I relied on a tomahawk as a tool and backup weapon in Iraq. I chose for the entire team, and then afterwards, the entire platoon to bring one, because not only were they were soo useful. (ive always carried one on training missions, and found out how useful they were for building sub surface hide sites) but they were the preferred tool of the men that went before us in our specific job.

And because it performed soo well, I keep em both in easy to access locations around the house.. Including next to my bed. Which my girlfriend thinks I'm crazy. Like literally. My theory is, (my house is absolutely PITCH black at night when I sleep. Its that way for a reason) is if I hear someone coming into my house, I have a weapon that doesnt take any noise to put it into operation, never runs out of ammo, is silent, defeats body armor, can instantly incapacitate arms, legs or spines if i need it to, or bash you on the back of the head, if I dont want to kill, in a nearside ambush (my hallway). She thinks I'm crazy. I think I'm level headed.
To me, I think a gun has too many disadvantages in a crowded urban setting in which I live. Walls are thin, people are many, and its harder to control lethality levels with a bullet. Muzzle flashes ruin night vision, they are REALLY loud indoors, are ineffective if the intruder has body armour on, and also alerts neighbors when fired. (which i care not to do)
I admit, having this thing in ones hands, when going out to investigate, could potentially make anyone look crazy.. but I know better. I have the training. She dont. What do you guys think.

My VTAC hangs from my gun rack at the moment.. Personally, in the event of a home invasion, my first weapon I would reach for wouldnt be my VTAC... Nothing against it or in any way attempting to dispute the lethality of what you stated, but thats just my choice.

Surefire on the nightstand, some sort of pistol in the drawer, and either a hawk or rather large fixed blade at arms length under the bed frame, usually both.

My hawk lives under my bed, ready to be grabbed if I hear an intruder. Woke up one night to find someone hammering at my front door and I can tell you that it was a comfort to have it to hand as I went down to investigate. Turned out to be a false alarm but the hawk stays- luckily my wife agrees with me on this one.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it to hand.

I would consider that unneccessary clutter in the bedroom.
I keep a .40 Glock and a surefire close at hand.
I also have good layered security. Outside yard lights, motion activated lights, steel doors and jams, good alarm system, and 2 dogs.
We sleep pretty well here.

I have one hanging above the headboard below a old rabbit ear double barrel but both are more decoration than anything.I keep a S&W 28 357 mag in the bedstand with a 1,000,000 candle power spot beam and a Ruger 45 auto as backup....Mike

I have an RMJ Kestral in the nightstand to augment a Winchester Defender 12 guage and SureFire flashlight.

That Winchester defender would be my choice for home defence.I was looking at one at a gun shop.Nice compact package....Mike

STAGE 2

Surefire on the nightstand, some sort of pistol in the drawer, and either a hawk or rather large fixed blade at arms length under the bed frame, usually both.

Thats exactly what I have. A pistol and surefire in the drawer, a hawk on the side of the bed, and a 12 inch bladed knife at my head board. plus i have two staffordshire terriers as well.
My hawk is always the main weapon for me. If I hear the typical bump in the nite, fine, but if i hear something, that sounds like an entry team smashing thru the door, or 3 or more thugs gettin crazy, then its pistol time lol.

I think your girlfriend is onto something.

lol, you may be right.

IMO dogs are your best alarm system. My two bark at anything making a noise at night. We live in the country. One night a car pulled into the drive, the dogs woke me up.I shined my spot beam out the bedroom window into the car,it left...Mike

Its easy to write someone off as being a little nutty when it comes to home defence. That is, until youve been invaded. My situation was aprox. 3am, An insanely drunk man kicked the front door in and walked into the bedroom. It is a VERY sh...y feeling being naked, half asleep, seeing a dark silouette and surprised in your own bedroom when seconds before being deeply asleep. We got him out, but many years later, I ALWAYS have a baseball bat by the bed. Actually we are temporarily on an isolated Indian reserve known for violence. So, yes, I have a hawk within reach just behind my night table. And I am mentaly prepared to part the hair of any C... sucker that tries the same stunt. I have no desire to hurt anyone, but I also refuse to be a passive victim. Its not a game to me.

wow.. that would be quite a situation. though, i sleep half clothed... (bad habit from iraq) if i seen that, not only would my dog be goin crazy, but even if i didnt have dio and sissy, i would have grabbed my cold steel hawk from my mattress, and split that guys skull IMMEDIATELY, if not sooner. im not a violent fellow either (especially after the war) but if you come in my house, its a different story. glad to see you made out alright. I dont blame you. I take personal, and home defense pretty seriously. its all that we have pretty much. our land, and our 'castles' per se. were already seriously oppressed, i mean regulated by the king, i mean government enough as it is. the least we can have, is a quiet home, with our own personal belongings in it, and do whatever we want, whenever we want. To have someone invade my house, would just push me over the edge. Id split his wig.

I always have my loaded Beretta 92FS on my nightstand with a tomahawk leaning against my bed. Both easily reachable if there is an immediate threat at the top of our stairs (where the bedroom door is) or inside the bedroom (if it were kicked in). However, we also have two dogs that do very good at alerting us to anything unusual. If they do that and I hear something downstairs, it's the 18" 12-gage that I grab.

Got my Glock 32C in the bedstand, my Benelli M1 tactical leaning against the same, with one of my Surefire Z2's next to the alarm. Lying on the floor next to the bed are two APBTs and a 90lb boxer.

Don't have room for a hawk at bedside! :D Got 'em throughout the house though!!!!!

One dog in the yard, one in the house, one hawk by my bed in a nook (within arm's reach), old school GI Angle-Head flashlight, 'coarse ground' Hissatsu beyond that, then a rifle between myself and the bedroom door.

Tools in the toolbox.

Take care.
