I've been in situations where I needed to cut something but was hesitant to use my good folder. I decided I should carry a beater as a second folder. Also if there is a situation where I need to loan a knife to someone else I could give them the beater. Well it was trouble for me to carry 2 knives because I carry other stuff, and I found over the years that I almost never needed the second knife, so I went back to carrying just one. And I decided that I should not worry so much about what I cut with my knife, and carry a knife that was not fragile.

Excluding the times I’m at home laying around or at the beach, that’s when I’ll only have a little folder in my pocket, I will always have a SAK, small fixed blade, and a folder on me.

Mainly, I do this because I simply want to and I enjoy it. I always wear cargo shorts/pants and have plenty of pockets.

I like having a fixed blade because there is a lot less to break or go wrong with it and I just prefer them overall. But, folders are less of an aggravation to use for most daily tasks and more socially acceptable to use in public, so they get used more. The SAK is for the tools and a backup blade.

Overkill? For me, yes, but I don’t care about that.

I generally carry a large folder either a Buck 110 or a large Vantage for heavier work and a small 303 for lighter, smaller work and it has 3 different blades for a variety of tasks and it’s a good sticker picker.
On camping, hunting and fishing trips I change up with what ever fixed blade fits the tasks and a mid size folder like a 301 stockman.

At work I usually have my primary folder and a Leatherman skeletool. The skeletool has a serrated knife on it, but that's probably the least used tool on there. It's also what I hand to people when they ask for a knife. Half the time they end up using the pliers or screwdriver, since that's what they were looking for in the first place.

A small SAK lives on my keys too, so I guess that's three.

Usually 3 .

One on my keychain= mini Recon 1 . So if I forget everything else ,but can still drive away , I will at least have this one little knife .

Some old beater in left front or cargo pocket for utility , commonly an XL SE Vaquero .

Backup (and new trial carry ) on the right . Was recently an XL Manix ball bearing lock , but now trying a Signature Spartan SE .

Sometimes a fixed blade or large SAK , as needed for specific tasks ; or smaller folders for town carry .

Sometimes I do. I do if I'm wearing my fanny. Sometimes I carry a bigger knife, which I generally prefer and a smaller knife which I can use without issue around others. I'm more into kitchen knives so anything under 4" is a toothpick. 3.5" to 4" is what I'd consider paring, I prefer 4" for paring. 4.5" is what I'd consider a small utility, which is close to what I prefer to carry. Over 5" is a normal utility size, to around 6" or just over it, which is too big to carry. The biggest I could get away carrying is like the 5.5" Kershaw strata. It's too big, which is likely why kershaw doesn't make it anymore. The 4.5" is much better. However those larger knives like that 5.5" are very good for fixed blade alternatives to keep in a bag. That's one scenario where I'll carry two, one on me, one in a bag, the bag will have a fixed blade or a larger folder which serves as a fixed blade alt. Generally though I like something like the ZT 0452 which I have reground to a much better performing blade. Anything larger than that and I'd want a smaller knife, something 3" like a Leek or 3.5" like most knives, for instance my boker kwaiken, as a thing I could cut my muffin in half at starbucks with or whatever. The reground zt is a nice one size fits all solution for me. s35vn has no issue holding up to anything I might subject that thing to even after I regrind it to something more like a kitchen knife geometry.

Usually carry one, but sometimes add a second folder just for fun. The other time I will carry two is if I add a fixed blade. A folder is always in my pocket, fixed blade may be belt carry or in a bag/backpack.
