Who here brings their knife out for dinner?

I have been known to do just this very thing. I'm not shy with my knives and while taking care not to blunt my good steel on the ceramic plates i regularly employ whatever happens to be riding on my belt or in my pocket for dinnertime.

Of course I carry a knife to a restaurant. Of course I would use it at the restaurant if I felt the need.

I cook my own steaks.

Serious?
it's a matter of manners. I don't bring distilled water to friends houses. Nor do I bring cutlery to restaurants.
This is a joke right?

Interesting that others replied in support of the idea.
Nope, no joke Zombie.
I don't do it to be rude and I don't make a show of it. No one that has ever noticed seemed to take any offense.
I just enjoy using a nice sharp knife to eat my meal with.:)

I think all of the replies here have been great! Some good honest opinions.
I find it interesting how varied the opinions are on this simple subject.

I didn't realize so many were afraid of there EDC or restaurant carry of getting dulled up from cutting on a plate. I live to sharpen my knifes I just thought we all did.

I mean, I always bring a knife with me out to dinner. Unless I'm eating at the local fascist, no-knife-through-our-doors restaurant. But I don't tend to frequent that place. Service is subpar.
They tried to have a place like that around here, didn't schedule any servers cause scheduling them is oppressive, they could come into work any time they wanted...

Guess which restaurant doesn't exist anymore cause there was never any waitstaff on duty so customers stopped coming

If I know I am going out for steak, I take my Opinel #8.
If caught off guard, I use my GEC HJ 15. My wife doesn't mind. There was a recent family vaca in a big house, bro-in-law grilled steak, tbe house had one dull steak knife. I had taken more than one knife, so everyone got to eat their steak before it got cold.

I've never run across a restaurant's knife that was inadequate. If I did, I'd be more likely to pick a steak up whole and gnaw on it than to use my folder. Probably wouldn't be considered any more ill-mannered either way.

Need more pictures.
I like this one as a folding steak knife.

Well there's another option here: bring your DMT folding serrated sharpener. The diamond rod will let you sharpen both serrated and regular steak knives. If the restaurant knife is too dull, whip out your sharpener and work it over. Just don't drop diamond dust on your steak, major bad for your health. If you sharpen all the knives at your table, maybe they'll knock $10 off your bill.

Dang, what IS it about dudes on this forum posting pictures of steak with cool knives? My baser instincts cause me to immediately zero in on the steak and ignore the knife. It's breakfast time here, and now I'm hungry for steak. ;)

There are some gorgeous knives coming out in this thread.
I get the point you guys are making but I have to ask... What kind of restaurants do you go to? There would be a polite tap on the shoulder , followed by "Excuse me sir..." in any place I frequent.

Also there would most likely a free meal in it because the cutlery was sub par.

Maybe the difference in culture. I've only been one time in my life to a place where the waiters wore tuxedos, gloves, and hankys draped across their arm, the food cost $25 per bite (small bite), and they brought some kinda bowel to dip your fingers in? I didn't like the atmosphere, the food, or the snobbery.

I keep an Opinal No. 8 in Inox in the console of my truck just for food duty.. I drop it in my pocket any time I go into a restaurant.. Never know what ya need to cut!! John
