Who Would Be Interested In Doing A Collaboration Classic Hunter With Me??

either way don't matter to me :) , the holes can be adjusted later, when the gold screws go in, I don't want to have all the fun here. :)
this stuff is nice and tight on the template and should be fun to play with.
I hope the heat treat hasn't changed the hole dimensions.

the bedding inside the Jade, drills just a little tighter than the Mokume
which I would have thought the other way, go figure

I'm getting hyped on this again..

one more thing
are you going to make the front bolsters the same thickness as the rear?
tapering the Ivory,,?
taking into account the tapered tang, IOW's, same width once finished..I can't recall going over that..
I'm sure we did though..

Yes Dan, the ivory will be tapered to match that of the tang taper, so that over all thickness at front and back are similar. Since you reminded me of that type stuff I wonder now. Maybe we better wait before shapng the bolsters. Better not get too many things in front of the ivory work.

Yeah, that good ol'Brownell's original glass bedding with a steel dust aggragate is tuff stuff.

OK Roger
I'll eye-ball the depth. then send you the works.
do you have the Blade back yet? and where the heck is Harry? .

I'm sure he took his computer with him didn't he? ;)

Dan, how close to same tang taper is the template to the blade? Should I hold onto the blade until I get the scales tapered or can I go ahead and ship the blade out to Dave for post HT finish?

Hey Harry where are you pal?

RL

it looked close.
as long as the Blade tang stays flat there should be no problem
the holes in both are Identical. and the pins will have just about a -.0005 fit
that's why I'm hoping the heat didn't shrink the hole, but it can be fixed if so.
this template is relieved to just where all the handle material should end up.
so if all is taken down to its back bone belly and rear is should end up just right. we hope :( ;)

looks like I got to get my butt in gear here
I'll see what I can do this week
I got a bone scan scheduled Thursday soooo I'm not sure just how the rest of the week will go..today is toasted already..

no peeps out of Harry?? I sent some of the Mokume craps to him before he was moving. :( maybe Bruce B knows?
Beep Beep Beep. :D I'm here in Halfway Oregon. I just picked up some of the scraps that Bruce had in WW. I have the same e-mail address as always - you can reach me there. I'm just about set up in my temporary shop (will be building a 30X40 with a 16X20 knife shop by Oct) I will be putting the bola together in the next couple of weeks and sending it on. Sorry for the fright, moving and all. STUFF, LOTS OF STUFF. anyhow I'm here. I'll be back in Halfway by the 7th. I'll check back in daily.

good to hear from you Harry :)

OK I'm just about done
just need to take some pictures and do some measurements for replacement parts. then off to Roger :)

ready for Rogers Ivory and Finish work on the Jade.

28 parts with ivory (I think)?
Roger I'll send you 12 Gold plated screws
and 12 dummy screws
and a long 2/56 screw to use as a pin pusher/puller.
a drill bill I modified for the screw heads
do you have a T6 wrench?
I'm sure you have rims and drill bits for the screw holes in the ivory
any questions let me know.
I got a little carried away profiling but all the meat is there for the Ivory.
the front has room to reduce..for the taper

OH DAN, you are some kinda GOOD.

I have no reams. It might be wise for me to ship back to you for drilling the ivory when that time comes.

The blade went out to Dave a couple hours ago (Priority Insured). He should have it Thursday.

I will email you my mailing address.

That work of yours looks SUPER. Now if only the holes in the tang didn't change too much from heat treat.

We should have a finished knife by hunting season.

RL

Dang, I sure hope the blank knife and the actual knife are the same! I know the holes'll be lined up cause the came to me screwed together but i wonder if the tapered tangs are exactly alike. I know I made them as close as I could but nothing done by hand is ever quite the same twice...

Dan that is beautiful work! Can't wait to see this baby finished.

Dave, you will need to dress the tang taper up a little on the belt grinder. I had to straighten the tang some after HT. Its close but not perfect. Just take it down to only what you have to.

Start looking for the blade Thursday. I insured it for $300 and put my name, address and phone number inside with the blade.

NOTE: REMEMBER that I left the cutting edge on her so you might want to dull it with some sand paper before doing any post HT grinding.

HARRY, thanks for chimming in the other day. Let us know when things a ready.

DAN KOSTER, I know you're caught up in getting moved in. How long do you suppose it will be before you can do some serious design work on the CERT.?

RL

you got mail Roger
thanks guys but lets see if this thing works before I take any credits..
I insured what I have here for $400.00 I'm not to worryied about my time in it.
and it's on it's way to Roger now.

Dave if the tapper is just out a little there'll be no big problem
the pins are a little shorter than the pin holes
just don't change the profile (anyone) on either the template or the blade, or we're in deep do-do. :D

I stayed with standard screws to make replacement easier for the new owner.
the front and rear pins are cut to length 1/8" pivot pins for ease of replacement.
the N/S inner thong tube/alignment jobby is just 1/4" tube.
the two center pins will have to be special made because of the Jade thickness the length of these pins they had to be tapped from both ends
( the taps are not long enough)
I'll post some spec's to put on a replacement parts list if you guys think that should be done. :)

I missed the mail today (07/10) but the mail man left me a notice that I can pick up Dan's package Monday at the post office. Also, Dave emailed me today that he received the blade okay.

RL

I didn't have a chance to work on the knife yesterday, but I did have a chance to do a little cutting with it. That baby is sharp! I sliced a sheet of paper a few times to get a taste of the edge through its length, then did my usual cardboard-cutting exercise; sliced an 8X11 sheet of stiff cardboard into 1/4" strips and then went back to the paper - it still sliced the paper nicely. That's better than my own blades usually do. :D With a more refined edge this thing is going to be one cutting machine. Nice work Roger!

Picked up the package from Dan today. Looks GREAT. Sean's mokume is wonderful too. Lots of good contrast. No slack in fit. All is tight.

Dave, I trust you will be sending the blade directly to me. Please email me so I will know when to expect it as I plan to be out of town periodically the rest of this month.

You guys correct me if I miss any steps here. I see it as: I finish up the handle work. I then send the blade to Steve for final blade finish, Steve returns it to me. I send the knife to Bruce for etching and maker mark (I guess that is 'Collaboration Hunter 2004' ?). Bruce sends it out to sheath making. From there it goes to Nick for the presentation edge. Is that about right? What did I leave out?

Dan K., what about the cert design? Any updates from Harry on the thong thingie?

In addition, isn't it Michael that will be doing the write up in collaboration with someone else (without going way back in the thread I can't remember for sure who the other is). Didn't we decide Dan K. would do the photography?

I reserve the right to call upon Dan for any handle work I may not feel I am properly tooled to do. So, there is a chance I may be sending the package back to him again before the handle is complete. At this point I do not believe that will be necessary.

RL

Wow Its sounds like the ball is rolling again. I need to have the stencil made still so better git on it. I saw Harry the other day, He came here and picked up the left over damascus for the Bola. Things are coming together on this one. Cant wait to see the knife.

Whom do I send it to for the sheath? I forgot.
