Who keeps a 'hawk by their beds. Anyone?

Dude, I am still in Iraq and my hawk is just one of the many weapons I sleep with. It will go under my bed when I get back home this summer and I am certain my wife will think I'm crazy too!

I use the Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk. Stock version, no tricks. As far as unit, all I can say is I am an infantryman working in the Greater Baghad Urban Area. What a sh*thole.

Another 11B eh? good job. Yea, i know what kinda shithole it is. spent a year pullin missions outta camp falcon in south baghdad. Are they still burning their trash, cars, tires and dead animals at night?

You know it. They burn every thing here except feces. I was wading through the other day. Night time here is just the strangest. Did you know about big explosion at Falcon? I was three miles away and it woke me up - I saw huge flarings on the horizon. It was in the news a couple of months ago.

I am attached to unit that has a a horse on the patch, if that helps.
So do you miss it? My second time here. Missed it until I got back.

nighttime is the strangest there.. with those crazy call to prayer records they play, that sound not only too slow, but backwards as well. then the huge plumes of smoke from dead animals and tires covers the first 2 feet of the ground, and smells of death, with barely enough light to illuminate the surrounding area.... ive often wondered if i was in hell, and the devil himself was talking to me... very erie to say the least...

My detachment left falcon about the end january '05. I heard about that ammo explosion though. Im glad noone there got hurt.

and yes, i know your parent unit. we worked under their 5bct while at falcon. do i miss it? VERY. it was the only time i felt alive.. like i was actually DOING something. it ruined me too. now, nothings ever good enough. nothing ever compared to how i felt while over there. everything bores the hell outta me now, and im bitter too. lol. the only thing that even comes close, is racing my car, and that falls way short.

Hope you can find some peace brother. I'm going to work real hard at it if I get back this time. Trying to think of getting home as something a lot guys don't get - a second chance.

You too man. Ill tell ya what though. If you already havent, find a good hobby. something takes your time up, and distracts you from the suck thats still burned in you mind. my cars, softball, and shooting sorta does the trick.. most of the time lol.

I had a buddy that just got back not too long ago and he said that they had intramural (sp) softball at night in Iraq. Their company had teams and they played at night!!! I thought that was kinda cool. He was a 74 Delta

thats why. cuz he was a 74D. alll the non combat arms at our post had basketball alllll day long for whenever they wanted too. :(
Though I was actually happy pullin missions back to back to back, on the days where it would just wear on you, id have given anything to play a game of softball with the pogues. i had all my equipment too. softball to me, is like a reset button. i use it to forget about the daily stresses caused by the morons appointed above us in the army lol. thats ok, workin everyday made time go by really fast.

My theory is, (my house is absolutely PITCH black at night when I sleep. Its that way for a reason) is if I hear someone coming into my house...

I have a weapon that doesnt take any noise to put it into operation,
Check.
never runs out of ammo

is silent
Until you hit the guy, who then starts screaming bloody murder...

defeats body armor,
Hmmm... that would depend a lot on type of axe and type of hammer, right? Is this an issue in Detroit? I'm not saying it couldn't happen, just wondering what percentage of home invaders wear armor.

can instantly incapacitate arms, legs or spines if i need it to,
"Instant" is a strong word.

or bash you on the back of the head, if I dont want to kill

*alarm bells sound* Danger Will Robinson!

If you recall from your training, hitting someone upside the head with a baton counts as Lethal Force. I'd imagine that civilian law would also consider smacking someone in the head with a couple pounds of steel as "lethal force". If it's not a life-or-death situation, you probably shouldn't be hitting someone in the head with anything.

To me, I think a gun has too many disadvantages in a crowded urban setting in which I live.

Walls are thin, people are many,
Which is why it's important to choose ammo types appropriate for your location.

and its harder to control lethality levels with a bullet.
If it's not a life-or-death situation, you _positively_ should not be firing a gun. "Shooting to wound" is not acceptable anywhere in the U.S., so far as I've ever heard. A firearm is fundamentally lethal force.

