"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

I stare at them for a while then proceed to march around holding onto my crotch with my knife in the air singing "This is my knife and this is my gun *tug on crotch*, this is for cutting and this is for fun *tug on crotch". That usually gets ride of them.

Damn you haha! When I saw this thread I was all set to reply with that, you beat me to it.

I don't really think of a knife much in the context of a weapon, sure it can be, but it can do a lot of non-destructive things too. Now a gun on the other hand, that's a weapon. I carry both daily, they each have their place for me.

OTOH, I'm pretty sure that some of the open carry advocacy crowd around here (that we tend to see on the news for all the wrong reasons) are compensating for other shortcomings...

I always find it odd that the people who complain about knives are the only ones seeing them as weapons. The majority of anyone who caries a knife, from knife nuts to guys who just needed a cheap 2 dollar pocket knife, tend to look at them as tools. Never give a second thought to it as a weapon unless it needs to be used that way (i.e. self defense)

Yet the people who complain only see a weapon and not a tool. Makes me wonder if they're over compensating from fear of their own dark desires.

"A good friend of mine packs a ruger gp100 357 magnum when he mows his lawn"

LOL, we have a douchebag like that who lives in our upper middle class neighborhood.

Everybody calls him "BARNEY FIFE" ROTFL!!

"Think of it as a much better box cutter."

Sometimes adding, "...if you think of tools as weapons, please don't get one."

He's a "douchebag" because he carries on his property?

I take that to mean you are okay with being labeled a "douchebag" if/when you carry a knife with a blade longer than 2 7/8 inches. And okay with everyone calling you "JOHN RAMBO".

I wonder if carrying on your own property is now grounds for being a douchebag. I wonder what that makes me since I carry outside my property.

I just tell people I carry a knife because I can't carry a gun at work and what am I supposed to cut my orange up with at lunch?

I OC because I loathing asking the government permission to exercise my rights. OC here requires no such permit. To OC here one must simply choose to do so and not be prohibited from possessing firearms. Still, I do still teach classes for those wanting to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit, but I also push for my state to become a constitutional carry state like AK, AR AZ, VT, and WY.

Unlike OC, it is attitudes like yours above that are truly self-expressive.

Those who carry typically do so ALL THE TIME. It doesn't matter where they are. Asking the bad guy to give you a few minutes to go get your weapon rarely works.

If someone has to explain this to you then you're never going to get it.

Oh yes. A gunstore owner/proficient shooter friend of mine learned this the hard way. His daughter came home one evening at around 9pm and he opened the gate for her. Two guys tried to rob her, and when my friend tried to help, was shot right outside his gate.

I don't fully trust any man who doesn't keep a knife of some sort on his person whenever possible. To me it says a lot about a person, are you a get it done kind of guy or a call a guy kind of guy? Most of the time guys like that don't know how to use basic tools like a saw, hammer, and screw drivers. I didn't realize such people existed until watching a friend of mine in highschool struggle with a hand saw, he had no clue how to use the tool and blamed the tool for not working properly. I don't trust folks like that, would you?

As for OC, according to the CDC the majority of violent gun crimes are committed with handguns because of their ability to conceal. If you are OCing I assume you are an upstanding gun owner. There are so many more CC folks out there yet folks don't seem to stress about them. It really doesn't make sense when you think about it. Ignorance is bliss and all I guess.

The guys I know who carry also carry religiously. It's like a fire extinguisher: you won't always need it, but when you do you're glad you have it. Goes for both pistols and knives. As long as the person isn't being a belligerent douche about it then why look down on it?

This...I am curious...
He attempted to psychologically peg others he doesn't even know by the fact they open carry. Such attitudes of those making such ignorant statements say much more themselves than their statements say about the strangers they are trying to peg.

OCing says nothing about oneself; however, making such blanket statements about OCers does.
