Who else uses a scythe?

Who would want to leave?

Thats the idea, making him think that he doesn't want to leave would be easier than dealing with manacles and such. I thought, maybe, the prospects of a 120 acre woodlot that he could have pretty much free range on would be tempting enough, but first I have to convince him to come in the first place. :D

Latest arrivals. A snath by a maker I'm not familiar with--I'm not sure if the "Success" label is the manufacturer or just a branding/model name. The mechanism is a knock-off of a Seymour Ironclad, which is a knockoff of the Derby & Ball swing plate. The dimensions are a hair thicker than a D&B but much thinner than standard Seymour fair. Nice vertical curvature but little horizontal, and with light delamination from bending. Very well executed nibs. Once I give it some TLC it'll make a great user snath.

The blade that came with it was a North Wayne Tool bush blade in good shape with their Monitor heel. No remnants of a label, though, so I can't tell if it's a Little Giant, Earle Special, or other line. Obviously not a Swedonian since it has a beaded web. The other blade I got at the same time. The seller I got the other items from had some other blades and snaths kicking around. Most were lost causes but this one jumped out immediately. The tang, obviously, is MASSIVE and about twice the length of the usual tang. The toe of the blade is, likewise, about twice the length of that on a usual blade. There seems to be a slight dent about where a bracing plate would press against the tang shoulder on typical mounting collars, and that raises tons of questions about what kind of snath this was meant to go on! Curious, for sure. Can't quite make out the stamp on the tang. It's small and not very distinct.

New Lilac snath, and a previous Red Maple snath with Luxor blade which tang fit the curve better.

That was fast, even by your standards! you started that snath yesterday, right?

Nice offset curves, good angles; you're becoming the next Peter Vido of the "wildwood snath" makers world, except faster at making them. :D

Yep, started that one the day before yesterday and got it "almost finished" yesterday afternoon.

Did some swapping of blades, finally got a snath for the Schroekenfux blade with a shallow tang. Had to do a little tweaking to get it to fit.

In the process of getting that "Success" snath gussied up. Metal components have all been removed and thoroughly wirebrushed and the wood components sanded. All delamination ridges have been sanded down smooth and it should prove to be a very sturdy and relatively lightweight user. Here are some photos of the cleaned up hardware.

I'm refinishing the snath in a nice bright blue color. I've only got one photo at the moment but there's a bunch of disorganized mess in the background so I'll just pop up a pic when it's done in a few days. :D

Yes--I'll be giving them a coat or two of clear lacquer before reassembly.

I've got all the other parts hung and drying in the workshop right now. Clear lacquer on the iron and steel and more blue on the nibs. Masked off the topnut on them to maintain contrast. :)

Got a little brush removal done. The red dogwood is already springing up like mad crazy in the back pasture and if I don't knock it down it'll take over in no time. The snow made for awkward mowing conditions, but I think it went pretty well. Those are pretty big bites for woody stemmed growth, and I actually put more force behind a couple of my strokes than I really needed to. :)

Yup! I actually picked one up from Cam at Machete Specialist. It's a good cheap unit though the blade is barely tensioned at all. G-pig will be making a snath for it for me that's sized to my other half's dimensions. I figure she'd enjoy a European pattern more than an American. :)

A repost of the video at the bottom of the previous page just to make sure no one misses it.
