I started with large combat knives, working up to a Randall #14. Settled for a Camp Tramp in a Bladetech Kydex sheath so I would actually use it, and for a 7", it does all I want. I can dig for worms fishing with my boy, not worrying about the collector value.
I've been looking for the perfect pocket knife for about 30 years. Started with a Gerber LST. Great knife, too small. Discovered clips, worked through Spydercos up to the latest Military PE, CRKT's up through the M16 Ti, CF and M1-13k. Kershaws - Boa and Vapor II.
And I kept bumping up against excess is some form or another. I just wanted a midsized, 3 1/2 blade, good steel like S30V, flat ground and drip point for best all around utility use. I wanted a reliable lock - I understand why some folks prefer a small straight knife now after experiences with liner locks. I needed a tough, durable handle material, and I wanted leading tech construction proven to work.
I have tried to test drive a cheap copy for ergonomics. That might be the only justification to buy a lookalike, but it did help. It also sorts out why the cheapy is a waste of money in and of itself, as certain design requirements will be left on the accounting room floor!
So after all the years of looking, I came across a drop point oval hole opener framelock with G10 and titanium construction, mid size, clipped, and rugged as I want. It came yesterday and certainly pointed out the differences between an original and copy, authorized or not. And I can customize it through the maker as time goes by, or do it myself, to keep it The One.
When you look for the specifics, let them lead you to the knife. I now have a Ranger Green Gen 6 Strider SnG for my EDC.
Never knew I would do that.
