Who all uses traditional archery?

nice kodiak mag, I may be mistake, on what model I have, mine is greenwood with a purple (blue) Stripe

I may have a kodiak may 48 , it is at home and I'm at school next time I am home I will get pics

I rescued it from a friend from 100 $, he was leaving it strung outside!!

It has unfortunately developed a slight limb twist because of this. I need to find a way to fix it

I will also get pictures of abenpearson hunter (It think) that I had a family friend give me for free

I've went with traditional archery for years, I came to despise compound bows after a shoulder injury, and an arrow-rest which was supposedly set-up properly. Don't care much for stabilizers, fancy rests, peep sights, and all that mess. Just give me a bow made of good glass, maybe some simple sights, and I'll happily plunk targets at thirty and forty yards all day long.

We've just finally gotten to a point where some south-facing hillsides are free enough of snow to get out for the first stump shooting session of the season yesterday.

My buddy Kevin who just made the leap from compound to trad:

It felt great just to get out and stretch the legs with a bow again!

I use a takedown recurve a lot when we go on camping trips becausr i can take it apart and put it in my pack nicely. Also when I'm out in the woods around my cabin just messing around going for rabbit or other small stuff, trying to improve my accuracy and maybe get some dinner. The only other thing I use my recurve for is bow fish, I find my compound is to much for walking up stream and also I don't want my Matthews getting all wet or dragged down stream lol. But I still enjoy using them and it's very rewarding taking game with it. I've never gone after turkey or deer or any bigger game with the recurve but taking a rabbit with a recurve I think can feel better then a deer with a compound from a tree stand. That's just me though, something about the compound is more primal and it's more skill then equipment.
Great thread though

Sure is nice to see all the traditional gear. My father and I have been shooting traditional for probably 15yrs. My daughter shoots a Samick Polaris in 4H competition also. I can't remember what my dad shoots, but I think it's a Bear. I currently run a Black Widow recurve 60", 65# @28". Also just ordered my first full custom handmade longbow from Voodoo Custom.

Strictly speaking, traditional recurve archery shoots off the thumb using a thumb ring (on heavier poundages).
It's far more instinctive, archers parallax works with you instead of against you, and reload times can be incredible.

I switched only recently and only "shot" a few days since, but the improvement is phenomenal once you get used to the new technique.

I have always wondered how thumbrings were used, any chance you have some decent pictures of your thumb around the string?

I've shot traditional from the bginning. My dad bought my brother and I a youth model compound bow and I just kept fiddling with it, never doing much, but when he picked up a little 35# recurve when I was about 12, we both figured out that I'm an instinct shooter. Stuck with it for a good 10 years, then quit shooting. I just recently picked up a Browning Wasp 50#@28 recurve in beautiful condition at the flea market. Its a nice bow, and a great size for hunting at only 56amo.

I also am going to build a board bow soon, I have been playing aroun with designs and dimensions, think I finally got it where I want it. Shouldn't be long before that gets going. Got enough wood for my dad to build one as well.

Some high quality stumpin' was had today! Went on a 7-mile hike back into the hunting grounds to see what sort of fresh sign might be around, and of course, to mercilessly lay waste to every stump in our path.

On the hike in:

Spring is finally coming to the high country (this is at about 7000ft):

A little lunch break:

And then it was time to get down to business:

Came across some not-too-old elk sign:

And some pretty old elk sign:

What else is there to say? It was an awesome Sunday, and good to finally stretch the legs with the Quick Styk!

That a Brittany in that pic?

Really like recurve bows, started to shoot in the 60's with my dad and his friends- bow hunters, many had short recurves- herters bows mostly at the time.

Out of practice now and seldom shoot, it is great fun and can get a lot of benefit out of the practice. It you have not tried it- and like shooting sports give traditional archery a shot. You won't regret it!

I don't like compounds if going that route rather used a rifle thats just me.

Was in Korea for a while regret not trying Korean traditional archery, its a living Asian archery tradition there- and one of the most extent.

Good traditional Asian archery site with a lot of info on many areas, use of thumb ring etc.

Mongolian archery.

I've been shooting fedora bows for years and just late last year finally bought a flagship extreme takedown in all exotic woods. I've shot and owned tons of stick owns over the years but kept coming back to the fedoras. He is local to me too which helps. I recently had a shoulder injury though which has put me out of the trad scene for good and pushed me into wheel bows for the first time, there fun but not as much as my trad gear was. My entire trad set up is now for sale : (

My father just got 1st place at the Sunshine State Games FITA Archery Tournament in the tradition class with a recurve last weekend. It was his first archery competition ever. He just started shooting a bow last xmas. Im proud of him. He must have practiced his ass off!

A pretty cool new short film from Sitka about trad bowhunting:

I also like sticks and strings. This is a English style longbow. Yew of coarse, horn knocks and inlaid ivory arrow pass. Can't remember what it pulls but feels right. It could be drawn further than I pull it for sure. It's around 6'.

Garage sale find today. Real cheap 50# Bear Grizzly. It's in good shape. Straight limbs and not all scratched up. I didn't need it but just could not walk away.
