why a large knife is better in the woods - an informal trianing scenario

I would have pegged that as an OHO Sentinel rather than a OHT.

i do believe i have a Ranger 51 in a OHT box! (going by the MEC website where i bought it from)

either way, whatever model it is, IT ONLY HAS ONE BLADE and NO saw....

wicked little penkife. razor sharp out of the box, cuts shelter poles just fine, albeit SLOWLY under certain physical conditions, and the plastic scales are not that easy to grasp when wet and cold. That being said it is Trio-ed up with my khukuri and my becker BK7

Let's see a link to a Victorinox One-hand-trekker without a saw, and not some tiny little picture that only shows the main blade deployed.

"I can chop perfectly fine with a khukuri even though my hands are numb and I can't feel them...."

Bullsh**. :jerkit:

Allen, I find your posts and your attitude replusive and totally unnecessary. You need to take your meds or whatver it is you do - or start if you're not on them.

I don't know what your problem is, but do you ever dare bring it here again.

Understood? I will not repeat this again. I will just can your a** permanently.

This was a hang out with friends

I think it's pretty clear from this post that you violated the foremost rule in testing, "thou shall not have fun". Because of this all your results have been officially declared invalid.

Seriously it was a good read, informative, and food for thought. What more could you ask for? Well, if I were you I'd think about sending the SAK back to Victorinox and telling them they forgot to attach the saw ;):D

I need to join this discussion too.

About the test: good job. I just hope you didnt freeze too much though.

About all the knives: Any Victorinox, no matter the type, amount of blades etc, are not a really great outdoor knife. It is originally developed as a pocket knife or to be used for lighter camping. Normally they are great knives but they have limitations.

About the fuss about not using the saw or not: maybe next time it will be a SAK something saw vs some other saw test. Then the yapping will probably be like "why did you not use the blade instead".

Maybe someone else will do a test with a 4" fixed vs huge chopper.
Anyway, there is one thing that barely works on with a SAK but works with "bigger" knives, you can baton on them. That way you get the cutting power from a bigger knife but the safety of a saw.

That too would be interesting. A test where someone is to cut the material needed for a shelter using A: a 4" fixed (any brand that holds) and a baton, and B: a 6-8" chopper, kukri or similar.

nodh

I plan on doing the SAK saw vs. my Coast saw test. I am interested in the other test you propose, but I want to wait til I can afford a khuk to do it.

i enjoyed your test bushman. as far as people taking you to task for using this or that i say why not use what you actually carry? makes sense to me;)

Well, I've been a part of this forum for a long time.
And I've never been called a troll before...nor have I ever had the threat of being banned just for voicing my opinion here.

Was it my choice of words, or was it the "jerk it" icon, or merely the notion that I'm a skeptic when one claims that he was chopping with numb hands?

Very informative OP.

thanks for posting it !

So, what do you carry afield when you don't expect to jump in the ice cold water ?

Just curious !

It was your crap attitude and the jerkit icon. You could have approached it much more politely. No excuse. I wonder if you behave that way in person or if it's just "keyboard commando balls." You can be a skeptic without being an a**hole.

Don't do it again. That's all you need to know.

To each his own IMO a hatchet beats a big chopper and for me, thats what I use. Happy chopping no matter what you use.

I love hatchets and axes, have a bit of a collection. Its just more convenient for me to carry a large chopper. (packs easier than my trusty Iltis ax.....)
besides, the rangers here dont bat an eye if you wearing a knife/chopper. They get a bit inquisitive if your packing a hatchet or ax...to them it means your going to be chopping down trees...

Okay, point taken.
I'll try to be more polite in the future.

BTW, I was once temporarily banned from Bladeforums just for calling a fellow forum member an "idiot"....I guess I should have called him an "a**hole" instead....apparently that word is okay to use.

Bushman5, I apologize.

A**hole is more letters and demonstrates a higher level of literacy. :D

Thank you, Allen. I appreciate your understanding and your apology to bushman

Allen no apology nessacery, but thank you! i was just getting irritated at the times you listed. I think there was some misreading on what i wrote. I also think we view the term "numb hands with no feeling" differently.

to me its when my hands are so cold they are red, and there is'nt feeling in the fingers. I still have gross motor control though and can clench a large handle (like a chopper or shovel) quite well. I find it hard though to grasp small objects like my single blade wenger folder, lighter etc etc

thats my take on it.

back tot he thread, alls well.

Bushman, That sounded like a good test to me. We practice making fires and shelters, it's nice to see someone try under duress. I'm glad you had people there monitoring you. Good idea. Have you tried lighting a no match fire with cold or numb hands? I've tried it and it's a pain. Wouldn't want to try what you did. But it sure is nice to see someone try it.
