Who else here hates pivot bearings?

Would you rather have pivot bearings or PB washers?

this is my thoughts on this topic as well.. along with every other thing people try to overcomplicate. As Danke42 said... a blade has to move 180 deg once at a time, so the thought of making something complex with more gaps and holes to gather debris or get over tightened and dimple or whatnot, seems like solving a problem that never really existed in the first place... EVERYTHING is better in it's simplest form as long as that form has been done well. In my job, i have been given some of the latest and greatest hi-tech military gadgets to solve all the worlds problems and you know what i've discovered? a $400,000 piece of laser trash never works as good as a map and compass. just my 2c

Forgive them, Rusty, for they know not what they do.

Unless of course your in one of the few places where your compass no longer points to magnetic north. In that case you will be marching with true north deviating your course in which you will soon have greater problems...

Using a folding knife for that kind of batoning when not needed is absolute abuse! Its a FOLDING knife, not a chainsaw with ripping chain and or a fixed blade, poor knife your owner knows not we he does. Silent tear just fell round the world somewhere

Like you I'm sure, I premark declination deviations on the maps before I ever leave home, otherwise NONE of it's any good.

Ever notice how many people can't find the north star?

So much for "truth"---that's cross-grain ??? :D

Well, I bashed it straight in.
Then I bashed it at upwards and downwards angles to pop out chunks of wood.
I did that all around the tree.
At non-optimal angles of approach for much of it...it took a lot of bashing fun to get it done.

Hopefully it is now "truthy" enough for you. ;)

And here's a flashback to the thread those pics and video were originally in:

Good times. :D

Doesn't anyone here cut oranges or grapefruit or something similar? I'd love to see bearings do this and then go to the beach the next day and come out fine.

Washers, man. Whoever says they gunk up the same can't have actually used their knives for much.

Having said that, bearings aren't a complete turnoff. But they're for nice show pieces. Not work knives.

I sure do but not a with a folding knife. I have dedicated kitchen knives. Considering what I cut with my edc I find it wise not to cut edibles with them.

No, it's absolute fun. ;)

Fun, something that seems to be in short supply round these interweb parts lately. :(

People seem to be taking themselves WAY too seriously.
They also take inanimate objects too seriously, and that's coming from me, a person who doesn't want anyone else to even touch my possessions.

Besides, that knife is still going strong.
Guess it didn't get the memo that it was abused...or maybe it just like the abuse. :)

I hard use all my blades i dont have any safe queens but im also from the school of thought there is a right tool for every job. If your in a pinch use what ya got but otherwise it becomes the old everything looks like a nail when you got the hammer lol

I had big fixed blades with me that day, and my brother had a two saws and a machete. :D
It was a spur of the moment idea I had just before going to sleep the night before; I figured it would do fine based on my regular use of it beforehand, and it turned out that was correct.

All other cutting that day was indeed done with tools more suited to the task. :)

Using a folder for felling a tree took more energy and time for sure...definitely not an efficient choice for that size of tree.

haha i laughed so hard when I read this^ So sad and so true. Most dont even know what declination is! Its truly amazing to me how fast poles are moving now. Off the top of my head 2 deg this last decade alone. Always wonder how much faster it could theoretically go.

Looks like it held up well.

Looks like it held up well.

It really did.
I'm pretty sure that many other stoutly built, quality folders will as well.

We live in a time where we have choices undreamt of in years gone by.
We all get sucked into brand fandom and dissing from time to time, but the truth is that there are many great choices out there now. :)

Never before have knife buyers been able to choose from so many types of steel with so many types of locks.
Many different grinds are available, and whether you want thick blade stock or thin, there's an option out there sure to please.

Soon the gov't will announce sweeping measures to halt the spread of Global Declinations. $Millions$ per year in renewable grants guaranteeing evidentiary "proof" that it's caused by humans and demanding everyone's magnets be phased out by 2025, to be replaced by shadow-sticks and organic lodestone.

Straight ahead, man......and keep your needle wet :)

I know you did. I was just woofin' ya.

Agree 110%. I'd say there are more choices now than ever. Kinda good to be alive right now and huff all those new knife pheromones, huh?

KISS is a valid concept, but I don't know if I've ever seen much evidence behind sticking to it with folding knives. Honestly, once you've introduced the aspect of the blade folding into the handle, other small mechanisms are pretty inconsequential as far as additional potential failure risks. Never seen a steel lockbar insert pop out, never heard of a bearing pivot failing in operation, etc

I know, late reply...

Just to clarify; less parts is not necessarily a "failure" issue, but more of an ease of maintenance issue from my perspective.

I have found nothing in my use, or online that would suggest bearings fail in any way that makes them an issue for folding knives.

Plastic does really well, I love my bearing flippers but this XM-24 is snappy.

How terrible is the detent on the XM-24 that just a small movement can flick the black open (not using the flipper or even touching the blade)? Honestly, kinda made me disappointed.

Its designed to be that way. Before flippers detents were not all that strong. And some makers like to be able to operate the knife with both the flipper and thumbstud. I used to be able to do the same thing with the majority of knives I owned before 2012.

So the detent is designed to be bad :p ? I can do that with my griptilian. I can see the appeal to that, just not my cup of tea haha. My ZT 0560BW has very strong (which I love) detent that I can't even shake it out, but it still deploys easy with a flipper and not thumb stud - thumb studs lol. Do you prefer weak detent even if strong detent doesn't affect deployment? Just makes me nervous haha.

I prefer the simple care of a knife with plain washers. Sure, a nice smooth opening is great but not at the expense of easy care.
