Who actually carries a Buck 110 daily?

I don't know if it counts but when I'm in uniform, I have always carried a 110 on my gun belt (small town Police Detective)...

Please pardon my ignorance...Except for uniformed patrolmen, my experience with police is limited...but in your town, detectives are uniformed??? I guess TV has conditioned me to believe that detectives operate undercover...or in civilian clothes, at any rate...

(I really liked Jerry Orbach) :(

My fault for a poor explanation. I wear "soft clothes" on a daily basis (I love that silly cop jargon!). I still wear a uniform for overtime on patrol, court officer, etc. That was my reference to whether it counted or not, I don't normally wear a uniform anymore but still have the 110 on the gunbelt. I actually prefer to be in uniform, I don't enjoy the pretty boy clothes as I call them! I wear an original Bucklite daily.

PS-I don't watch alot of cop shows but Orbach was good-he did a good job of portraying a salty old timer!

Quite interesting...Thanks for the insight! ;) I do see a lot of uniformed police, at the courthouse, night court, etc, but never thought that the detectives moonlighted as uniforms when allowed (or forced OT)...I'll have to pay more attention... :D

I think that it counts.

Hm, does anyone know why Buck chose to originally combine their 110s with black leather sheathes...? I'm wondering if Buck chose black leather for their 110 sheathes specifically because it would match a policeman's duty belt...?

I was with San Diego Police from 1973 through 1981 and carried a 112 on my gun belt. Only a few officers carried a 110 on their belts. I preferred the 112 because, while it had a blade with the same thickness as the 110, it was shorter and more appropriate for rescue type work. I was often in a police ambulance and used the knife to cut seat belts, cut off boots or pant legs, etc. The 112 was the closest thing to a "tactical" knife in those days. If I had to do it today, the size of the belt loop would not allow me to carry it on my gun belt. Thank goodness the older ones had a wider loop. :)

Mike,

So if you had to do it again these days would you still carry a Buck 112 or something different?

Just curious :D

Joe,
I've actually mentioned this before. The 882SBTG Police Knife that Buck offers is a great knife and it would be my knife of choice. It has a better steel, assist opening, a clip that would allow the knife to be carried in the sap pocket (a small pocket that is on standard police trousers) and a partially serrated blade. I'd keep the 112 home for personal use.

The price of progress...you just can't find a good sap these days... :(

Everybody has those newfangled telescoping batons...give me a good shot-filled leather sap any day! ;)

I used to have one that was a weight on each end and a big coil spring thru the middle...red and green leather intertwined around the spring...can't find it now, of course...

Ah, the sap. They gave me one when I started (1989). Our training in the Academy for the sap consisted of, "don't hit anyone in the head with it". I carried it for years but never did smack anyone with it. I preferred the nightstick, it was much more persuasive and you rarely had to hit anyone, the sight of it usually took care of the problem. As for the expandable baton, I can't stand them. When we first got them the one I used kept collapsing when we tried to do poking manuevers, as if pushing back a crowd. In uniform I still carry a LONG wooden nightstick-that gets some looks and comments, even from other cops. "Why do you have that thing instead of an expandable?" "Real men carry wood son." Besides, when we do our training, the sound of that stick hitting the bag stops the action!

Saps have been outlawed for years. When I first went on the force, there were cops that still had then as well as sap gloves. They still have batons made of wood or hard rubber. The sap pocket remains in the trousers and are mostly used for flashlights now (or at least they were when I was there although its been awhile!)

A Buck 110 rides in my daypack with me everyday. If I go afield, a Buck 110 goes with me.

not exactly daily, but it goes out in the woods with me whenever I go. Along with a smaller knife of some sort, usually my Case stockman or similar. Wheter it's finishing, hunting, trapping, hiking, or just skipping through the meadow sniffing flowers (HAHA!) it's with me. Just not around town.

Man, that titanium handled 110 brings back memories. They went under their own name didn't they? I used to want one of those so bad, any chance buck still offers them through the custom shop with the high grade stainless steels?
