how do you tell what is an old one? any clues on the appearance? i use a v shaped system for doing my knives and yes i can shave the hair from my arms also (wife hates this) but it does not have an attachment or device for serrated.

Edit:
I don't want to give the impression that I am endorsing the new Lansky Knife sharpeners. They are worthless junk!
If you want to go with a Lansky, (it's a good system), then search for an old one that uses the stones that Lansky built their reputation on years ago. I have sharpened everything from small pen blades to a rigging axe, (just to prove I could), with the old Lansky. After buying a new one with the new type stones, I couldn't sharpen one LB7 before the stones just quit sharpening, like they were worn out. I threw it in the trash and found a good used old Lansky and I'm back to shaving the hair off my arms with the knives I sharpen with it. I bought another new Lansky at one point and the angle guide clamp refused to hold the knife securely. I returned that one to the store and got my money back.[/QUOTE]

Rule of thumb, don't buy one with a red box or a red knob on the clamp. They are the junk ones. Black box only. Make sure that the fine grit stone is pink, smooth ceramic-like materal. New ones are not the same. That's the most important and best way to get the right one. Pink ceramic fine grit stone. Three stone sets only unless someone added an extra coarse stone to the kit which has a black handle on the stone. And then there is the serrated knife stone pictured below. I have no experience with new serrated knife stones and don't know if they too differ from the one I bought 25 years ago. They come in different grits also. A couple of other outfits make similar systems, like Gatco and another that I can't remember. No experience with them. Since you have a sharpener that you like, the most simple and inexpensive thing to do is to look at the small tapered sharpening sticks. If I buy another serrated blade knife to use, I would try one of those. Taylor/Schrade is marketing one. But I kinda don't like Taylor Brands. After creating an even bevel on both sides of the blade with the Lansky and until the blade gets really dull, I just use an EZE Lap, EZ-M diamond dust impregnated stick, that stores in the brass handle, to touch up blades that don't need a major overhaul.

I forgot, EZE Lap is a maker of a tapered stick that is for serrated blades.

Really purdy and purdy rare! I saw that one or one like it and a couple of others recently with that Ruger emblem on the handles. Kind of a different and nice idea!

So you got that Ulster Cattle knife Saddlebum. I think that is a really nice example for a dandy price. I tried to undercut your bid, but no bargain for me today!

For some reason I'm really diggin this knife. Probably because I had so many chances to buy one when they were new but never did. :(
Yours looks new too.

You rascal! I got it for just a couple of dollars less than my max bid, so it was close. I thought this one was a neat equal end because of the heavily swedged blades. Kinda different, for me anyway.

Me too. They have been catching my eye alot lately for some reason, but I didn't think about getting one until last night. I couldn't sleep so I was 'counting knives' on ebay instead of sheep. (not really a good idea) Real early this morning I stumbled on this one. Not only a white Craftsman 95045 'Bowie Stock Knife' but a 50th Anniversary, model number 95044. That and the reasonable BIN price and 2 people watching it was too much temptation for a sleepy Schrade nut.

I turned 16 in '77 and bought one of these exact knives from our local Sears store with my birthday money! I always thought it was the coolest with all the Caftsman logos since 1927, and because my dad was born in 1927, too. I carried it up into the Air Force, where I eventually broke the tip off the clip blade (abusing it in some improper way). Sears replaced it with no questions asked (Good old Craftsman!), but the new one wasn't the special anniversary edition, just a standard white delrin 4" stockman. Lost it years later.

Have always wanted another one like the original. It was my first real knife I bought new, and still one of the best I've ever owned.

Thanks for refreshing a good memory for me!

Cool story. Keep an eye on ebay, I've been seeing the white 4" stockmans quite a bit there lately. Has anyone else noticed that particular types of knives seem to show up in clusters on ebay? I don't know how many times I have bought one that I had been wanting and right afterwards 4 or 5 more show up to choose from. Before that, they couldn't be found. Then after the cluster happens, they disappear again or thin out to nothing but roached-out examples. ANYWAY, I got caught up in the whole Schrade, Craftsman anniversary thing and just scored this hat pin to go with my new knife. Don't know if your interested, but there are a bunch of 5 pin sets with the different logos on our favorite shopping site right now.

To emphasize my 'cluster' theory, this one just went bye-bye on ebay about week ago.

As long as I'm here, guess I'll post this one too. I 'stole' this one last night. I think I can clean that blade up some without losing the etch. We'll see. I couldn't find an Ulster number for this one at schrades r us. Anyone know?

Ulster USA, Round shield, 3 3/4", "stag" handle, five-blade deluxe, no belt shackle, BSA #1046, circa 1976-1979. (from page 21, OFFICIAL SCOUT BLADES, by Ed Holbrook, 2009. And from page 30, 600 SCOUT KNIVES, by Joseph Richard Kerr, 1977).

Thank you, sir! Not as old a pattern as I thought it might be, but I like it! :D

how does one ascertain if the craftsman knife was made by Schrade. is it the three pins and size of them. i have noticed that Camillus the front pin is smaller? any other clues or cateloge?
