Why are busse knife values suffering

I can't believe a NICK went for $900. I was decried at about half that a bit over a year ago! Are we sure that's what it went for?

I'm a collector. If I make $ (which I do on occasion) I'm happy. If I lose a little bit, it's the cost of fondling. What's hard is when people DIVE (not pointing fingers - too many fingers to be one guy anyhow) on a blade, overpay and then the market is stuck up there. There is just some steel I'll never own b/c I'm not willing to pay that specific price.

But I'm still happy that all these blades are coming out. :) And buy what you want. If Jaxx and others only want new blades, so be it. I like some of hte old ones so I go looking for them. No harm, no foul. Enjoy the collecting no matter what.

I think the market is flooded for many reason, the biggest is the economy. So many people are losing jobs, losing hours, or selling to help thier family members. I am in that group as well. I had 18 Busse knives and I am now down to three. The ones I decided to keep were the ones that fit me the best. One of them is a SHBM, and I didnt keep this one because I planed on selling it later. I kept it because I felt it fit me the best. It will be a user for me, and I am not into the knife at a great price. I just feel that if a knife, gun, or what ever fits you well it is worth the money to pay for comfort. The more comfortable anything is the more you will use or practice with it.

I have not been here long, but I have seen the market change in both directions since my arrival. I think a lot of people buy Busse knives with the thought of selling in the future. I know I did at first, but it was because I could not handle these knives to find what fit me well. The market is forcing people to do more research first and not buy blindly, and I dont think thats really a bad thing. Buy once cry once kind of thing.

I would love to be able to buy another SHBM, SHSJ, and SHSH. I know that if Jerry doesnt come out with a line of them where I can buy them at factory prices I will not be able to buy one of each. The SH line fits me the best. I dont use large blades as choppers often, I use them more for batoning then anything. I just enjoy what I have and hope nothing forces me to sell the knives I kept that fit me well.

Lastly, I look at it like this. If you are willing to spend the extra for a fast luxery sports car, or a custom 1911 or custom hunting rifle, why not spend the extra for a knife that fits you well. Granted, something from the new fuison line may do the job just as well, but if the older SH line fits better, why not have something that fits like a glove.

Sorry for my long rambling.

I think some of it is prices correcting themselves...

When new piggies hit the market prices seem to rise with them playing catchup with the rest of us. Now the prices are leveling off and heading back to a reasonable level

I agree with DTP45ACP's post above, If I could handle many knives before purchase I'd have a MUCH better idea if I like the knife enough to buy one. I then usually end up buying 2 so I have a spare in reserve, because all my knives become users, I have no money for collecting anything!

Its because everyone is now collecting Cold Steel products ...........:D:D:eek::eek::D:D

(just kidding)

I'll say the same thing today that I said a couple years ago in response to a post about the high price of Game Wardens:

It's no different than Beanie Babies or Las Vegas condos. People decide they absolutely must have things they don't need and bid up the price based on perceived shortages. And when the prices rise, more people get in and bid the prices up even higher because they're such a great investment.

Which is pretty much what I said the year before that:

My son was once convinced that Beanie Babies were going to keep going up too. And baseball cards. Shoot, I once even thought that pre-ban "assault weapons" were a sure bet. Didn't quite work out that way.

A couple years down the line, a bunch of folks might realize that they really don't care that much about having 35 identical SHSHs or 25 different GWs, and all the sudden they might become a lot easier to come by.

Buy it if it's worth the price to you as a knife. Collectors' items are for suckers. That's my take on it, anyway.

YMMV, of course.

Basically, for the past few years we were in the midst of a speculative bubble. Now we aren't. And there are a lot of people who bought very freely for a time, and now have way more INFI than they'll ever have any real use for.

For instance:

Just kidding. You can never have enough INFI.

