Who has an "AL Mar" Knife..?

I have a Nomad. It's a great lightweight folder. It's well made, sharp, and uses quality materials. If they do anything else that interests me I'd have no hesitation at all about getting another Al Mar.

I have an older micarta Shrike, descriptions of smooth will not do justice to the action on this knife- give the thumb stud a nudge and the blade leaps open. Fit and finish are first class; full flat ground vg-10 blade is very sharp. Only gripe is that on this particular model the clip placement allows the knife to ride rather high for my liking. Used to have a g-10 version as well, kind of wished I still had it. Not certain about other models but this one was actually produced by Moki, very high quality stuff.

A few years ago my wife gave me a Havana Clipper, which is the same size as the SLB. It's a very well made, classy gent's knife suitable for office carry.

Wow, A pretty good consensus. Everybody seems to like Al Mar knives alot. Whats not to like? I snapped the clip off my knife last year, on a chair, in a pizza restaurant. I called Al mar Knives and spoke to a gentleman there. He promptly sent me another clip in the mail, for free. You can bet I am a loyal customer now. I bought the Mini Sere in Las vegas, from Bonds House of Cutlery. A few weeks ago I bought my Nomad from New Graham. This is real quality cutlery sold by very reputable dealers. This is what it's all about!

I've got a Hawk, Falcon, Osprey, and SLB. I like them all. Al Mars seem to have a good cutting geometry. the lines on the knives also seems to flow nicely.

Curious to see what forum members have an Al Mar knife..If so which model do you have? What do you think of it? Can you post some pics of your knife as well? I remember dying to have the Al Mar SLB for the longest time - and then when I got one, esp for the $70 give or take I paid for it..I was not that impressed. I had the knife for a day at best and never used it. What didn't I like about it? I dunno..I like small knives, but the SLB just felt too light and a little TOO small for $70+ dollars. It might make a nice $30 knife, but not $70. Some of their other knives are very nice looking - so I wanted to see what others felt about other Al Mar's.

Al Mar Eagle Ultralight Talon (1005UBK2T) . . .

I'd say the Talon definitely looks the money, just judging by the nice tight weave on the G-10 and the attention to detail on the knife.

This thread is dangerous. I'd decided I was going to do nothing but go after thumb-hole opener knives, and now I'm really eying that SERE 2000 folder...

Have this rubber handled Hawk:

and a Denali model with gold Fighter Weapons School shield:

This one was personally inspected by Sal Glesser himself who told me the bladesteel used was MRS30.

That SERE fixed looks more pointy that usual on other sites pics... is it a special edition/modification ?... or is it actually pointer that online pictures shows in sellers sites?

I could think to get one for myself.

BTW I have a Hawk with Black Lip Pearl handles... it's gorgeous !... mostly my gentleman knife.

Thanks !

I have the mini sere. The blade is just a little shorter. The blade is really pointy. You will love this knife. It is the berries! When you hear the click of lock-up you will be glad it's yours. And sharp, The vg10 holds a edge so sharp you will just want to cut something. Al Mar Knives knows their business, and business is good.

:...release of lock..."
Good point Fujita, you brought out a something which I had failed to mention earlier; in that Al Mar created the mid-lock (that's a back-lock fitted mid-way on to the back of what would usually have been placed at the back-end of a Buck folding knife).
This once again, demonstrates the late Al Mar's brilliant creative solution in coming up with a quicker one handed unlocking back-lock (if that makes sense to you).

I hate to rain on your parade, but, Neither Al or the Japanese "Invented" the Mid Lock I once owned a fine mid lock from an 1872 exabition board of Joseph Rogers of England and they did not claim an invention, so I must assume it is even older than that.

That said, the Al Mar line is outstanding.

I like Al Mar knives, and even owned a few. That said, I'm done with them. The fit and finish were perfect; they were sharp; and they were nice to look at. But I can NOT justify spending around $100 for a knife made of AUS-8. I can get S30V or ZDP-189 at that price, when a lot of the AUS-8 knives I own only costed me about $20-$35 and have the same funtionality of the Al Mar.

I'd have to agree on this point. Nostalgia for Al Mar aside. A C-note for either AUS8 of 420HC(Buck) seems rather high.

The point is not modified, nor is this knife a special edition.
The only modification I did was remove the rubber thingy from the sheath.

Kind regards,

Jos

Are you talking about the Operator's Sheath? Is that made of Kydex? So, in removing the rubber thingy, does the sheath still SECURELY hold the knife? Enough for upside down carry, let's say? What are your opinions on the sheath... I read that you can do, "inside the waist" carry, how does that work?

I've been eying that SERE Operator for quite a while, and just ordered it. It will be my first Al Mar, as well.

Eagle Talon, black micarta. No. 72 out of 200 first production. Expensive for AUS-8, but one heck of a cutter. Anybody know where I could obtain a pocket clip to mod it with?

22 years with an Airweight Sportsman. Two of them active duty Army. Many, many deer have been dressed with it, lots of whittled sticks and the ATS-34 steel has a straight and sharp edge.

I've owned others that I have traded or sold. I can not in good faith buy anymore of the classics as I do not trust if they are original productions ordered by Al himself or if they are recent production copies. It is a shame.

I was a lil' hesitate to purchase the Falon UL because of the AUS8, boy was I wrong. Al Mar definitely know their steel, my Falon gets hair splitting sharp every time I touch it up. The fit and finish is.....PERFECT. You can't find a longer blade for the weight, nor a better blade/handle ratio; the slim Micarta handle is sturdier than my military big fat G10 with SS liner. I highly recommend Al Mar to anyone

I own the following Al Mar Knives

This Fang I because I like daggers

And this set that was gifted to me by a family member. Bernard Levine has just wrapped up an appraisal/history on the set. It is a 10th anniversary edition from 1989 marketed only in Japan.
