When the SHTF - Camps

I think it depends upon the nature of the crisis.

I would stay put if I could do so in relative safety (no radiation cloud, no poison gas, no marauding enemy troops, no brain eating zombies, etc...).
I would have the home court advantage so to speak.
But I would not barricade myself in my home and hoard what I had.
I would help those around me as best I could.

If I had to bug out, then I would try to take the quickest method that would get me the farthest from the crisis....which would probably mean boat, bicycle, or horse.
I guess I would use my coin collection, knife collection, watch collection, and our meager jewelry collection to barter with once we got somewhere safe.
But I would keep my pistols.;)

I like Hollowdweller's thoughts, because he is not assuming he'll already be at home.
You have to plan for all the contingencies. Kids are at school(s). Spouses are at work, roads are blocked to heck, it's cold and raining....you get the picture.

If I (and the family) are at home, I'm in 1000% better position from the get go. but it would be foolish to plan for that kind of good fortune.

Depending on the severity of the situation, those in charge (picture unsupervised 23 yr. old Nat. Guard MPs) WILL, in some cases search and pillage your stuff. When it gets bad, it's everyone for themselves. They will take your kinves, your firearm, and your last snicker's bar. RunningBoar won't, but, as things deteriorate, those instances will become more and more commonplace. This a reason to avoid roadblocks.

Gov Camps, well we all agree they will be places of despair, thievery, germs ,etc.
Look at the SuperDome situation...need I say more? HOWEVER......
What if you or a lvoed one needs medical attention, not a scratch, but needs some real professional help? Well, as much as you'd hate to do it, you may have to go to a camp to find a Doc.

Just like Wilderness Survival, always plan for the worst. Plan for not having all of your supplies, plan for being away from home and having to fight your way there, crossing creeks, cutting through bad areas, in the cold rain.
Just like a Wilderness Survival situation, stop, take stock of your situation, and make a Plan A, B and C.

As Hollowdweller pointed out, your first priority (getting home) just may take 2 days.
The dissaster strikes at 1pm, Hollowdweller leaves work, heading toward home.
he has to stop and shelter overnight, (whether it be in the woods, or under a bridge) he wakes as the sun rises and continues his trek, gets home by sunset the following day.

Those are the kind of variables one has to think about.