1. KnobCreek: After a big show like that, everyone is spent out.
2. The economy: It not the greatest right now, and when people get extra cash they buy guns, ammo, ammo and some more ammo, or investments such as gold.
3. Blade Show: The biggest show in the Country.
4. Too many knives: A lot of people are buying the new Busses that are coming out, and there are a lot of them. I like the new models, but Jerry please give us a breather.

Yep. Logically speaking, that pretty much sums it up.

Now is not a great time to be selling Busse knives.

I'm a collector as well as someone who enjoys using Busse's. Everyone here knows that I own a s***load of Busse knives, yet...

How many SHBM's do I own? None.
How many SHSH's do I own? None.
How many SHBA's do I own? Again, none.

I don't see the point of buying a knife at or very near its peak value for the sake of being in my collection when, like IGM said above, there's so many great knives coming out now, and I'm in a position to grab them for less and hold them. Will I ever own a SHBM, SHSH, or SHBA? Only if I find a way to trade for them with what I have or see them at a lower price... And if not, then so be it. I have a lot of great INFI now, and I'm happy with them. They won't increase in value "overnight" but it will happen over time, and I'm cool with that.

That's just my take, but then again, I've done the reseach and it tells me to get newer models from Busse, and sit on them for awhile. When their value climbs, trade them or sell them, and keep plenty for using! :)

Alex, I love your attitude, young man.

You've definitely got it right.

keep those thoughts coming i knew this would be very thought provoking :D

No offense, DOL, but that didn't seem to be the reason for this thread that went through my mind while reading your posts below. It looked a lot more like "Why are my Busse knives not selling?" with some alarming tone & phrases dropped in for good measure.

If you had really started this to discuss current values, and why the decline, then why not just have said something like,"It seems that even the classic 'old school' Busse knives are losing some current value on today's knife market... Does anyone have some thoughts or opinions to share?" instead of your post below in size 5 capitalized bold type with phrases like "suffering so badly", "recent devaluation has me baffled", & "Jerry doesn't make knives anymore". What do you think that folks not familiar with Busse's see & think about Busse Combat when they read these posts? This may be why many have posted their optomistic opinion, because we all know that Busse makes a quality knife, and we don't wish to SCARE OFF THOSE NEW TO BUSSE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED in buying some Busse's. Know what I mean? Seriously... Think, man, think! And be sure to stick to the facts. People outside of our group DO read these threads, too.

And... This is far from the first thread with value as a topic of discussion, as John the Texican has clearly pointed out. I don't think that we are all rushing in to do damage control here, but at the same time, Busse still continues to make quality knives and many here like myself feel compelled to state that in threads like these. The values may go up & down, but the knives are still at the top.

I DO NOT KNOW WHY BUSSE KNIFE VALUES ARE

SUFFERING SO BADLY WHILE OTHERS ARE NOT:confused: THE RECENT

DEVALUATION OF OLD SCHOOLS HOLY GRAILS HAS GOT ME BAFFLED!!!!!

THOUGHTS AND REPONSES REQUESTED.

These knives should not be going down in value they are true custom knives

made by jerry himself. And Jerry doesnt make knives anymore:eek: THEY SHOULD BE GOING UP NOT DOWN:thumbup:

If the values keep going down on the old school stuff maybe I better stock up and buy a few more SHSH's & SHBA's. :p

I love my old school junk and am glad to have some of the best knives ever made (BUSSE).

Now, back to important stuff like "DRINKING". :D

Yep, I might just luck into a few older Busse's in the upcoming months, myself.

As for drinking... Cheers!! :D

for long it will be time to snag more OLD School Grail knives some day they

will be worth there weight in gold:eek: Like Andre said now is a good time

to buy:thumbup: Paul

hey, I have a crisp $100 bill for anyone that's hurting in these harsh econmic times with an extra SHBM they need to offload - especially a safe queen.

to paraphrase the Boss, nothing says "I Hate You" to a fine Busse Combat knife than to leave it sitting around in a safe or elsewhere an not beat on it or at least use it. ;)
