saw one like it just sell recently on flea bay. It was older though, it was a Sch. Cut. Co. model.

My 84 year old Neighbor just gave me a Schrade Walden 165 uh that he used for deer hunting very well built knife with sheath & stone. No paperwork or box but it`s a first run knife i do believe. serial number is 00685 how many of these were made in first production? It`s not in perfect condition but it`s it cleaned up and sharpened up like a razor on my tormek sharpener & stropping wheel. brass needs polished but it`s a keeper for sure.
