What's your threshold for "too expensive?"

Dear god, some people take knives a bit too far. $50 is a lot for a knife, and I won't touch or even so much as look at anything over about $70. I don't think you should pay more for a knife than a trip to the grocery store, or a car payment (insurance and installments). Unless you use said knife to rob somebody for money for the groceries or car payment. That way it is an investment.

If that is your personal view on knife spending I totally respect that but your post seems to indicate that the collective "we" should not spend more than "X" amount of dollars on a knife. Seems a bit judgmental to me, but, so be it.

Ankerson is spot on if you ask me. So far my most expensive was a Busse, but really my Edge Pro was about even with it and it gets a lot of use. I have spent $275ish on a couple and $300 of so on a few others but all were either worth it or a complete impulse buy that I ended up breaking even on in the end. I have found that $100 is a good number to look for quality blades especially looking at production knives. Customs are another story all together. And when you start looking at Reeves and Strider then throw the $100 out the window.

Putting a "hard limit" on anything just means you're giving yourself a goal to eventually break (i.e., Federal Government Budget). Using common sense and saying that you're not going to spend more than you can afford is the most realistic way of putting a cap on yourself because that takes into account future expendable cash and differing knife wants. And by the way, I want to know where you can buy groceries or make car payments, including insurance, for under $100 , I'd move there in a heartbeat!

a trip to the grocery store for me runs around 250-300. My wife's car payment plus insurance run around 600 a month

While presented quite harshly, it might be a decent starting point for a rule of thumb. The guy paying a note on a Bentley has different habits and lifestyle than the guy paying a note on a Hyundai. Perhaps the guy eating Kraft Dinner might not want to buy the same customs as the guy eating beluga caviar.

Just spending within your means seems to be a good idea.

Mine is a $530 for an inlayed Sebenza. Ton of money but I will use it and can recoup most of my money if decide to sell. Beside that I usually don't spend more than $150.

Shut the @%$# up Donny.
You said it man!!!!

Trent does not do thresholds!!!!:D:eek::cool:

First post! Every knife I have I use for one thing or another and so far out of the 60+ or so I own or have owned I've never spent more than 100 on. The most valuable one I have though is a B.A.S. (Big Ass Sword) my so-in-law had made in 'stan.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

I used an $800 Busse. I sold it, and someone else is now using an $800 Busse.
If you count value and not what I paid, I have a Busse SHBM I still use. It would probably bring $800 to $1000.

I don't think i really have a threshold for how expensive something is. if i need to do something, and a 20 dollar tool does it fine, but a 50 dollar tool does it better, then i may go for either one depending on whether the cheaper one fits my needs enough so that the expensive one is no longer necessary. as far as knives go, I have basically forgotten how much my knives cost. i will use them regardless of cost. it all depends on where they fit. most of my knives have been under 75, with one at 85, but i was seriously considering buying an ZT 0560. If i like it, then i will buy it. however, when i looked at the cost and realized that that was the equivalent of enough knifemaking supplies to keep me going for a long time, i reconsidered. i did not like it as much as i liked the knifemaking supplies.

So far it's been 400 dollars. I have not bought a Hinderer although I would like to. I'm not willing to pay secondary market prices. I even turned down one priced at 550.00 on another forum. Maybe one day supply will over take demand and one of the dealers will have one in stock for more than 15 minutes.

The most I have spent on a single knife is a little less than $600. Having said that, I don't have a limit. If I want it and I can afford it I'll buy it. Simple.

The most I've paid was $900 for a custom swing guard stiletto by Burn. Currently, the Demko that's in my pocket is the most $ that I own. I'm waiting on a DDR custom 4" Maxx that Darrel says to expect in 2 months. Then the Reese Weiland one off MT Hawk auto due sometime at $1200.

Wanna get expensive? Try collecting watches. I only own 1 watch and at $6400, it better last all my life and my grandkids!

Don't judge other people by your limitations. If you do judge people, it should be by their abilities.

Hopefully, you will find your own spending habits and abilities increasing over time.

Most expensive is my favorite all-time knife, my Mayo dr. death jr. @ $815. Although I have thousands tied up in my collection. If I want it, can afford it, I get it, be darned the cost. Life is short, my lady friend has cancer at 56 years old. That has told me you better enjoy life cause it can change in a heartbeat.

Thanks! I've been using and abusing knives for years and don't have a problem with spending any amount on a knife I want. My problem is that every knife I'd like to have costs more than I have to spend. :o

My most expensive one is Horton Camp 2 at 600Pop. With the currency exchange between my country and US that's probably an average salary of a new engineer.
So do i regret? I read like a bookworm and ask around before i lay that hard-earned cash. S7 is one of the toughest steels and i know for sure unless i have the strength of Gorillas the blade's gonna outlast me. I could only justify such purchase if i used it hard enough. Safe queen to me is like having Shell Cordovan leather stored in low humid room and cracked.

I just used a RMJ Kestrel and very happy with it. I would say my mark's probably 600 for a custom.

Use it and enjoy it. There will be more exciting steels, constructions and talents out there!

I started in the same boat as many. I wouldn't spend more than $75 on a knife, then it went to $100, then $200... Right now, I wont spend more than $1000 on any knife unless I'm getting a killer deal.

for me, it is any time when the amount of my discretionary funds is less than what is wanted.
