"Why do you carry a weapon?!"

"Because even though it's that time of the month, my teeth and fingernails still aren't sharp enough to get through this box."

"Oh, don't worry, the knife isn't nearly as sharp as my tongue."

Never been asked that, I usually carry something that appears to be un-aggressive like an opinel or a sak. Kershaws and spydercos are only for fondling

I think anyone who thinks it's unacceptable to carry a knife should be locked in a room with nothing but one of those clam shell packages and told they aren't allowed to leave or urinate until they open it...that will teach them!

I carry a knife because it's so much easier than carrying a pair of scissors around!

Before EDCing a knife, I never realized how much I could actually benefit from one. Been carrying one for years now and I honestly don't know how I survived without one. I use my knife way more than I ever thought I would. From opening mail to cutting open packages and even prepping food once in a while (apples mostly when on the go). Pizza boxes drive me crazy because they take up so much room so I cut them up before putting them in the recycling bin. It also serves as a self defence tool if the need ever arose, god forbid that ever happens.
Also as a firefighter, it's one of the most important tools I carry.
As can be seen, I consider my knife a TOOL. In my opinion, a knife is one of the most versatile tools a man (or woman) can own.

+1 - as a volunteer firefighter for 20+ years (read unpaid in rural Texas), my knives came in handy nearly every day. The only tools more useful than my knives were my fire hose and fire pump for moving water through said hose. Beating a fire out with wet burlap bags draws heavy vacuum.

Where I live it rarely comes up. Besides, my knife is a tool. Now the .45 they can't see... THAT's a weapon.

I carry a knife every day as it is an excellent tool. I carry a weapon because evil exists.

Because coconuts don't open them selves when I'm in a tropical location on vacation.

I say "What weapon?" "oh this little thing? *pulls out Spyderco military* This is for my apple at lunch every day and loose threads on my clothes, it also makes a good letter opener. It's no a weapon. Now a sword, that's a weapon. *pulls out a cold steel katana* "

Haha I usually tell people it's a TOOL not a weapon. A weapon is used for harming other living beings. This is for utility and convenience just like any other wrench or a hammer. I happen to need it where I go so I carry it. Lots of people do it. You should try it, you'd be surprised how often you'll use it. Just not on people man, that's not cool.

I had a lady friend ask me why I had 5 knives on me when I stayed with her for the weekend and I told her that and she said "huh, doesn't sound like a bad idea, but why 5!?"
That last question I couldn't answer, i told her she wouldn't understand until she gets into the hobby of collecting them. It's just what some of use do.

I rarely carry 5 at once, but when I do, here's my reasons:
One for slicing food, one for cutting food, one fixed-blade, one for heavy use(non-food), and one to beat and do things you shouldn't do with knives with.
I'm a little weird about my food ones. I always keep em clean, and even lube w/food-safe stuff.

I got this kind of question a lot while in college, although it usually went something like "aren't you not supposed to have knives on campus?" My response was usually "you're not supposed to have alcohol either, but that doesn't stop you."

I would reply, "I have never owned a weapon, but have many tools."

It drives me crazy when people refer to common, everyday objects as "weapons".

Anything is a weapon if used with bad intent.

I don't want to derail this so I'll keep it short...if it were legal, I would probably OC (or semi conceal) for the reasons you mentioned, basically the convenience factor. Not an option though because OC of pistols is illegal in Texas, CHL or not. Through a weird legal loophole, OC of long guns is legal. There is a group that keeps popping up in major cities (DFW, Houston, etc) who seem to think that marching around with loaded long guns on their backs is a good idea. They don't seem to understand the concept that just because something is legal doesn't mean that it's a good idea. I want OC (of pistols) to be legal, but it has died 3 times in the legislature, including last year, and the 'in your face' crowd aren't doing any favors sadly.

You are lucky to have pro 2A LEOs, even in Texas many are far from that, especially in some of the cities. I tired to get a local LEO signoff on a suppressor about 2 years ago and was practically laughed at by my city dept and county sheriff (I went the trust route), in spite of having no criminal record, having a valid CHL, and being a generally upstanding citizen (including being a member of the state bar).

Just last weekend, I was grocery shopping and had a Blur clipped on my shorts pocket (black clip/tan shorts so it was pretty obvious) and noticed a sheep-person (sherson?? haha) glaring at me in line... Part of me wished he knew I had an LC9 IWB concealed under my untucked shirt.

I thought I was sorta up on Texas gun laws, but I guess not. You can't OC there legally? That kind of surprises me (as you say, you'd also think most LEOs there would be pro 2A). You can get a CCW permit though right? I;ve never understood why they'd rather you carry a concealed weapon but not an open one. At least with an open carry, a cop or whoever will never be surprised if you move for it, if it's concealed they don't know and that adds another element... Sheesh.

And the looks for the Blur... It was inside your pocket as usual? That's awful. Sometimes I wear a belt pouch knife (Buck 110, etc.) but most people out and about barely give it a glance (possibly assuming it is a multitool, I'm not sure).

I always thought Texas was sort of "be who you are" when it comes to guns type thing.

Side note I watched 3 episodes of Border Wars today.

" I just found out that I have a anti-knife friend..... Should I trust him?"
No!!!

I do not trust anyone who believes it is their right to control what I do privately.

I have carried and used a very sharp 4"+ blade in kitchens and other public places for 70 years. I have not cut myself or anyone else in over 65 years.

I am 77 years old. I resent being forced to buy insurance that will cover my having an abortion. Leave me ALONE!!!

Mike

I gotta ask: same knife for over 60 years, or did you add a few to the collection to EDC over time?

I OC a S&W all the time and never get asked that question. The answer is self evident.

I am glad that it's not just in the UK that silly questions get asked of the prepared individual  . My usual answer is " to do this " and then carry on with the task in hand.
