Ok, so I'm sitting here, watching TV, and opening every knife in the drawer to study how I do something (that I have been doing for over 50 years) because I never thought about it before.

What's happening to me? How did I get here? What have you people done to me?

(For the record, I hold the knife in my right hand, use the left thumbnail, and then move both hands to open. There is absolutely no reasoning or thought behind this technique.)

I’ll be sure to bring my iphone with iMovie installed on it as it was essential in helping me get up to “speed” ;) :D

your new call sign is “Hollywood”. A right thumber stuntman who uses editing to make it seem real... tsk tsk... just what I’d expect from a right thumber.

edit: I got so angry about this treachery that I forgot what thumb was the wrong one...

Amen my friend, you are so right  :)
We all need to slow down from our hectic lifestyles and enjoy the moment, live more in the present . Our traditional slipjoints knives helps us do just that !
Nothing like slowly eating an apple with your traditional carbon steel knife while leaning against the trunk of shady tree on a hot summer day with not a worry in the world !

STILL …

I have a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing that I am the fastest traditional slipjoint knife opener in the whole of Porchemberg  ( and a "right" thumper at that )

If I am so fast with our 86 2019 porch knife … can you even imagine how fast I'll be with our upcoming one ? :D

I just want to be clear that I only clicked 'like' on that post because of your special slipjoint-opening gloves, not because of your weird right-thumb opening technique.

“Hollywood”... I’ll take it  but just because your name is Dan :p:D:D:D

I am glad you got your bearings again :D

:thumbsup::D
Those are my kick scooter gloves.
I must say that they look way cooler using them on knives lol rather than the dorky look a middle age man can have on a scooter :D

:D Here is the unedited clip complete with all the parrot/children and household noise going on.
My wife was a good sport, it took us like 7 tries ... but I was determined to get it perfect to get you :D

I am specially giddy today as I finally got my covid shot :)

 :D

Good reason to carry a supplementary fixed blade ;)

:D :D
Exactly why, in my cowboy days, I carried a "modern" knife.
You guys are exactly right. When I know I’m going to be roping stuff I try to have a knife that’s easier to access. I’ll use knives with a fob/lanyard, occasionally I carry a modern one-hander, and this year I started mixing in a fixed blade. I also try to be a little more careful.

Shows up to thread on opening traditional slip joint knives.
Isn't interested in opening traditional slip point knives.

Not so, my friend in knives. I love my GEC 06, beautiful little folder and the two blades are hella handy, but not worth it. Same with my 33, where the 93 is a pleasure to use.

Much to my chagrin I acquired a truly beautiful Rusty Preston pipe knife, two blade, sculpted bolsters, the most beautiful buffalo horn handles I have ever seen. Really, really love it. Just got it two weeks ago (photo clipped from Nordic Knives where purchased from). Just not worth the displeasure in opening.

My French traditionals seem, as a rule, easier to open. Bellon, Herrero, Duran, etc. Are lovely to carry, and I have a Bellon on me at the moment (in a Paul Long sheath)

My titanium knives are jealous :DIMG_20210415_194231.jpg

I can't believe this thread was started on Monday and there are 13 pages  I'm choosing not to answer the poll because it seems I always hold the spring side down and open the blades with whichever thumb rotates it the correct way to open. Based on percentages, I use my right thumbnail more often. A muskrat knife I would open the mark side with my right and then flip it around and open the pile side with my right. A standard stockman, I would open the clip with my right, the spey with my right and then the sheepsfoot with my left. I guess the most ambidextrous friendly knife I own would be a congress. :D Although this one below is not thumb biased either... which is odd o_O I thought maybe it was special made for a southpaw ;)

your wife is a saint.

for the record, that’s still pretty quick!
No editing required.

Just found this thread... I know...late to the party, I’m that guy!:) Anyway, I open my knives wrong. ;) I hold the handle in my right hand and pinch the blade with my left of course, and then swing the handle open. I don’t own a single blade I can’t pinch open in this way. I do the same for multiple blades, I just use my left nail to start it. I hope this doesn’t ruin our friendship John!

John’s the understanding one.
I, however, will not be putting up with one of our own fraternizing with one of them...

Please Dan, don't make me make yet another video to clearly demonstrate the superiority of the "right thumpers" technique as it may convince some "left thumpers" to abandon your unyielding leadership style :D
