Who has Served?

Deutsche Bundeswehr, Feldartilleriebataillon 21, Schwalmstadt.
Learned to fill the Fulda Gap with grenades.

Had my best and most interesting time at the Service and Ordonance Company on Grafenwoehr, under US command.

Served before being knife-nuts: My EDC was the four-pieces mess-kit (young soldiers are always hungry), most important item was the bottle-opener. For heavier work I used the field spade. The issued field knife was kept safe in the "Spind" by order of our commanding officer. It never smelled fresh air, but I managed it to lose it, anyhow ;-). And yes, there was a pocket-knife, as green as the trousers.

Graduated High School then 1974-1977 Army Airborne, Combat Engineer, served both at Ft. Bragg and in Germany. Left Sgt. E-5, enlisted for a one year option open to prior service in the Army Reserves in a Basic Combat Training Unit. Loved the summer camp but bored by the rest. Left for good.....interfered with my weekends in college. Son just graduated from High School and I steered him to the Air Force. He is being trained currently at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey Ca. as a Russian Linguist to serve in AF intelligence.

Spent 9 years as an 11B and wouldnt change it for the world. Enjoyed, Benning, Campbell, Polk, and Camp Atterbury. Any Rakassans out there?

Started in 90 in the KYARNG, then regular Army since 95. Most of my operational posts have been somewhere in the XVIII Airborne Corps (minus a year in S. Korea).

DBH: not a Rakassan (aviator), but played with the 187 several times at Polk and on Campbell's back 40:) Actually, my ASSLT Bn was habitually lined with the Deuce, but I've got to compliment you all for having a damn fine unit. I'm sure there are actual serving Raks on this board--find'm everywhere

I joined the Air Force right out of high school in 1977. I flew as a crewmember on USAF cargo jets for 20 years and have had the pleasure of visiting 63 countires during that time. I'm currently on a hardship tour in Hawaii. :) hehehehe

Thanks to all who support the military and thanks to all those who have served, its a great fraternity!

MedOpsPogue, I was in Delta co. 15th Eng. BN (Combat Heavy) over on North Fort Lewis from 87 to 89.

Main Fort Lewis and North Fort Lewis--separated by a highway and a twenty-years time warp!

How did you like Yakima (hahaha)!

Allen.

U.S. Army, 1984 to 1988.
Basic at FT. Mclellen, Alabama, AIT at Ft. Gordon, GA.
Served with 67th Signal Battalion, Ft. Gordon, GA.

I served as a 31S (later changed to 29S), Field COMSEC Repairman. I had three ASI's by the time I got out!

I kinda regret getting out when I did, although I have had a good career as an electronics technician since, thanks to my Army electronics training.

Nothing special happened while I was in, although while on a field excerise, we were accidentally shelled by some Puerto Rican National Guardsman, somehow. No one hurt, but it made a lot of racket. Nothing at all compared to what all the vets who served during wartime have gone through, however. Heroes all!!

1977 - 1981 USAF

Talked my nephew into serving (USAF presently 5 years in) and have my son prep'd and ready to go when graduated (whatever branch looks good to him)!

AllenC:
Funny story about Yakima. I joined the Army to see a bit of the world. Learned a new language: Korean. Was gonna see the world. Ended up at Ft. Lewis. Still hoping to see a bit of the world. Spent every third month at the Yakima Firing Center.
What was so funny? I enlisted from my home town of Prosser Washington. 40 miles east of Yakima......
