Who has an "AL Mar" Knife..?

I also have an Al Mar SERE VII (without the bolster engraving/logo).
Have had many Al Mar knives through the years (both fixed and folders), but had to sell some to fund other knife purchases. Since I love chute-knife designs, there is no way I'm ever letting go of that SERE VII - gorgeous knife!!!
Dag-nabit - you have a beautiful set there!

Regards,
Mike

When Al Mar started his knife company in the mid to late seventies they were the best factory made knives. They were custom quality. The blades on his early folders were ground pretty thin but it made them awesome cutters. His front lock was used in cooperation with a custom knifemaker named W T Fuller who used the front lock on modern folders. I read this in Blade magazines when W T Fuller passed a way and Al Mar said he got the idea for the use of the front lock from and with the permission of Mr. fuller and was praising Mr. Fuller. I am Sure A G Russell is right the mid lock was used in the 1800s. Al Mar made a multi tool cut to the bare bones based on earlier tool used by the OSS that had a type of pliers with a cutting blade of some type. Al Mar Micarta folders the Eagle, Falcon and Hawk are very nice and very sharp. Even though they use AUS8 steel Al Mar Knives get great performance with proper edge geometry too many knife companies don't understand. The eagle and Falcon knives currently in production are excellent knives. Some of the new stuff I don't care for but all appear to be well made. Just my 2 cents.
BTW, I think I read in Blade many years ago Al Mar helped Sal Glesser of Spyderco knives with Finding Japanese makers for his line of knives.

Thanks Mike,

Nice to hear you are impressed enough with your SERE VII you refuse to part with it.

I have several Mar knives like the Tanken, Warrior, and Sere. I heard that maybe some of the old models may be put back into production. Has anyone heard that rumor?

Got four of them. Two of the smaller ultra lights, a SLB (stumpy as my son calls it) and an Osprey. I like them all.

I have been known to use my Falcon as a tie clip on occasion (only the clip showing).

Sere 2K is my backup knife (Fallkniven F1 and/or one of the Fehrmans as my primary one(s)) during my survival trips and it is absolutely outstanding. Very solid and fast to deploy. I also have the Shrike. It is not a real user for me, but could serve well as an EDC. It is fairly light and easy to carry.

Quality-wise, I am very impressed with Al Mars and I'll surely have more knives of Al Mar in due time (that is: when I can keep my job).

I’ve had several Al-Mar’s through the years, they’ve all been very good knives.
I had the original SERE back in 1983 or ’84( ? ), when ever it first came out, and I was impressed enough to stay with them every now and then. I never bought any of their lower end stuff, only the top drawer items, so I can’t comment on their entire line.

I just bought a Mini-SERE. The quality is still great. These are really under-appreciated knives. The Mini-SERE is my new favorite EDC.

I've got SERE 2K and eagle ultralight and I'm happy with both:thumbup:

I recently picked up an Auto SERE. The knife is actually made by Benchmade
where did you get this from? just wondering:confused:

I own the following Al Mar Knives

Any news on your appraisal/history...if you don't mind me asking? Also would you mind re-posting the pictures, they are gone now, but I remember it as a three piece set...am I right?
Regardless, hope you received great news!!

I own 2 and bought my wife a pearl handled Osprey. She loves it. I bought a stainless handled one (a little heavy) on ebay, and a nice Falcon in jigged bone at a knife shop while out touristing in San Francisco on the wharf at We Be Knives. I think they are very nice, and wish they cost less. I am able to get these knives extremely sharp, so I am liking the steel. Al Mar is a must for knife collectors.

I bought a balisong with the Al Mar logo on it many years ago at a pawn shop. The shop owner did not know the person that pawned it so he could not give me any history on the knife. It is stamped with the word "prototype" and a number.
Is this typical of Al Mar knives or did I get a counterfeit?

Eagle talon auto, 154 blade, snap and lock are tight as can be, used for serious social work for while, now semi retired.

i just got a sere 2000 in a recent trade. i had always liked the design, but had never even seen one in person, so when the trade became available i thought i'd give one a try. i have not been disappointed. this is one of the most solid folders i have. it's also one of the heaviest. the weight doesn't bother me though, just adds to its solid feel.
my knife opens effortlessly with just a flick of the thumb. when i first received it, the lockup had a little verticle blade play in it, but seems to be fixing itself after repeated openings. unlocking is also effortless, although i find the liners to be sharp on the exposed edges.

the black coated vg-10 blade keeps its edge quite well, and is easy to touch up. the black coating is holding up really well, and only shows minor wear marks.
the pocket clip is strong and secure. the low riding clip allows the blade to sit very comfortably in my rfp, but fast retrieval is something that has to practiced. i added a paracord fob to aid in withdrawal and presentation.
this is a workhorse of a folder. ergos are great, very solid, edge geometry is spot on, just a very capable knife.
i would rate this folder pretty high on the list, right up there with my milie and mt lcc.
