Why buy a 600$$ knife ?

I don't own any expensive knives but I do own expensive bikes and frames. When you go custom (in bike frames) you're buying one mans view of perfection and his skill. If you agree with his view of perfection then nothing else will substitute. Those bikes will not be an order of magnitude better than a production bike but you are simply called to them.

Why spend $500 on a phone that you'll just have to replace in a couple of years?

I love knives like I'm sure everyone on this forum does. Why would I wanna buy a sebenza etc..., or a strider? So in general what makes those knives be worth that when I can by several high quality knives for the price of one of those ? I like the designs and the steels they use for those knives and I like the fit and finish. When I can also get that in a cheaper knife that won't cost my marriage. Please give me your take on this matter maybe I can be won over .

If you're happy with the knives you have, why should you be 'won over' to buy something you (seem to) feel doubtful of?

My one-handed EDC is a CRK Insingo, which was around the $400 mark. I certainly didn't buy it as pocket jewelry; nor did I buy it for bragging rights. Nobody cares about the knives I carry but me. I don't talk knives with other people, except on rare occasions with another guy at work who's also into knives. I bought it and carry it because I like it and it's a damn good knife. Will other knives cut as well as it does? Of course. I own lots of different knives. If I can afford something (and I'm not a rich man...not YET, anyways :)), and I like it, there is no need to justify it.

Similar can be said of people who wear Rolexes. I'm happy with Timex watches. But I can understand and accept why someone else wants a Rolex, even if I don't.

There are some poor kids who somehow drop $300 on a pair of basketball shoes. But that, IMO, is ridiculous and is totally different from my examples above of knives and watches.

Many people don't seem to have an issue dropping big bucks on something that'll barely last two years LOL... My current phone cost me $800.00 because I had to replace my last one which was stolen. :thumbdn::mad: I'm going to try and use it for as long as possible but they just don't last; this one is only two years old and it already starting to act up LOL. :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:

In terms of knife value you can definitely see a difference (materials & fit and finish, uniqueness, prestige)

I've been able to score much better deals IMHO on custom knives (fixed blades) and will add a custom folder at some point.

Been through the CRK & Strider phase too; and I had a Hinderer when they were really hot so I overpaid of course. :foot::rolleyes: All great knives but they are all gone now save for a couple SNG's I have left. They may go as well LOL.

Damn good point.

I'm a new collector and since I spent a grand on my phone, which I plan to keep for a while, spending $200, $300 or even $500 on a knife won't bother me that much. I like having quality things so I'd rather have a few expensive knifes than a lot of inexpensive ones. So far the only really inexpensive knife I own is a Leek (cool little knife by the way).

Even if you aren't a collector, it's inevitable. My longest running user was $1300.

Why. .... because I want to ! Lol

I enjoy the design, form, function or maybe they just appeal to me

But I find a lot of what I like around 250 300 nowadays

That's why the knife world is so great. There is a knife for every budget and whim. I now buy/collect mostly mid-tech and customs. Once you've held a few of these puppies you can't get enough of them.

Pride of ownership ,tighter tolerances, depending on the maker exclusive versions,to name a few.I bought an Andre Thorburn, paid 750 which is really over my limit, but this knife is a work of art,the action is the smoothest fastest flipper ive ever handled, the polishing of everything which is very time consuming, and the engraved bolsters as well, and a hand rubbed satin blade. I compared this to everything else in the price range and couldn't realy find too many knives with this level of polishing and detail

WOW! I'd buy that one too.

Why buy a $600 knife? Why not?!?!

Nobody is here to convince you how to spend your money, you either like it or you don't. Just don't go around thinking that we're crazy for spending what we do on knives.

At one point, I too thought $100+ was a lot for a knife, but then I tried one. Last year I dropped $1,200 on a Rockstead and I was quite hesitant to do so. However, once I held said knife I felt the price was justified by its amazing craftsmanship.

To each their own.

Someday I will have a TEI S DLC... LOL.

FWIF I love seeing the pics of yours to help feed my jealous addiction. ;):thumbup::thumbup:

Just suck it up, kiss your marriage good buy and buy one.
Then you'll know why.

Short Answer, "Choice" :)
Edit: Besides, my wife said it's cheaper than my old hobby of collecting guns/rifles.

Exactly.

You dont wanna spend $600 on a knife? Don't.
You dont wanna spend $100 on a knife? Don't.

Nobody is twisting anybody's arm here.

But, with a $600 knife you are going to get tighter tolerances etc (hopefully).

Dont want, need, or care about those tighter tolerances?

Fine.

I think it really depends on what you love. You can know what time it is with a 5 bucks Casio or with a beautiful 50k dollars Audemare Piguet , they both mark the very same time. Or you can cut the apple with a butter knife if you want to (i mean, my mum still does)... It depends on a mix of factors that are (imho): financial resources / level of involvement / priorities. Of course if your priority is to make sure that your family has food on the table and that the car has a full because you work at minimum wage, hardly you think to buy a $ 1,000 knife . Everyone has its own needs to balance with its own priorities.
