Why buy a 600$$ knife ?

Why should we convince you, you buy what you want and I buy what appeals to me. Generally if a knife appeals to me and I have the cash I buy it. If you posted the same type of question in a car, gun, watch or whatever forum most likely the response would be the same. If I you can't tell the difference in a better quality knife or don't care, that is fine each to his own, I certainly don't care to win you over.

I don't think there are too many compelling reasons that a person will "need" a $600 knife. If all you need to do is cut something then you can do that pretty effectively with a $20 knife. A $600 knife is something that you cant really be "convinced" on in my opinion. You either want one or you don't. You can either afford one or you cant. I really don't think need plays any part of it. Some people can appreciate the finer things in life and some cant. I personally cant see myself paying that much, but I have bought $400 knives. I wont do it again because I don't appreciate the difference between a $100 and one worth substantially more. To me, its simply not worth the investment. Similarly I don't appreciate the taste of a $100 steak over a $30 one and so I buy and enjoy cheaper steak. I only buy knives I will use and I have noticed that the more expensive a knife is the less likely I will use it. To each his own though.

I love knives like I'm sure everyone on this forum does. Why would I wanna buy a sebenza etc..., or a strider? So in general what makes those knives be worth that when I can by several high quality knives for the price of one of those ? I like the designs and the steels they use for those knives and I like the fit and finish. When I can also get that in a cheaper knife that won't cost my marriage. Please give me your take on this matter maybe I can be won over .

Because you can. If you can't, that's when you start to rationalize why you should or shouldn't. If your arguing with yourself and your wife right now about a certain amount of money you want to spend, then you probably shouldn't. Listen to your own instincts after your personal cost/benefit analysis has been completed. In the end, it's all about your personal cost vs your personal benefits. Which one wins out for you.

The real question is "Why not?". (Assuming that buying a $600 knife is a financially sound decision in your particular case.)

Owning well designed/crafted items is a pleasure all by itself.

This one is easy:

1. Pride of Ownership - do you want to pull the same $50 "piece of boring" out of your pocket that everyone else does?
2. User Experience - it's like the difference between a Honda Civic (great car) and an Acura TL (better car). Drive both and tell me it's not worth the extra $.

I really like the way you put that. "4 quarters than 100 pennies", I'm relatively new to collecting, like 3 or 4 months, and my collection is relatively small because of this mindset/being new. But I absolutely love every knife I have.

Why drive a Ferrari when a kia will suffice, why wear a rolex when a timex will suffice, why shoot a kreigoff when a mossburg will suffice. I might not be able to afford ferrari, a rolex, or a kreigoff but you know what I can afford, a 600 dollar knife:)

Also I think knives are almost as good as gold. You can use a knife for a year and sell it for minimal loss, like a small usage fee. With rare feature or limited editions you can even make profit.

Very good post. ^

As pretty much everyone correctly said here, to each their own.

I bought 2 cheap knives (gerber ripstop and schrade sch311) before taking the plunge and getting the only knife that felt like love at first sight, so much so that I didn't feel the internet reach out and snatch $500 out of my pocket (original price was $750, whew).. Everyone here's had that feeling, and as we all know, love disregards your wallet like nothing else.

Though to be fair, one of the only things preventing me from getting most top tier knives is the fact that the cool looking ones use a liner/frame lock. Not a fan of the asymmetrical low tech design, but it works damn well. If some of the knives didn't have frame/liner locks, I would be far deeper in the hole

that won't cost my marriage. Please give me your take on this matter

Well
. . . just look at it this way : That multi thousand dollar diamond ring, that is no doubt on said critic's finger :
  • has no moving parts
  • serves no useful function
  • besides dazzling the eye
  • and perhaps damaging the surface of less hard objects . . . that is . . . every thing it comes in contact with.

i mean . . .
I mean . . .
I MEEEEEEAN !

Just who is being unrealistic and wasting money here ? ? ? ?
The good Knight and restorer of order and repair in the relm who's only request is a blade worthy of his pure and whole hearted fealty (it is whole hearted isn't it ? ? ? . . . well . . . no matter . . . no . . . of course it is . . . ) . . .

or shall we cast our gaze toward the person who is under the spell of this rather dubious, nay, evil influence of the said stone that glitters and blinds the minds of all that fall within it's influence ? ? ?

on second thought . . .
I'mmmmmmmmmm not so sure I would present it exactly in those terms to the keeper of the rock but you get the jist . . . and I'm sure there is SOMETHING there you can use to gain favor . . .

. . . on further rumination . . . have you ever considered getting a PO Box and having the expensive little sharp thing sent there ?

For what it is worth SWMBO has not seen what is in my pocket at this moment and nor would I want her to, oh drear me no . . . and nor shall she if I can keep my wits about me . . . not at least for some time to come . . . I hope.

Having spent $3k plus on an engagement ring (insane, I know) I can most certainly say that it is far better value to buy five $600.00 knives instead...

YMMV.

:rolleyes:;):foot::D:thumbup:

I spent more than I she told me to spend (on the ring), so I'm in the same club with you... but I find it hilarious, my brother in law spend nearly $20k on a ring for my sister, but cringed and handed my knife back to me when he asked how much it cost. It's perfectly acceptable to have a multiple thousand dollar rock, but it's unfathomable for the average joe to have a $1,000 knife.

If buying a Sebenza or Strider costs you your marriage you are married to the wrong person so buy that knife and be done with her!

Yeah, that's nuttier than squirrel poop. Unless you carry a jeweler's loupe around in your pocket most people would never be able to tell that 20K ring from decent piece of costume jewelry.

I'm still waiting for the $3,000 knife she's gonna buy me btw... What a scam us guys get suckered into. :foot::grumpy:

There is no way I would ever even think about spending that kind of money on any woman for a ring.....

Especially these days with the insane divorce rates.

Maybe after 20 years of marriage get them something nice after the test of time.

There's no way I would ever get married again. Same reason.
