Who's excited for #47 Viper?!

Just ordered one in Indian Paintbrush. I wasn't going to order one 'cause I own a 55 Wharncliffe but I'm a sucker for the Wharncliffe. Just can't get enough of them.

Just ordered one in bocote, my first ever traditional.

Always had a soft spot for wharncliffes, this seemed to be the one for me. I'm excited to check out this whole traditional thing ;)

I just got my micarta viper in the mail. It's everything I hoped it would be. I do have a question though. The tip is needle like. I'm talkin super thin. Is this how they all are or just mine. It's easily the thinnest tip of any knife I own. I can see how it could be very useful but it almost seems like it would be brittle. Should I be worried?

Got mine in Monday

Only disappointment: the least sharp of any new knife I've ever bought. Gonna have to do some work on it to get it sharp.

Mine is needle thin also..... if its anything like my kershaw leek then yes you should worry because the tip will break off because its so thin.

You just need to use proper technique and not try to cut caulking from a formica counter ;)

I used it hard for a long time before that finally happened. Have had no issues since and the knife is still great to use.

Looking forward to keeping my tip intact on my viper but its certainly not the end of its usefulness if one does snap it off.

That's what I wanted to know. Glad to know mine wasn't just abnormally thin. Lookin forward to putting it through the paces.

I noticed that my spring is not flush when the blade is at half stop. It sticks out a little bit. I compared it to my #73 and it does not have that issue but my #73 also isn't flush when fully open but my #47 is.... does anybody have this problem with their viper, and what causes the spring to stick out or not be flush???

Every production slip joint I have ever owned is not flush in all 3 positions. It takes extreme tolarences and patiants to accomplish this. Now this is an expected feature on custom knives.

I care about open and closed personally, thats when my hand can tell the difference :)

I have noticed the same thing. If a production knife gets close to flush when midway open I consider myself lucky. My Viper is a little high at the half stop position but no bother :) all flush open and closed. You got a nice one sir!

Thank you Steve. Your stag is very nice. Thinking the conductor would be a great companion knife.

AL9, just my oppinion and mostly based on modern era traditionals. Enjoy your viper :)

MIne just flew in today. I admit rockgolfer's pic is much better. I need to get a new camera but I need more GEC's too.....oh man.
I think these two make a good pair though. Love the frontier bone. Any one know where to get the green micarta??

Sienna and Blackwood just arrived. The Sienna being a nearly perfect specimen with IMO some of the prettiest bone coloring GEC has used, a beautiful reddish brown. The blackwood being really more black/brown streaks, very slight spring gap. Excellent action on both. These knives feel wonderful in hand and are very pocketable. Very nice design all around. My congratulations to those scoring an ivory, those must be spectacular.

Just received my 47 in Indian Paintbrush and I'm glad I ordered one. I have a 55 Wharncliffe and thought they'd be about the same being that the Viper is only 1/4" bigger.
WRONG!
The Viper, although only a bit bigger is a much more substantial knife. So much better in the hand. I work with cardboard boxes everyday (shipping) and this Viper will be carried everyday. Fits in the watch pocket of my Wranglers perfectly.
I bought one of GEC's "seconds" and saved about 10 bucks. I checked to see what makes it a second but can't find an obvious flaw. I'm sure it's there somewhere but I can't find it.
If you take a look at the first pic, you can see GEC's "S" stamping on the tang to show it's a Second.
Glad I bought a 47 Viper.

Very nice. I have a GEC 2nd/EDC as well, a 65LB, and it appears their QC standards in that regard are quite high. The only thing I would say might qualify it as a cosmetic blemish is a slightly overspun pin, but I don't see anything 'wrong' on yours. Nice snag!

I am so excited, thanks to timberweasel's uber generous GAW...if the knife wasn't enough, he threw in a KSF pocket sheath, a Spyderco sharpening stone, and a fire steel. Here's a hastily put together foto...
