Why buy a 600$$ knife ?

Me either, done that twice, never again for any reason.

An acquaintance in special operations community told me "if it floats, flies, or f***s... rent it" :p

That's what is so nice about knives if you like and want a nice collection of buck 110 and you can afford it go for it. If you have more cash to put into the hobby then yeah get a nice collection of customs. Neither collection is for everyone, but there is a knife for everyone.

There is nothing like owning a custom knife, period! I have made some amazing friendships from the custom knives I have ordered over the years, and THAT is priceless! if you don't want that experience, don't do it, if you do, great. And quality over quantity.

Where were you guys 8 years ago LOL?...

Bladeforums; home of excellent knife discussion and marriage counselling/advice. :D:D:D;)

Well, barring their advice, here's mine: find the right woman.

We're celebrating 9 years this year, and she's as big a fan of my knife collection as I am. My trip to Blade this year? She's already budgeted for it before I even asked about it*. I daresay I've got a keeper.

*This is just one of the countless ways in which she's awesome.

I feel the same. Never again. For any reason. EVER!

Indeed. Same here also. I won't be doing that again. Once was enough for me.

My hobbies (knives, watches, lights, guns, etc...) are far less expensive and far more satisfying.

I would be afraid to use a $600 knife. I wouldn't enjoy it.

Seriously, if you are afraid of using it, it is definitely not for you. The whole idea of getting a high quality knife, car, gun etc is to use it like you stole it and enjoy the better steel, design, fit and finish. I get great pleasure out of using my expensive knives, but that is me, everyone needs to find their price point that they are comfortable with, my litmus test is if it doesn't interfere with my family obligations then if I want it I buy it and use it. That said like some here I am also a collector and rare or one of a kind make their way to the safe, like art I enjoy admiring them.

I spent more than I she told me to spend (on the ring), so I'm in the same club with you... but I find it hilarious, my brother in law spend nearly $20k on a ring for my sister, but cringed and handed my knife back to me when he asked how much it cost. It's perfectly acceptable to have a multiple thousand dollar rock, but it's unfathomable for the average joe to have a $1,000 knife.

Thing with that is a knife is seen as a tool. You don't see people buying a $300 half inch wrench because low end is few bucks and one that lasts is at most $30 for one which is crazy. People see the low end cheap prices and think $300 is a lot. They likely think at max $50 is about the most. Same as me I see under $100 to be just fine because I won't tell the difference when prying foam tape off parts of cars if it's a sebenza or a delica. Plus I don't see a sebenza lasting so much longer than a delica will. Same thing with all my other hobbies I can't justify high end priced stuff because low mid end serves me well. On other hand i understand buying it if you are the type of person who really likes it to be perfect and no chance of small errors. And I will admit they truly are beautiful knives way more than cheaper ones.

No idea. I would never buy a $600 knife. I would be more likely to buy a lot of knives (maybe 60 Rough Riders?) for the same $600.

Well, I ordered a $1,397 knife this morning. Why? Because it makes me happy. My wife is perfectly ok with it because after 45 years she still cares about my happiness. Go figure.

I don't see a sebenza lasting so much longer than a delica will.

Both a Sebenza and a Delica are great cutting tools. If you use both as cutting tools and not pry bars, they each should last many years. However, all else being equal, a Sebenza will outlast a Delica, given an equal amount of everyday cutting over many years. They are both great knives, but when it comes to build quality and overall durability, the Sebenza is in an entirely different league from a Delica.

I am not trying to convince you to buy high-end knives. I'm simply pointing out the quality differences between the two. Even Sal Glesser himself has stated that if Spyderco were to try building knives to the same standards as CRK, they would have to charge CRK prices for them.

My personal take is that I'm almost always willing to support the independent craftspeople out there pushing the state of the art and earning a living doing something cool.

I prefer to stick to $100 or less in an EDC knife. I couldn't forgive myself if I lost a really expensive knife. Replacement costs are easy to absorb with less expensive knives.

Well I have 3 CRK's and one Strider Smf that I bought from the exchange. I'll just have to experience a Hinderer soon. A Shirogorov would be awesome but its out of my price range I'm willing to spend at the moment.

I don't own any expensive knives but I do own expensive bikes and frames. When you go custom (in bike frames) you're buying one mans view of perfection and his skill. If you agree with his view of perfection then nothing else will substitute. Those bikes will not be an order of magnitude better than a production bike but you are simply called to them.

Exactly my sentiments as a fellow biker and appreciating also from building up some of these high end bike frames for others. And that just translated into knives for me too. Often all that remains is which ones my miserable inadequate bank account can afford :)

What BluesBender once said, 500$ knife in a 15$ jeans :D
I'm kinda the same... so it levels out :)

Disposable income.. Everyone spends theirs differently and there is no right answer or reasoning that needs to be justified.

After the bills, there's that leftover amount that people spend on their fancies. It dosent have to make sense..

I love knives like I'm sure everyone on this forum does. Why would I wanna buy a sebenza etc..., or a strider? So in general what makes those knives be worth that when I can by several high quality knives for the price of one of those ? I like the designs and the steels they use for those knives and I like the fit and finish. When I can also get that in a cheaper knife that won't cost my marriage. Please give me your take on this matter maybe I can be won over .

People have different incomes
