Who carries a lighter, but doesn't smoke?

I don't smoke. I don't EDC a lighter. But I do carry a cheapo torch in the shape of a jet when I'm go hunting/fishing/etc.
I started carring one a few years ago. I had shot a deer and went looking for it. I went way back in the woods before deciding to give up and head back. By then it was very dark. After being lost for what seemed like forever, I had decided that I was going to have to spend the night out in the woods. Just by chance I did have a pack of matches in my coat pocket. So the plan was to get out of the pine thicket I was in and try to start a fire to stay warm for the night. As I got out of the thicket I could just bearly see an orange light thru the woods. I knew that was my nighbors porch light. So I was able the get out.
In those days I was never prepared for things the way I am now. No lighter or flashlight, but never again!!!! Now I carry a lighters and 2 flashlights. It's good to have a back up flashlight.
That's the great thing about BF. From you guys I have learned how to be better prepared, about things to be prepared and it's good to have a back up for some things.

Yep, carry one in my flight survival vest. Had a survival instructor way back in flight school demonstrating everything in a vest. Got done with the magnesium fire starter demo, then said "it is all well and good as a back up...but do you want to have to worry about metal shavings, etc if you just crashed in a river, in the middle of no where and in the middle of winter AND MUST get a fire started or die? (don't know if he had so many "ands", but I'm paraphrasing :D Do yourself a favor and buy a Bic each year and keep it in your vest". Going on ten years of listening to the good instructor.

Good idea about the lighter in the car also  Never had need of one in the last ten years (south to DEEP south), but will be moving on to Washington State after this tour and that sounds like a good bit of common sense.

I occasionly carry a lighter, even if I don't smoke, dont ask me why.

P.S. What's everyones favorite lighter?

I dont smoke tobacco but carry a zippo...never know, might need it (I only said i dont smoke tobacco) :p

Don't smoke but I used to, I always have a cheap butane lighter in my pocket,(never know when you need to start a fire around here), but I've always collected lighters too so sometimes I carry one for show.

I also carry a Magnesium Fire Starter on my keys,(in case the lighters don't work).

and for that occassional "...do you have a light?" encounter. :)

Last time someone asked me that, I turned on my inova x1 and handed it to him. The guy just looked at me like I was an idiot. :o

i carry something like 4 or 5 cheap roll n' light disposables (5 cents each), a zippo, and hopefully soon a delta sp-3000, and i dont smoke... i have a thing about carry to much stuff though

I always carry a large bic, and I don't smoke, but I have a lot of friends that do, so it's like common courtesy. And occasionally, I get my hands on some molta...

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but speaking of magnesium shavings, I was on cold weather training in the Italian Alps back in '88. One of our guys had a magnesium fire starter. It was well below zero at the time. I shaved some magesium onto a rock and tried to ignite the small pile with my Blazer Products micro torch. The magnesium wouldn't ignite. Must have been the cold.

I carry a Solo butane lighter as part of my EDC gear. I've never smoked, but it is often handy to have fire. I also keep a spare butane lighter in my backpack and my car emergency kit.

Me....Cheap disposable, and a metal-match(the kind you fill up with lighter fluid and strike on a flint on the side.)

I carry a lighter and I don't smoke. I carry a disposable electronic or regular flint in my pocket. My Windmill is in my shoulder bag.

I'd gladly carry a Zippo in my pocket if the damned fluid didn't evaporate all the time. The Zippos look far classier than disposables, but I can see the fluid level in the disposable and I can adjust the flame level.

How many of you non-smoking lighter carriers pony up to the smokers who don't carry their lighter?

You know, the "Gotta light?" question that plagues every party scene?

;)

I smoked for 20 years, and quit 9 years ago (definitely one of my smarter moves). Soon after quiting I was at a holiday function and someone was looking for a lighter/matches to light the holiday candles. That's when I first discovered I missed not carrying a lighter.

Later that evening we happened to stop off at a local 7-11 (I guess they're all local) ;), and while standing in line at the checkout I was looking at their collection of lighters for sale. One of the butane lighters caught my eye as it was flat and thin...one of the type that ignites from pressure rather than friction (I think they're called something like "Pizio Electric", maybe?) At $5.00 it was expensive for that type of store. I bought it and stuck it in one of the small front pockets of my "Tumi" leather shoulder bag (yes I carry a "man-bag"...have carried one for over 25 years!).

I've replaced the bag since then, the lighter is still with me. I mostly keep it in my bag as more of a "be-prepared" type thing. I think the lighter's been used no more than a dozen times (I won't go to the trouble of pulling it out if someone's just looking to light their cigarette. It's not a PC thing...I've just come to really dislike cigarette smoke). Much of the finish has worn off the lighter...but it still works fine.

What I find really amazing....I've yet to refill the darn thing!!!! :D

Lighter, pocketknife, flashlight, and signal whistle.
I can usually get through most anything with these four items, and I always have 'em on me, in one form or another.

Always a Bic in my pocket. Don't smoke. Don't light anyone's cig. Great for cutting braided nylon cord. We firemonkeys should always be prepared.