Muzzle flashes ruin night vision, they are REALLY loud indoors,
Check. Would be less of an issue if this country hadn't slapped restrictions on suppressors back in the '30s.

are ineffective if the intruder has body armour on,
Again, depends on armor, depends on gun. Figure out the most likely scenario for your situation, and plan your gear accordingly.

and also alerts neighbors when fired. (which i care not to do)

*alarm bells again* Say what? You're kidding, right? If I ever have someone malicious break into my house, I want the whole freakin' block to know about it. I cannot conceive of a situation where a law-abiding citizen would want to kill someone in their house without the neighbors knowing.

She thinks I'm crazy. I think I'm level headed.

As a fellow Iraq combat vet, I'm going with your girlfriend here. You make a few good points, but:

a) a firearm has numerous advantages over a tomahawk, including standoff, repeatability, doesn't require great strength (can your girlfriend fight with your hawk if she's home alone?), etc.
b) an axe is not a less-than-lethal weapon
c) silent killing is not a plus for legitimate self-defense

The law differs where you live. I am from Indiana where we have very nice rules for a homeowner once someones enters your house.

Remember this phrase from Iraq -," I felt my life to be thratened."

Silence is irrelevant when someone BREAKS INTO your house. At least thats the case in Tennessee.

Exactly my point: if your life is threatened, you hit him with the edge.

If, as the OP indicated, you "don't want to kill", hit him with the flat, and kill him anyway, you're going up for manslaughter. A prosecutor would argue that you clearly weren't in immediate danger, since you had the time to risk a less-than-lethal hit.

It's the same reason civilians shouldn't use beanbag rounds in shotguns: if he's worth shooting, it's worth using buckshot. If the situation doesn't merit shooting witih buckshot, and you catch him in the head or stop his heart with a "less than lethal" round, you could go up for manslaughter.

Don't take my post as saying "don't stop burglars", take it as saying "if you're life's in danger, don't **** around trying to be cool."

If you're in Canada or other heathen lands where it's hard to get a gun, by all means use an axe.

9mm w/Glaser Safety Slugs within reach, K5 Tactical or CS Rifleman between the foot of bed and a cabinet. I did find myself transitioning from pistol to hawk for an outside disturbance once, as it occured to me that if our towns finest were also on scene, they might be less quick to try ventilating me, if they saw me with the hawk, as opposed to a firearm.

Ok, heres my reasoning. when you get hit either square in the throat, nose bridge, or on the spine direct, right up underneath your head, with this tomahawk, youre going down instantly. you arent screamin shit. youll mostly likely get knocked out from the blow. If not, i can still finish him right there immediately. no worries. I can assure you it wont be a long and horrible moan or scream. I bet your paycheck on it.

defeats body armor. meaning.. not DIRECTLY. like if i tried to hit him in the chest, while wearing a vest. I should have clarified it. he could come in with a kevlar and flak jacket on, and hes still gettin hit in the nose bridge, throat, or back of the spine. period. (thats why i said that body armor isnt a concern.) am i concerned with body armor these days? yep, they are allllll over my neighborhood. especially with the gun and knife shows and ebay just sellin em off all over the place. and then the crazies start watchin 44 minutes and gettin ideas. theres even military grade crap with multistrike rifle plates on ebay now.. to double tap someone in the chest automatically, could get ya in some trouble now. thats the way i see it. i never just out of nowhere assume hes good to strike centre mass. If i intend on killing, i shoot for the face. one time.

'can instantly incapacitate limbs" if youre walking down a hallway for instance, with say, a knife stretched out in front of you, and someone comes down on that forearm or joint really hard with this hawk.. you think youre going to be using that arm again anytime soon? im betting not.

and yes, these can be less than lethal. if i just ease up on the force, and use the reverse side, it wont kill someone. cuz im not sure i WANT to kill anyone outside of war. i know the laws... and what theyre going to do. i still think, that taking someones life is a big thing, and im not sure id want to do it for just home invasion. i know ill suffer in court but, hey, 'at least hes still alive" right? its just another threat level the hawk gives me. I believe its a bit harder to adjust those lethality levels with a gun, when youre half awake, and his shape is dark against the dark background. I believe its easier to accidentally kill someone with a bullet, than with a hawk, or other hand held weapon.

if its not a life and death situation, one shouldnt be firing a gun? true.. i agree. but how do you KNOW what type of situation it is?

yea i agree, they shouldnt have made suppressors unavailable without a tax stamp..

