Who says it can't be done: Behold the BK34 TACBAR

This, surprisingly, makes total sense to me. Except for why you would be cutting a loaf of bread with this tool ;). I would think the bread would fall to pieces at the sight of it.

Perhaps an apple then?

I know if I had one I'd want to use it for everything from prying things that I probably shouldn't be, to seeing how many times I can slice a tomato.

I've got a blank drawn up for a tweener-sized one on 1095 steel. It's 1/4" thick, so I'll probably need to relieve it some. I may mill out the center of the handle a bit.

This whole thread is something else. It is really fun to see it coming together, and fast! I don't get how it's "lefty", though.....but maybe that's 'cause I am hopelessly righty with a (very) dominant left eye. I'm always leaning over woodworking cuts to see what I'm doing. I even learned to shoot (a BB gun) "Kentucky windage" (right handed, left eye to the scope) from my lefty dad....besides, some chisel cuts are bevel down and some are bevel up, so I wouldn't say this is exclusively lefty. Good on both of ya, Tom and JD. Very cool.

I like it a lot. Since I, too, am right handed but left eye dominant, I have always watched the left side of what I'm cutting - knife, hand saw, rotary saw, jig saw. I even draw my lines on what I'm cutting to accommodate the left eye watching. The "lefty grind" on this one would really work with me.

I think I speak for all of us when i say, "we will need to see it." This is just awesome!

Yup. I'm totally this way too. Right handed, but left eye dominant. I'm always looking from the left to right. The lefty rendering was an accident, but it seems a good accident so far.

I think it's "lefty" because the flat side is facing the right when you hold the knife in your hand. If you imagine cutting a loaf of bread with it, a lefty would have the sloped, chisel facing left, causing the slices of bread to fall to the left and the loaf would be held in the right hand and would be left with a flat cut.....if that makes any sense at all.

I could be totally wrong though.

that makes sense. Though note that a sashimi knife is often used horizontally with the flat facing down, I believe, and the piece is flipped over onto the non-knife hand.

And if you put the edge bevel on the flat side, then you can sight down the bevel instead if you like.... I'm reaching the conclusion (after quite a few 'dashi) that left/right handedness is so variable across cuts as to be almost meaningless except for a rather specialized blade.

Great work! Are you going to coat it with anything or leave it natural?

hahaha, cool.
Looks like a knife my friend made out of 1084, except this one has the corner bevel as well.

wow.. this is awesome. i'm away for a couple days and come back to the whole lot of you scheming and making new Becker protos? very cool. :) it would be even cooler if one of them were to be picked up for production.

Hey Everybody.......

I designed and we prototyped a BK 11 sized TacTul and it was one of the most unbalanced piece de merde I have ever held in my hand.... The Tweener version is some thing we should probably look at again......... Mayhap I should try to figure out an 11 sized one that I would want to put my name on........ I have several designs in the Keystone er....pipeline already and we probably are looking at a year or two......... First I have to sell my designs to the guy who has to sell them........ He is not an easy sell (which is plenty OK with me as I am embarrassed when I field a clunker) and he did not bite on the Tweener TacTul........ We shall see.........The stuff in the pipe has me WAAAAAY excited and I will share when I can.....

All Best......

Ethan
