Wheeler's Steel- The Adventure Continues!

don't get down on yourself Mark, I totally know where you're coming from. No problem buddy!
You should see what kind of things I do to my mountain bike, and in dollars it's worth far more than this knife.

Actually Mark I think you have a good point too. I have to say though the thought that Lorien might build a trail and take some pics...well once completed and assuming there are no mishaps...That would make the knife worth a lot more to me than just a shelf beauty as it becomes a proven tool for its task. Lorien I know from our discussions what kind of bush you can get into there. Personally I would not take this to bramble-hell for a test. But I would be inclinde to give it a good run. I almost never take a rock and on those times when it happens it is generally when I am tired. I guess my point is a good test is totally possible with fairly minimal risk for damage. Go bust some brush!!

Best,
Eric

Rant time..

I mean yeah it hurts a little to think about the finish being "ruined" but I mean hes not gonna sell this knife. And I find that carrying a $1900 Don Hanson folder and USING it gives me greater satisfaction then just having knives sitting away ever did. I mean I wouldn't have done so if it was my only DH3 folder, but since I have about 18 nice custom knives I figure its ok to sacrifice one.. if thats what you wanna call it.

But on the other hand... man it might kill me if it were me using that Wheeler knife.. haha :)

BTW its beautiful as I have said before but the new picture shows it off better.

I could sit here and tell you not to use every nice knife you post, but maybe I should give you a break and let you use it for what you intended. Alot of knives just come out so shiney looking in the end and its tough. And afterall using a knife to chop is such a powerful feeling.

I would love to carry the knife in my avatar, but unfortunately the only thing it would be good at is killing. :/

I'm glad this conversation has come up again, good points all around. Further opinions are certainly welcome here, even if contrary to the spirit of the thread- in fact, they are extra encouraged.

The knife in my avatar, made by Magnus Axelson, is the only knife in my quiver which I will not use. The last time this debate occurred, it was in a thread regarding that knife. I was defensive and allowed my emotions get the better of me, said a few words I wish I hadn't said kind of thing. I realize now it's because I was annoyed that I was wrong headed with my expectations of that particular knife, and didn't want to hear it. But this time's different and please feel free to say what you want.

Who would buy a Lambo and not drive it? Yes it's beautiful. Yes it's expensive. A Honda civis can get you from point a to b.

My godfather used this quote referencing hangar queen aircraft, "It's like being married to Raquel Welch and not (ummmm having relations) her."

BEAT THAT BABY!

Cut, slash, chop, hack, slice, stab, scrape and lop with it! It can handle it! I know for a fact that Nick has state of the art, digitally controlled heat treating equipment. That thing was born to clear trail. Don't cut short it's destiny in infancy! Make it a legend!

Contrary to popular belief, that beautiful damascus is the superior steel for a field knife. It performs with the best of them, and it is 10 times easier to keep it looking great with minimal refinishing.

Besides, if nobody ever wrecked a nice knife, we might not get to make anymore.

Adam-

Cars, motorcycles, watches, knives, and as Lorien can attest, bicycles all come in deluxe versions. Buy what you, spend as much as you want, use what you want. Everyone should know their limits in the process.

I love the whole process that went into this knife and the key for me, if it were mine, would be use it, but don't abuse it. Nick can buff that baby up in no time, any time. If the going gets tough, you are not having a contest. Bring out that less expensive brushbeater and tear it up!

I say its made to use so use it just dont abuse it. Dont let its good looks stop you from enjoying the high performance of a well made custom knife made especially for you.

You can always send it back and have it re-polished I suppose, more power to you if that's what you bought it for.

Braver man then me though - I'd just buy a "beater" knife for beatin' on and enjoy the knife as theart it clearly is. It's rather like driving a Dusenberg to shool in the snow to pick up your kids. Sure it works, but geez there are better tools for the job :p.

IS there a better hand tool for the job? It's why Lorien ordered it from Nick, to make the nicest looking brush killer he could swing......

Thanks for the kind words folks :) As for using it... well, if it were me I'd keep this one all shiny and stuff and take one with a belt finish and micarta handle (or at least a wood one that isn't gem grade Koa ;) ) out in the woods, but I am just the hack who made it... I don't own it anymore so it's not my call :)

The core of any good knife is its purpose and ability to fulfill whatever that purpose is... and whether I make one all shiny or not, it needs to hold true to that.

It's just easier for me to walk out through the cow shit in the field wearing Carhartt's, boots, and a T-shirt than it is wearing a Brioni suit with Armani shoes. ;)

hmmm...isn't that what I asked for?

Dude, it's 100% your fault this knife is so nice. All I wanted was something simple, that looked like that plywood cutout I sent you, but OH NO, someone had to go all out, didn't he?

What were those emails again? "hey Lorien, what do you think of some little spacers behind the guard", then "well hey Lorien, I was thinking maybe we'd use some nice wood for the handle", then "hey guess what Lorien? I'm making it out of damascus". This was really all your idea, that you're putting this piece of Art into the hands of a self professed hack was your call.
:D

Don't worry buddy, she's in good hands.

This knife isnt all that fancy guys. Its just random damascus and a wooden handle. Granted its done very well but it doesnt have all the bells and whisltes that the high priced knives have like mosaics, take downs, ivory, bluing, engraving, know what I'm saying? Just use it and enjoy it. To abuse it though would result in a good lashing from us all.

Better be? If you find that you don't like it Lorien just send it on over to me.....:D

Enjoy the knife. -

ahhhh...I never tire of that sweet Coop pic.

Great points on all sides... I'm more in the "USE IT" category myself. :) When do we get to see the great leather that (I'm assuming) is being made to compliment this bad boy?
