"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

"A good friend of mine packs a ruger gp100 357 magnum when he mows his lawn"

LOL, we have a douchebag like that who lives in our upper middle class neighborhood.

Everybody calls him "BARNEY FIFE" ROTFL!!
Interesting comment. Now I will share with you a true story to perhaps give you a look at some reasoning behind it.

I was helping a older woman gain her CPL or CCW (same thing but around here well have changed the name to CPL for political correctness) about 3 years ago. One day at work (before she started the process) I was explaining to her how I tend to carry my firearm on me even while I am at home. She responded with a puzzling look at said that the idea of caring a side arm to do things like cut the grass or mow the lawn is a bit ridiculous. I explained my position and said simply that I feel like bad things can happen at any time, especially when you feel most comfortable. For that reason I tend to just have it on my all the time. It doesn't effect anyone and I feel more protected and god for bid something was to happen to my family or even in my neighborhood I would be better prepared to respond. She said it was silly and disregarded my proclamation. All was fine and I felt that it was her choice to carry and do what she wants without contest even though she didn't show me the same respect so I left the conversation where it was. Not 4 days latter I went out to get the mail and the paper. I had forgotten all about the conversation and was just going about my day. I received to paper and looked at the headlines in the local section before returning to the house for my coffee. The headline read (can't remember verbatim but similar to)"man robed at gunpoint and murdered". I returned to the house and sat down to read the story. Turns out only 1 mile from the previous stated conversation with the woman a man was taking out his trash at around 5PM and was robed at gunpoint for his wallet right outside his house. After gaining his money the intruder turned and started to run. In mid stride he decided that having the money was not good enough so he stooped, turned around and shot the elderly man in the head with his illegally bought pistol. The next week I was talking to the same woman and she said she had seen the story and decided I wan not so ridiculous after all for my actions.

Take from the story what you want. I only ask that perhaps you think before you respond. Just remember that we can not see into other peoples lives and we don't know why people do what they do unless we converse with them with an open mind. Simply labeling people for behaviors that we find to be abnormal is easy I suppose. And after all, that is your right to do so. I would make the suggestion that you be cautious of people around you though who would outcast a man for wanting to protect himself. That person you call a "douchebag" may be the person to save your life one day.

I carry a knife because one day the cardboard box army or wild plastic clamshell packs will invade us mark my words it will happen!

I may not use those exact words and put it more professionally, but you get the basic idea. This was just more entertaining.

"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

To kill without getting blood under my fingernails.

Seriously, guys, these people are everywhere. A densely populated society will always have a very visible number of dangerously anti-social members, and they will scare others to the point of falling into the trap of trading freedom for security.

Of course that never quite works the way they hope.

We can help them. Without sarcasm, without compromising our own rights, we can explain and maybe eventually convince them that knives serve both utility and defense, and that both are the mark of a self-reliant and valuable member of society.

And if they don't believe it, at least we know we can defend ourselves from them! :D

That's the answer. Similar threads come up a lot since it is frustrating. You gotta be logical here and say that...

1. Some knife guys are too "over the top"
2. Some people just need to see our side and they'll get it.
and (listen)
3. Some people are just jerks who will have similar busybody reactions to other subjects too. Don't give them too much energy.

Well stated. Also a BIG  for applying one of my favorite quotes from Ben Franklin.
"Those willing to give up liberty for security deserve neither and will lose both"

" I just found out that I have a anti-knife friend..... Should I trust him?"
No!!!

I do not trust anyone who believes it is their right to control what I do privately.

I have carried and used a very sharp 4"+ blade in kitchens and other public places for 70 years. I have not cut myself or anyone else in over 65 years.

I am 77 years old. I resent being forced to buy insurance that will cover my having an abortion. Leave me ALONE!!!

I carry a knife for cutting or a pistol for shooting or a rifle for elk or a shotgun for geese or a brick for the mason's lodge or a bat for softball or a prybar for the barn or a pepsi bottle because I was thirsty. Those around me determine if they are weapons or not.

I have multiple thoughts on the subject and they are difficult to articulate to a person who does not have common frames of reference and experience.

I do not, and never have, "carried weapons" as an individual. I do, every day, carry tools or PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), that aid or facilitate me coming home alive and safe.

A construction worker does the same. They wear helmets, steel toed boots, and wear reflective vests. They use hammers, axes, and many other spectacularly deadly tools for their work.

So... Hammer or knife? Weapon, not weapon?

Pretty sure I've seen the FBI stats that show the most frequent weapon used in homicides are hands and feet. Ask them how they feel about carrying around 4 weapons daily. Then enjoy the show.

I hate that question. Really I do. I simply state that I choose to carry one of the oldest and most useful tools man has ever created. And I remind them that my knife is no more a weapon than the chain on their wallet, the belt around their waist or the ring of keys in their pocket. It is our intent that determines if an object is a weapon or not. My intent clearly eludes to the fact that I am carrying a tool. And it would never become a weapon unless keeping my life was dependent on it being such.

"In Japan the hands can be used like a knife!"
However, since I don't live in Japan, I carry this handy tool.

I don't think I've ever had someone call a pocket knife a weapon, course I grew up on a ranch and have worked on them most of my life. Or at the very least been in semi rural towns most of my life.

One time I was aked why I was carrying "That big weapon."
I asked "What weapon?"...I was completely confused, as I was opening a box with a 2.5 inch bladed custom karambit with pretty blue anodized titanium scales.

I found out after a bit of conversation what the issue was; her father and grandfather never carried even a small slip-joint. :(
She relaxed after finding out the $330 price tag though...it transformed me from Evil Possible Murderer into Harmless Knife Nerd.

Just one more advantage of expensive knives; even the knife illiterate know you don't spend that much cash to go stab someone. :)

I carry a pocket knife, more or less for utility purposes. I'd carry a baseball bat if I wouldn't get hassled. But in NY everything is considered a weapon, so you're pretty limited. If you want to conceal carry then they put you on their gestapo list. There's a lot of back and forth on the issue here. I'm pro Constitution so I believe in being free and not restricting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Either way nothing is dangerous, until a thug or maniac perpetrates a crime with it.
I don't think we should be punished for other idiots mistakes. A rock thrown hard enough can kill someone, should we ban rocks?
