Why do people delete the price when they sell a knife? If the price remains, instead of being replaced with "SOLD" then this would remain a valuable resource for the users of the site. Why not just leave the price and indicate that the knife was sold...?

Is it required?

I think that having SOLD where the price used to be just makes it easier for people looking at the thread to see that the item is no longer available.

That being said when listing knives its nice to know what they’ve gone for in the past. I’ve made the mistake before of listing a knife for way more then similar ones have gone for in the past simply because every example I could find in the exchange had a big SOLD where the selling price used to be. It would have saved some time if I had known that $30 less then what I was asking had been the most that the knife had went for.

OK say I sell you a XM-18 for $500, you have it for a year and BAM.. Now they are worth/going for $575-$600.

When you want to sell it for fair market price $575-$600, would you want people knowing what you bought it for?

I'm guessing some would not mind at all, while some would. So I delate ALL my prices in my sale thread. Or let's say, I have a "fire sale" (just to move something in a few hours) would you want people knowing you got it cheap. Would that create a chain reaction? Say I sold a Mini Manix for $80 and never deleted the price.

Say two months later someone researches the going rate of the past... Now they are disco'ed and fair market price is $150. Does that make the seller look bad asking $150 for it? ... When just two months ago they were going for $80.

I'm not sure, but deleting the price assures that there will not be any problems. However, I can see how it would be helpfull.

I remove the price so there is no doubt that it is sold.

Then I lock the thread so it goes away.

Personally, I think the market would be more healthy if it were required that sale prices not be deleted. It works well for eBay. As in any other market, both buyer and seller ultimately benefit and sales volume increases when credible historical price data is readily available.

Besides, if it's okay to delete sale prices why not allow sellers to completely distort the market by editing in a higher sale price. The more confusion the better, right? I think a forum market should be run for the benefit of the membership at large rather than primarily for a small group of high volume scalpers. Just sayin.

I appreciate it when people leave the prices up after a sale. It is really helpful when determining a fair sale price for my own threads.

For some reason I always feel like someone is trying to be sneaky when they go back and delete a price.

Well said CS.

I had 7 or 8 of a particular Makers knives on this forum, needed money fast. Dumped them onto the market at fire sale prices. Some at 1/2 of what I paid and even less than that of his current pricing. Would it be fair to him to leave those prices up? Just because I dumped them because of my need. I do not think so. I delete prices, because it is no ones business but mine and the buyer.

I do not think it would be fair to the maker :)

I have a sold a few knives for higher than I got them for, but to make a profit over all? No way, I have lost way more money than I have made... Way more. :o

I would almost be willing to bet that that goes for all the other sellers also.

+1 here...

Some folks will "Quote" the sale price to save it for others...

If they do, without buying, they are chatting. In any case, disrespecting the OP is a result if that is not his intent.
Just my .02

If you contacted a buyer in private (rather than on a public forum) then it is only your business and the buyer's.
