Why CONUS only? For selling items.

As long as you're using PayPal, they will cover you -- but only if you ship to a confirmed address. Someone telling you it's OK because it's a shipper is kidding you. If the item never gets to them, you could be on the hook. Make sure they add that shipper's address to their PayPal records.

I've shipped and received many items between Canada and USA. Other than they get held up in customs for a day or two, there has never been any issue. I consider Canadians and Americans as brothers and treat all the same.

Wow! Just had my first bad experience with shipping. I wanted to purchase a knife and sent payment. The seller decided after the fact, even though I offered to cover additional shipping expenses to Canada, that he would just reject my offer and put the knife as available again. The ad did NOT state CONUS. Wow. I'm very disappointed. I've never been treated this rudely by my American brothers before. It's leaving a real bad aftertaste in my mouth.

I should mention, the knife I wanted to buy was an old timey. A friend convinced me to pick one up to try. Is this what I can expect from the segment of knife folks? I've never had any issues with tactical folders or fixed blades.

That sounds like someone I wouldn't deal with at all in the future. I had a couple folks here refuse to ship to my APO or insist I pay with gift if they did. Now I just ignore them.

The worst thing is, it was a really great knife and I really wanted it. A beautiful GEC #73. Damn! I'm still mad about it. I served in the military along side Americans in Germany in the 80's, but I guess I'm not good enough to sell a knife to. $#^@#$#!

Its too easy to get burnt selling online and to take out as many variables as you can (international customs checks) is smart. I wont sell outside the US because I don't need to, and everyone has the right to choose.

And that's ok. Just be up front about it. Don't say you'll do it if a person sends extra for shipping, then change your mind when they agree. This ad did not say CONUS.

It clearly states that on their website

Having it printed somewhere on their site is way short of being good enough: A real warning, about something that is so unusual and discriminatory, is a warning that appears over the button, just as you are about to press buy... Better yet, the system should be designed to make completing the purchase impossible, as it is done everywhere else, like Ebay...

Other large retailers in the US are also restrictive, particularly hardware stores for some reason, but at least they simply prevent you from completing the purchase during the shopping process, so you are not left with your CC funds tied up for a week for a dud sale. Taking your entire purchase money away for a week, and then telling you your transaction will not work, is unacceptable.

The problem here is there are two ways to interpret CONUS. I always understood this to mean Contiguous United States.

From Wiki:

The Contiguous United States does not include Alaska, the state of Hawaii (as they are Pacific Ocean islands), or any other territories under the control of the United States. Which means the lower 48 only. Some references erroneously mistake the Continental United States for the Contiguous United States

That I can understand. One of the knives I wanted was a really nice Randall, that one stung too. Have no fear though, another will pop up. And another, and another..... :o

Had the same thing happen. It's a real bummer. Funny thing is I also have a dropship location in WA state if I need it but the guy didn't even give me a chance to tell him. Lesson learned and maybe it was the best to avoid that deal.

Yup. I guess I'll just have to keep looking. Maybe slip joints aren't for me after all. From this experience, that community doesn't seem too friendly. I'll stick to my Hinderers, Striders, ZT's, and Bark Rivers for now.

I'll list some bark Rivers soon, with the mention that I WILL ship to our friends in the North. ;)

Just like anywhere you go, on the internet or in the world, you are responsible for knowing and following the rules. But rather than doing the leg work to find out what the rules are, you want a small time operation to install a set of fail safes to not allow you to screw yourself. And holding ebay as the bastion saint of "the way things should be done" is slightly ridiculous.

These sentiments are like the other thread where the guy wanted the shipping policy printed in every sponsored bladeforums ad. Shall they also use the knife for you?

I think most of the time people don't know what conus means or don't know that Alaska and Hawaii cost the same and do not present any additional risk. As far as International shipping goes sellers and traders are just trying to minimize the risk. Most can't afford to lose hundreds or thousands of dollars. To say shipping outside the USA offers no additional risks is just ignorance. And good luck collecting on an insurance claim. I applaud Chris and Andy's responses, with members like that I would feel comfortable shipping overseas.

Calm down. One bad experience doesn't define an entire community. The Traditional knives forum is one of the best represented by our non-US friends.

They will accept your card, after a few PayPal purchases or money orders so they don't want to block all international orders, they simply screen them I'm guessing. But it does clearly state it on their site, on the first page in the description of the site and on the bottom of every page you go to after. International Shipping Policy, do you not check those before you buy from other sites or just hope the website will hold your hand. however I do agree your money should have been returned sooner.

Oh, I've calmed down. I was just mad yesterday. I received a most wonderful email from a member of the traditional knives community. They weren't able to help me find a similar knife, but it has restored my belief that the traditional community is fair and friendly. (Not all, though...)
