When it's not exactly Made in the USA - Hoback

He probably won’t set up a table because it’s apparent at least here that people will likely make it their mission to go tell him how they feel, phones out, recording the whole thing for the insta, etc. He’s prob thinking it’s best he lays low for a while.

Considering (based on his sudden silence and removal of all posts regarding this) that he is likely now aware that he faces possible civil liability if any of those 28 dealers that they were misled and have lost sales as a result, he would be well to shut his mouth and lay low for a while lest he say something more incriminating than what he’s already admitted to.

I'll bet right now, based off of his reaction of deleting everything, he doesn't have a table there this year. He can't handle the heat and is ducking off right now, no way he'll handle direct to his face criticism or questions about this. If he does, I'll be surprised. He had an opportunity to take this on the chin and atone for this. Own it. Don't delete anything, be clear and honest about everything. Apologize and make it right, don't blame anyone else. If it were an honest mistake, that would be the line of action I would take. This cover up mode is a tell tale sign of this not being an honest mistake. Which we already know because he told us he was afraid of the "blowback" so he stayed silent and kept selling China made as American.
Yup. Hard to believe he would be able to stand the completely justifiable heat from this truly epic fail of a situation he created, with such an appearance. All the dealers he blamed would be there too.

Agreed. Opening his mouth and saying words is not a strength of his. Should probably just shut up and lay low.

Something tells me that if Whitty is there, the "discussion" will be quite entertaining if nothing else, and I absolutely flat out can't blame the guy.

Actually, he's probably had his phone blowing up since like 6AM from dealers enquiring about when they can expect their funds returned after he's received the shipments of his Chinese knives back, or in some cases, all of the knives he's sent them, back. Turns out that wrapping yourself in the Good Book isn't going to shield you from the ire of people who don't like how you misled them, and made bank off of it. Totally odd, that.

Hell, if even if none of the dealers say anything, think about how far and wide that "origin chart" has spread by now, and all the people who are mad because they thought they'd paid out for an American made knife, only to discover it's a Guangdong Special. I've seen at least ten different people who are fuming mad that their Sumos are Chinese made. 🤣

It would just be a distraction and accomplish nothing. Most people don’t want to hear someone screaming at someone and making a scene… some do, but most don’t. Hoback showing up at Blade would be like running into the guy that cheated on your little sister: A scene will be made, people will be annoyed, and in the end all it does is make the person yelling feel better.

We both know the knife community is smaller than it appears. Word travels. He really screwed up by blaming the dealers. I mean, he screwed up by not labeling his knives as made in China and failing to notify the dealers that USA made did not apply to the Chinese knives as well, but making bad blood with 28 dealers is a terrible decision if you want to keep selling knives.

I mean, the same fing models, neither Chinese or USA versions labeled. Can't make it up.

He would deservedly catch hell if he showed up at blade, and it would be glorious to see. It would also serve as an excellent warning to anyone thinking of playing the same shenanigans!

Agreed. No one will convince me this was all a big misunderstanding. To many things add up to the exact opposite.

Yup, and for whatever reason (doesn't matter), "Made in the USA" really matters to a lot of people in the knife community.
If I understand that and I've only been on the blade forums for a couple years, surely Jake Hoback knows that.

Nothing should be left to interpretation or otherwise be ambiguous.

The fact that he admitted that he did nothing "after awhile" because he was afraid of being labeled a liar (because he's a liar and knew this would crater his sales), tells everyone who's seen his vapid "apology/blame-game" video everything they need to know.

I'm curious, when he signed up with all these dealers, even if we disregard his video update from 3 months ago where he says he got that horizontal machine, and go with he's had 2 machines this entire time, it's impossible to make enough knives to stock 28 dealers. He'd had to have had Chinese production coming in, and all those knives, not one.... not a single knife was labeled made in China? All the dealers who stocked these knives never saw a made in China label while opening boxes, stocking them, putting them on shelves, opening a knife up to display or check out?

If in order to clear customs they had to have the labels when they got here, where did they go by the time they reached the dealers? And customs and border patrol kept missing that these knives were not labeled, for years? 😑

I think there is only 2 people who believe that.

I’m not well-versed in Hoback’s complete history but I wonder if that 1 dealer(rumor spreader 😉)signed up when he was making everything in the US. If they did when he was USA only, I think it would’ve been a big issue for them to question the COO of a new product. Imagine a dealer telling a previously trusted US maker, “these look Chinese made.” I don’t think that would go over well and would cause trust issues. Certain Chinese companies do make amazing knives so I guess it could be flattering.

He knew that being labeled USA made allowed him to charge a premium. No maker I can think of took a hit when they announced they were having reate/we/bestech make their new knives because they can’t keep up. They adjusted their prices to represent the change and clearly market them as Chinese made. All of them still sell like hotcakes. Jake Hoback’s reputation is toast. At this point it may be smart of him to go back to building rock crawlers or crawl under a rock.

His website did say that every knife was QC'd and shipped from their shop in Idaho. Maybe part of Hoback's style of QC is removing "Made in China" stickers.

Lucky/amazing that none slipped through, if that is the case.

Obviously we are just speculating here, but if he was removing the made in China stickers, I'd think he'd pay EXTRA attention to make sure he didn't miss one. Knowing full well as he admitted that "blowback" would be fierce.

While speculation, it does make sense why no dealer ever caught on to made in china.

That qc’ing line is what turned me off of his knives and made me suspicious months ago.

I’d imagine the original boxes had the “made in China” stickers adhered. Hence the reason for the custom wood boxes, made by the blind or Amish. I’d say he tacks on $200 for the boxes alone.