'and alerts neighbors when fired.' you may want to show the whole neighborhood but i dont. i dont care to play out a 'BAM" ..Then the cops and ambulances come, and carry out some dude.. while the whole neighborhood stares.. and the local news is watching too... not a great thing to show while youre in court. id rather have it done and over with. calm and quiet. ill call the police. theyll see him either knocked out or dead, depending on mett-t, and then theyll call the ambulance. noone will know why, or how come, till the information gets released in a more controlled manner, at a more appropriate time. im not into 'stealth' killing.. im no assassin. i just prefer to be discreet about my business, and not show the whole neighborhood what just went on. everyones already going to make you out to be a jerk for shooting a person with a gun, much less using the crazy ranger sxt or whatever 'intentional man killer' bullets you guys load in your guns... I prefer it to be quiet so that i dont alert the whole neighborhood. I dont need 18 stupid people running up to my door saying what happened??? what?? YOU SHOT SOMEONE??? OH MY GOD!!!! THE JONES'S SHOT SOMEONE!!!.. screw that. its not like im goint to bury the body next... im just a private person thats all.

and i dont need you questioning my ability to abide by the law either, just because of the way i look at things.

Dont mistake any of these violent description as me being a violent person. Because I am not. Hell, I never even fought in highschool. Not one single time. ever. I never even skipped a class before. I just am kinda passionate about home defense. Maybe its because I dont trust anyone around me, or too many years of 'security security security' being pounded in my head in the service. Im not sure. But I look at the physical security of my premises kind of strictly. Its mine. Its all we pretty much have in this world. And I also look at someone breaking into your house, as an offensive move. We have our two cars in the driveway. If you see that, but still decide to break in. That tells me one thing. You knew someone was home, and yet you didnt care. Why? probably cuz you aimed on doing them in, and getting them out of your way, so that you can clear out the house. (though, i still try my hardest, to see if hes armed, and if so, with what, so i can adjust the lethality to get the job done, without any unecessary force)
I look at a gun, as making its user look like they NEVER ever had ANY intention of utilizing the minimum amount of force to get the job done. The laws here are soo strict, that I just pretty much never pick up a gun anymore unless i absolutely have to. If i can identify early on, that the threat level, or enemy situation is very dangerous, then sure ill grab a firearm. but until i do, i prefer non projectile throwing weapons if i can. its just me.

I'm not a gun guy...

K5 by the bed, SR RatWieler and Fehrman Last Chance within arms reach...

Listen man, you're not alone in this. I have no military training, and I am also a private person. The way my house is set up I here any one come in before my parents do and I also keep it dark where I am and illuminated behind my best point of visibility. They can't see me but I can see them. I keep my hawk where I can grab it when I get up and a knife with it. The doors are already open. We live in the country with a crappy sheriff's dept. so personal security is a must nowadays. My hawk is a spike hawk, but I can use it with limited lethality if I need to, and I know what I'm doing. I have put in the practice. I am not violent either, but I am calm in dangerous situations, and I will defend all that is mine and my family's as far as I have to. My brother served in An Najaf for a year with the local guard and I am making him a hawk just in case he goes back anytime soon, although he prefers his kukhri, and his knife that I made him before he went the first time, for personal and home defense(not to mention three german shephards).

3 shepherds? well there ya go. lol. hell, i wouldnt even get outta bed lol. honestly, i dont even think the dogs would even get a nip in. once you stuck you head in the door and seen three of them barking loudly, youd be gone.

yea, i mean, id like a gun to use but, i dont know. if i pull a gun, someones going to die. and quick too. i dont want that. you know todays world. even if the intruder had an AK47, and shot at me, and missed, and i returned fire to stop him, his family is STILL goin to sue me for wrongful death,... if i even get out of jail... i admit, that the governments rules have wore me down. i dont want any part of it.... im thru. ill just use something else, and hope they take mercy on me lol. hopefully, my dogs will scare em away before something else happens.
