which Golok?

As cool as the Barkie looks I have to agree with Joe that I'd rather see it with some kind of point. Can't think of a real advantage to not having one, at least not for the things I do. :)

I ground a point on one of mine. Wicked thing.

Probably cause people don't have one! You want to let me try it out :) I'll give it back I promise!

Now that is cool

I prefer a point as well. However, I always thought the idea behind the pointless BRKT golok was to make it a more efficient chopper than a pointed blade of the same length?

"But I did see one chip at PWYP."

Saw that pic a couple of weeks back. 'Till there's a pattern I've got that pegged as rogue, but still...

Agreed. It is had to balance the edge grind with the HT.

It did lose some of its chopping efficiency, but still chopped pretty well. The non-pointed one does better.

Oh HD, I wasn't bashing your mod; I think it's absolutely great, and I don't doubt that it performs well  I was just ruminating on why the design didn't have a point in the first place.

If they just added an inch and a half to the end of the design to accommodate a point it'd be just as good at chopping, but a little more versatile. :)

I had a BRK golok, then I got a Farmer Dangerous Curves...I ended up selling the BRK. The DC just has more utility in my experience and suits the work I do better. The weight and balance also helps elbow and wrist fatigue.

I used it this weekend clearing up some storm damage, as well as keeping the burdock and other weed under control.

I don't think you could go wrong with either one. They are great tools...don't bother with the chainsaw for the small tasks, grab the golok.

I do think the blunt tip is very handy for small digging chores. Like digging a cathole when out roughing it, of uprooting saplings, fire poker etc.

Why would you do that when you can use a stick for any of those applications though?

Because the traditional golok type that Mike was making doesn't have or need a point. It's a pure chopper. Here is a traditional golok of the same type and pattern in traditional materials from Valiant. There are many variations on goloks.

I would take the Condor model. I don't think the extra cost of the BRKT makes it that much better. Of course, I would still LOVE to own one, as the one I have held felt great.

Never handled a Farmer :(

If a large machete/chopper were going to be my only knife, I'd want a point. Since it isn't my only knife, the point isn't of much concern.

Cause I got a golok in my hand...not a stick.;)

Seriously, earlier this spring I was digging up saplings and I wanted to leave the roots intact, with the intent of making staffs and cudgels. A stick would not have been up to the task or digging about the root ball. Sure, other tools might have worked, but I took the golok and not the whole tool shed.

That's what I figured. Pure chopper.

I do still want one :D
