Lets say you are going to be in the woods for two weeks to test your skills. If you could only take one knife and it had to be a folder which knife would you take.If the knife is not a well known knife or maker please post pics and makers contact info. if you have it.

I was looking at the SOG FatCat but I think I could do better for the price.

I take it you don't mean multitools and sak's. If so then I'd take my spyderco military.

I kind of think of it as an updated buck 110. About the same length and size only with better materials and one handed operation.

+1 except to say I would demand the CPM-M4 model because I really have no love for S30V.

If you limit the question to Non-sprint run productions, I would necessarily change my answer to the Spyderco Gayle Bradley. It is very solid in hand and resists flexing like a fixed blade, and while it is hollow ground, it is very thin behind the edge so it still outperforms many FFGs I have tried...and the M4 will hold the edge long enough to be making the finest shavings even after LOTS of use.

I have used the Gayle Bradley for all sorts of woods tasks and the only complaint I have is the sharp edges on the handle (ergonomics)...which I have since fixed on mine.

Excluding my SAK Outrider, that is the answer: I know the old EKA Big Swede is outstanding for that, so that. If I had to pick something new the Kershaw Rake, clip dumped and modified scales.

Never been gone for 2 weeks, but when I take a woods folder as the main blade, I grab my Strider SmF.:)
If you break it, you're doing it wrong.;)

How about an Opinel No. 9 or 10? Good sized blade, simple, sturdy construction, great blade geometry and ergos.

For the tactical lovers, the overbuilt Cold Steel Recon 1 folders might be a good choice. I've seen it withstand a lot of abuse on YouTube vids. But the handle design would not be good for multiple grips, which I think would be an impediment for certain bushcraft tasks.

Or perhaps you'd like something really beefy:

Anything goes. It will be interesting to see what you all would use. I tend to think one big single blade folder that I could use as a defensive weapon also but like Les Stroud some will like a multitool or a SAK.

One of the guys I work with has a Recon 1. That is on my list as a possible choice.

I usually always take my Swisschamp with me when I go camping along with a fixed blade and a midsize to a big folder such as a Millie or ZT 0551

I think unless you specifiy a single blade folder, most would wisely choose a locking bladed SAK. My top pick would also be the Outrider, but a Rucksack is a close second and more thin as a backup. The awl and saw blades would be worth their weight in gold. The other option would be a multitool...offering some of the same tools; my choice would most likely be a Swiss Spirit multitool as that's been my go-to for quite some time.

If kept to just a single bladed folder, I would probably go with my Emerson CQC10 (or A100 as a close second). I do have some "mega" folders that would be good choices as a single knife. Some can actually chop pretty decently...

TOPS Magnum 747
Benchmade Rukus
Cold Steel Raja 1
Lone Wolf Knives - Harsey Range T3
Original Al Mar SERE

All are pretty substantial folders (especially that Raja 1!!!) and can actually do light chopping if needed.

I don't like folders for in the woods, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Cold Steel Spartan.

+ very good lock
+ good shape. (multifunctional)
- might be a little hard to sharpen in the woods, because of the shape.

If I had to pick just one knife, and a folder at that. I would also choose the SAK Outrider.

I think one of the ZT 550 or 300,350 series would work well. Also Cold Steel Recon 1 or American Lawman. I also think a Kabar Bob Dozier PHAT would work well. If you can find a Benchmade Mini Rukus it would do well along with a Spyderco Manix series. I think all of these would do a good job without spending a great big amount of cash and a chance of losing it. GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D

SAK Trekker, One-Hand Trekker or Outrider or any other type in this 111mm frame so long as it has a saw, tweezers and pick.

Well just because no one has mentioned it i think the benchmade dejavoo large uncoated would be tough to beat, but that being said im sure i could find a custom maker to make something a fair sight better.

I know gerber is not the favorite brand around here, but my geber Gator folder would be my choice. i love my spyderco's and cold steel's but my gator seem's to "bite" more in wood and is excellent at carving trigger traps. i have been edcing the gerber BG scout and so far i really like it, it's kind of a updated gator with a really nice low riding clip. it would be my second choice.

I`m probably a little biased, but I`ve been beating the daylights out of the bottom one in the top photo for a couple of weeks, and it`s holding up fine.
